Demanded Characters – Black Canary

Welcome back to the Ladies Edition of Demanded Characters.  This week we will take a look at the sexy siren currently residing in Star City.  Though she was thought to be off the market, recently it was discovered she is still single, so guys: get in line and bring your ear plugs to take a good look at Dinah Lance, the Black Canary.

Looking at our hottie from last week, most of the readers want to see a classic version of Starfire, though there was a strong pull for a modern outfit.  The bottom line is she is who she is, Mattel: don’t censor her or forget her altogether.

This week we travel to Star City, the home of the Emerald Archer and his side-kick Speedy.  Ollie is a womanizer who has had his share of famous women, but no one comes close to the Black Canary.  She is the current leader of the JLA and has taken the fight right to the Furies of Apokolips.

So who is this young and very seasoned member of the DCU?

Dinah Lance is the daughter of a cop and the original Black Canary.  She is one of the legacies in the DCU and has surpassed her parents as a crime fighter.  At age 19 she donned the wig and fishnets to follow in her mother’s footsteps.  She had one advantage in the game, she was cursed by a villain.  That curse turned out to be a blessing, giving her the ability to emit a sonic scream from her vocal cords.

She joined the other heroes in the DCU such as the Green Lantern and the Flash to form the original Justice League.  They rose up from the ashes after the forced retirement of the previous generation of heroes in the JSA.  It was in the JLA that she met and fell in love with the brash playboy who ran around like he was a modern day Robin Hood, Oliver Queen.

Dinah would eventually leave the JLA to become Robin Hood’s Maid Marion.  They opened a flower shop, Sherwood Florist, and became the fiery couple in the DCU; mixing a romantic relationship with crime fighting.  The two became a powerful force in a male dominated genre, and one thing was sure: Dinah could take care of herself.

During her time with Ollie, tragedy struck the couple. Dinah was kidnapped and beaten, the price: the loss of her sonic scream, and her ability to have children.  Though this event left her emotionally and physically bruised, she came back and showed nothing could keep this woman down.

After the apparent death of Ollie, Dinah really found herself.  She joined Barbara Gordon to make the Birds of Prey a real force in the DCU.  She trained her body to be a fighting machine, not having to rely on technology or her powers to protect herself.  Finally Dinah would become an adoptive mother to a young girl on the wrong path.

Most recently her Canary Cry was returned to her by a Lazarus pit, in an adventure with Ra’s al Gul.  She can currently be seen in her own book Black Canary and Green Arrow, as well as the JLA and cameos in Birds of Prey.

So the real question: Of the many costumes, which do you think is the real Classic?
