The first of October has arrived already and Matty is back to answer your questions. This time he has brought along his friends Bill Benecke (Lead Designer at Mattel) and the Four Horsemen!
1. The DCUC 12 C&C Darkseid looks great, especially with his Killing Glove. How tall will the final figure be and is his glove swappable with a regular hand?
He will be 9” inches and have a second hand.
2. Is the DCUC 12 Desaad figure’s harness removable? It is great for fans of Super Powers but there are comic fans that will want to display him without it.
Yes. It is removable.
3. How will the DCUC 12 Iron figure’s “tunic” be handled in production? Will it be a very pliable piece of plastic, like Mantis’ cape? It looks great for effect but appears that it will limit articulation if it is not handled properly. Also, will his wrench attachment really work?
It will be similar to Forager from Wave 10.
4. Will the DCUC 12 MAry Batson figure have the “ab-crunch” torso articulation? From the looks for the picutres it seems as though it is missing.
From Bill Benecke in design:
Although we wanted to maintain the ab crunch articulation on Mary Batson, it would have made it difficult to capture the “look” of her costume. We felt that the loose folds of her blouse were important to the character, and differentiate her from other characters (Supergirl, for example).
Ultimately, our goal is to produce the most faithful representation of the character that we can. Sometimes, as with Mary Batson, this means sacrificing articulation for authenticity, though we also have situations like Green Arrow, where we added extra wrist articulation to get him “right”.
5. A lot of people thought that when a Dr. Mid-Nite figure was introduced in DCUC it would have a 50/50 variant of classic Charles and modern Pieter. Since this is not the case are there plans to get the modern figure out at some point? He is essential to the current JSA line-up.
We went right to the Four Horsemen to get a response on this one:
In many cases we are able to get both variants into a wave. This was a case where the wave already had so much new tooling that we just couldn’t make both versions work. Too many compromises would have been required to get two figures out of the tooling that we were allowed. The classic version allowed us to use much more existing tooling than the modern look would have. Luckily, this is a case where both versions are such strong characters that they both justify being made at some point in the line. – Eric
6. Online retailers are sending out reports that they were shorted on their DCUC series 9 orders, is it true that Mattel is not able to fulfill orders? Will more series 9 be produced?
No, not at this time.
7. People are finding two versions of the Chemo C&C right now – one with bubbles just one the surface of his shell and one with a bubbly “insert” in his torso. Is this a planned variant or should they all have the insert?
It was a running change to insert the bubbles as soon as possible. They were a late add to the figure. There is a great image on Matty’s Facebook page.
