Figma – Thor (Avengers Movie)

figma Marvel The Avengers ThorPablolobo and Canonball teamed up to take a look at Figma’s new Avengers Thor, with Pablolobo handling text and pics while Canonball shared his thoughts via video. Let’s see what these two thought about Figma’s take on Marvel’s God of Thunder!

Pablolobo:

Figma’s new line of Marvel superhero action figures are starting to hit, with the first in the line being Thor, God of Thunder. These Marvel figures represent our favorite Avengers as they appeared in the Avengers movie, and they are sure to garner some discussion. Let me start by saying that Thor is about 6.25 inches tall, which puts him at the same height as Hasbro’s Marvel Legends Black Panther. Before we all get on the “Thor is a giant at 6′ 6″ in the comics and looks huge in the movies,” Chris Hemsworth, the actor, is only 6′ 2″ and some. In real life, that’s a giant to a few people. I know I’m pushing the 6′ 4″ frame and I’m huge to some people — put that into perspective. That means a lot of the actors he is surrounded by aren’t over 6 feet tall. Chris Evans (Captain America) is only 6 feet tall exactly in real life.

And, yes, this is going to be an issue for many people, which is why I’m making a huge point of it up front. I think there will be a great number of people hoping that these figures would fit in with their Marvel Legends or even replace their Movie Legends. That’s not going to happen. First, Marvel Legends is actually taller than “real stats.” Marvel Legends Black Panther, a 6-foot-tall-ish character, is, by true conversions, 6.25 inches, putting way above the 6-foot average. Figma’s Iron Man will be taller than Thor according to the listing on GoodSmile (info), and Captain America will round out a true 6 inches (info). We as collectors forget what 6 inches is and isn’t; we are sold a DC Universe Classics line at 6 inches, but, really, they aren’t. Neither are Marvel Legends.

Figma’s Thor is a true 6-inch-scaled action figure in that it is accurate to the actor’s height. It’s odd saying that, but when compared to Indiana Jones, it’s spot on.

That discussion over and done with, let’s move on to the sculpt. The body — the sculpt of this figure is amazing. It captures Thor perfectly and has every detail that you would expect and want from the figure. The scale mail is beatiful to look at and I’m loving every aspect of it. The attention to detail is just perfect. And the hammer! Oh lordy! The hammer is so crisp, clean, and beautiful. However, the head sculpt bothers me. It’s a great sculpt and I love the hair, but the head is small. It feels really undersized and this is where the scale issue really hits. If Thor’s head is out of scale, then it’s due to the overall scaling being off and the whole figure needs to be larger, OR the head needs to be sized up. I’ll need some calipers and Chris Hemsworth’s head to confirm this. Please send him to my address for confirmation.

There are some great articulation bits on this figure. The hair is articulated at the back. Yeah, you got it. When you tilt his head back you can move the hair back to allow better head posing! His eyes are also articulated, like Cobra before him, this is a neat little thing for those wanting to have Thor looking cross eyed. I’m not certain it was critical for Thor, but I’ll roll with it. The rest of the articulation is standard Figma with the exception of the hinged ab. This is there to allow for even more crunch poses. I’m not certain it’s really necessary; most Figma’s already have an incredible range of motion.

I’ll take a minute to discuss the cape. Yeah, it’s a cloth cape that snaps in under the shoulder armor. It’s cool, easy to install and gives tons of oppurtunities to pose. You don’t have the soft or semi-hard plastic hampering the poses. Plus, you can drape it and stuff.

Figma figures always come with a ton of accessories, like a stand, hands, etc. There aren’t a ton of extra hands here, but there are enough for this figure to have some different looks.

There were a number of people that were excited by this figure and the upcoming release of Captain America, Thor, Hulk, etc; they were hoping this would be a Hot Toys for 6-inch action figures. I’ll throw my hat in and say it is. But this isn’t a line that is a complement for your Marvel Legends collection; it’s a collection on its own, and, as such, will look amazing when finally assembled.
