Power-Con 2012 – Mattel Panel and Booth

Mattel dropped some cool reveals, plans, and showed off production versions of the last of the 2012 MOTUC lineup at Power-Con this weekend.  Take a look at some pics after the jump!

The reveal of the show for me was Octavia, June’s figure.  She’s one of those Filmation-only characters that I’ve been drooling for in anticipation, and she looks absolutely perfect.  I love obscure characters like this, and these are the types of characters we would miss out on if the line was “vintage only.”  I also love that she comes with swords for her squid arms from the ‘toon, and the squid-faced Horde Crossbow is a nice touch.  The tentacles were not attached to the figure at this stage of prototyping, but will attach to the figure at production.

Snake Face, April’s MOTUC figure, is a character I have never cared for, and the vintage figure has always looked really bad to me, but this sculpt has me turned around on the character, and I’m actually looking forward to him now.

Karatti is May’s figure and quite a surprise to me.  I figured on seeing a Hydron next from New Adventures, but a Space Mutant is fine with me since they are more visually interesting.  Karatti translated to MOTUC turned out really cool.  The mask is really strange and interesting looking.

The other big news was the “Castle Grayskull Experiment.”  They are basically going to offer Grayskull for preorder based on a B-Sheet they will show at NYCC.  The proposed price is pretty high, but seems about in line with the costs in this line.  Their choice for the style of Grayskull is the original prototype by Mark Taylor.  I’m fine with that decision.  The only thing that worries me is that they are looking for about the same number of orders they needed to hit the minimum for the 2013 subs.  People bought multiple subs, but I don’t see that happening for a Grayskull.  I mean, how many Castle Grayskulls do you need?  I would also guess that the type of folks who won’t commit to sight-unseen subscriptions won’t commit to a Castle Grayskull without more details.

I also liked getting another look at the SDCC reveals that were further along in the production process.  Netossa, Dekker, Ram Man, Jitsu, Procrustus, Granamyr, and Randor were all production samples and looked fantastic.  The scaled shoulders really help sell Castle Grayskullman’s stony look a lot better than the standard ones.  I also liked Randor’s vac metal goblet way more than it deserves.  I’m easily distracted by shiny objects, apparently.  I talked briefly with Toyguru who confirmed that the bicep swivels on Procrustus made it to final production.
