It’s been a while since I’ve done a review of a Marvel Legends action figure and I feel like I’m dusting off cobwebs and rust from an old car. And Marvel Legends Infinite NOW Captain America is a bit like driving an old car; it has all the goodness of a classic Marvel Legends action figure.
NOW Captain America is good old Steve Rogers in a new Captain America outfit. I’m certain there was a reason given in the comic, or not, but we got a new outfit for Cap. And it resembles the movie outfit somewhat. Truth be told, it’s a hell of a lot better than the movie outfit and it’s a great design. I don’t know if anyone read the Invaders series from a few years ago, but US Agent had a similar outfit and it looked pretty cool. There are a number of people that don’t like Cap in body armor and “modern sportswear-like” dressings, but this is a good modern update to a classic costume.
The sculpt is also fantastic and one that I really like. The figure is Captain America in the stature and poise; it has a commanding presence as the center piece on my modern Marvel Legends display. The figure is incredibly sculpted and the armor details really pop. I love the head sculpt, especially the size. The head sculpts on the 2013-14 figures have been great, and this guy looks awesome next to Hawkeye and Black Panther. The scale of the figure is also just right; he’s a tad taller than Hawkeye and Black Panther as he should be.
The articulation is perfect. It’s all the right joints and they all function the way they should. The only fix would be along the ab-joint, the ratchet there is limiting and inhibits some posing. It’s less of a design and more of a production issue. The joint breakdown is:
Rocker ankles
Hinged ankles
Shin swivels
Double knees
Swivel thighs
Ball hips
Swivel Waist
Hinged abs
Ball shoulders
Swivel biceps
Double elbows
Swivel wrists
Hinged wrists
Hinged neck
Ball head
I’m not crazy about the shield, I still love the shoulder strap version of the Toy Biz Series 1 Captain America. This one’s peg in the back doohickey is probably easier to manufacture, but I’m just not a fan of it. I do like the internal look on the shield — great detailing.
There are some concerns about the paint on the abs. A number of people have stated that they are having paint chip problems. I know that I have not had any problems with this figure. I have a case in my Pile of Loot at BigBadToyStore, so we’ll see how those turn out. At least one of those figures will become a US Agent as this design is too good not to turn into John Walker. The shoulder sockets will need a little hollowing as there is some rub in there.
This figure is out now. In fact, I picked mine up over Christmas. I was able to get one of the guys to pick up the figure from the back room. Indy says I played too dumb, but I did my best to be the dumb dad about not knowing about collecting toys. Sadly, I could only get the guy to give up one Cap; he wouldn’t budge and would not fall for the “my kids really want these.” Well, no worries. You can go to any five-and-dime and pick these up. And you should, he’s awesome.
