Day two of our Mattel free for all brings into DCUC territory. The Matty Collector Earth-3 two-pack sold out of its first allotment in record time on Monday, proving that DCUC has become an official juggernaut of a toy line. We have good news though, there are more on their way and we have our look at the two figures ready for you right now. Read on!
Since these guys are going to be showing up in the hands of collectors very soon, I am going to keep this pretty brief. All thoughts of this set being a slight gamble in terms of obscurity of character to sell through can be tossed out the window- and I couldn’t be happier about that. There are a lot of people that missed out on this set on Monday because many of us (me included) never would have thought it would have come a gone so fast. Luckily, those left out will get another crack at buying in a couple of weeks, and I would certainly recommend doing so.
In terms of quality, this set is extremely nice. No floppy joints, great paint and solid plastic. One thing of note is that both have a lot more paint detail in the face with a noticeable wash that brings out the sculpting details that the Horsemen have provided. This is a great touch that I hope we see in appropriate places in the future.
The figures themselves have some great new detail, I am really digging Luthor’s helmet and his “L” overlay is attached at the neck so it doesn’t inhibit his ab crunch articulation. Ultraman is fairly basic, I think you will either like the way his “U” logo is done, or dismiss it, it works for me. I do have to say that he has one of the best DCUC head sculpts so far, I love the expression and slicked back hair- he looks PISSED. Oh, and for those keeping score Luthor uses the Manta body and Ultraman uses the Captain Atom buck.
This set makes me very hopeful for obscure character selection for this line going forward- it looks as though the sky’s the limit. I really hope we hear further news of Crime Syndicate/Earth-3 figures soon, having them all together will make for a great spot in the display.
