Figma – Mikasa Ackerman

Attack on Titan is a manga started in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in 2009 by Hajime Isayama. In 2013 an anime was developed and released to the masses. The story is about the remains of humanity living in a country behind a very large protective wall, a wall that protects from human-eating giants called Titans. Eren Yeager, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Arlert are your main characters. The manga and anime are extremely popular and have a dedicated fan base, and that’s pretty much what I can tell you from reading the Fwoosh forums and googling.

I don’t know squat about the anime or the manga. Never read it. I bought Mikasa and Eren based on their being Figma action figures, and I have a huge and continued curiosity for their sculpting and engineering. I also bought them for the look of the figures. When she got to the house, my youngest blurted out, “That’s from Attack on Titan!” I had to ask how he knew and he said there is a Minecraft mod for it. My oldest confirmed, not that it was needed, but that’s what older brothers do, and then proceeded to watch the first four episodes and tell me that the show was really cool.

The plan was to sell her after reviewing her, and upon hearing this news, both boys made squinchy disapproval faces at me. She and her bud Eren will land in their rooms in the near future.

Mikasa stands around 6 inches tall and has all the beautiful sculpting that is expected from Figma at this point. I’ve been google-imaging her, and, as far as I can tell, Figma nailed the details of her body, uniform, and face. She’s an amazing figure to look at. In addition to the figure, there are the usual extra faces, accessories, hands, and weapons that you can expect in a Figma figure. Ten hands in all that can be attached at the wrist ball-joint peg. There are two of the box-cutter swords that fit with two of the hands, and she comes with the steampunk-looking belt. The belt on its own is huge and contains holes and pegs for all sorts of play. It looks like there are some clear hooks and ropes that attach to the belt and some smoke effects and some missiles that look like they are shooting out. I doubt I’ll get around to putting all this together, but I imagine the kids will be going to town on it.

The articulation on the figure is standard Figma; we’ve reviewed a couple here. There is an interesting change in the figure, though: the hidden thigh swivel is replaced with a mid-thigh swivel. It’s an interesting change and one that incorporates well with the figure’s design (i.e. there are thigh straps to hide the joint). Otherwise, it’s pretty standard. I know that not everyone loves the disk-shaped elbows and knees, but they really don’t bother me. Figma’s done a great job hiding the elbow disk, and the bulge behind the knees doesn’t bother me since I tend to pose my figures in the vanilla frontal view. Here’s the breakdown:

Rocker ankles
Hinged ankles
Swivel ankles
Hinged Knees
Swivel thighs
Ball hips
Ball waist
Double ball ab
Ball shoulders
Hinged Shoulders
Swivel bicep
Hinged elbows
Swivel wrist
Hinged wrist
Swivel neck
Hinged neck
Swivel head

I’ve played around with enough Figmas that I know the quality that I’m getting and that I enjoy pretty much every one of them. Even Indiana Jones. Initially I thought that I could work Mikasa into some kind of fantasy group, like with Guts, but the styling of the uniform is screaming “Gundam” or “mech pilot,” but as mentioned, my kids took over this purchase and she’ll find a home with them.

The figure is fantastic and I do recommend her for collectors of Attack on Titan or those of us that like cool-looking, well-engineered figures. You can preorder her at:
