DCUC Review – El Dorado

El Dorado

I have to be honest, I have absolutely zero recollection of the character El Dorado from the Superfriends.  I watched the show often as a child and have some memory of Apache Chief, Black Vulcan and Samurai from this wave but El Dorado escapes me.  I don’t have any sort of philosophical objection to his inclusion in the line, I just don’t know him.  I’m pretty open to all characters as long as they make cool figures.

Accessories

El Dorado comes with the Collect and Connect piece of Apache chief and that’s it.  I did some youtube reseach on this character, watching episodes with him in Superfriends, and I’m at a loss as to what they could include with him if they had wanted to add an accessory so that’s not too troubling.

Sculpt

The figure looks like the medium build base body with a new head sculpt and belt/collar/cape combination piece.  The belt/collar/cape combo piece is cast in a thin plastic piece that is very flexible.  The headsculpt on my figure looks a little off from what I see on the prototype.  It looks a little overlarge and sits low on the figure’s neck giving him a bit of a no-neck look.

I think his eye placement on my figure is also a bit askew with the left eye floating a bit.  I’m not seeing that eyeball askew in the proto, so I hope I just got a weird production figure and they aren’t all like that.  It also bugs me a bit when shirtless figures don’t have nipples and since he has no accessories, it would have been cool if he had fists (as shown in the prototype) rather than the accessory hands.

The belt piece is a really slick sculpt with lots of detail and texture and I’m glad to see more use of the ultra thin flexible plastic.  Love that stuff.  Love. It..

Articulation

More standard DCUC articulation here and the belt piece does not inhibit movement except for a little bit of the backward arch of the ab joint.  It’s very minimal.  The head does seem more restricted than normal for this body with no side to side tilt.

Paint

The Paint on the belt is very nice shiny gold.  It doesn’t seem to be flaking off which could be a worry on more flexible plastics.  The skin is mostly cast in the flesh colored plastic, though the head seems painted and the paint on my figure’s face seems oddly thick.  I also don’t love the way the gloves look on this guy.  The goldish yellow just kind of fades away at his elbow and doesn’t pop very much.  I think a dedicated glove sculpt would have helped him look a bit cooler.

Overall, this figure is a bit disappointing.  I really love the super soft material used on the cape and the belt, but the head sculpt seems to have suffered somewhat in production.
