Hasbro: Marvel Legends Colossus – Why You Should Care

Hasbro Marvel Legends Warlock Series Colossus featured

Fwoosh loves the classic looks for comic book characters. There seems to be a consensus that none of us are up to date with the modern comic universes. I’m here to tell you that you are wrong. We are up to date and some of us even like the modern looks. I even like the new Colossus coming from Hasbro’s Marvel Legends Warlock Series.

Before I get started, Colossus is one of my favorite X-Men. He was big, tall, he stuck out like a sore thumb, and he was never quite certain of his role. As an overgrown, slightly-on-the-outside adolescent/teen/twenty/thirty/forty-something, I totally related. And I related to the mutant power of putting armor to protect one’s self. I started reading X-Men comics because of Wolverine in the Savage Land, but I kept reading because of Colossus. For me, Colossus should always be in his Giant-Sized Costume. And the ToyBiz Series 5 Colossus is perfect in every regard.

I know that there are some on staff that love the Astonishing X-Men update of the X-Men Classics Colossus, and without a doubt it is a great update to the classic look. Appearing in a great comic, in a great story arc, it certainly is a look that can translate into modern comics, and this look will always be “my” Colossus.

But, as my kids like to tell me often, I’m old. What was cool when I was a kid isn’t necessarily cool now and ignoring what is happening in comics, movies, or video games is wrong. Right now Colossus is a playable character in a game called Marvel’s Contest of Champions on your favorite mobile device. It’s a basic fighting game where you can collect tons of characters, build them up, do some PvP, quests and events. It’s a simple system, somewhat monotonous, but pretty fun. And Colossus, one of the game’s heavy hitters, is wearing the costume that will appear in Marvel Legends Warlock Series.

The costume also appears in Marvel Heroes available on the PC and Mac.

The costume first appeared in Uncanny X-Men 500 and was the predecessor to the Colossus Juggernaut costume that appeared in Uncanny X-Men 542. Now, I know, but that comic was published back in 2008 and 2012. Correct, it is “old” and outdated, but it is still one of the more recognizable modern costumes that Colossus has worn. It’s been published quite a bit and, yes, it looks terrible. But it could also be worse. (Anyone reading X-Men at the time of this writing?) Truth is, the costume was decent enough that it was able to translate into a movie style with Deadpool, and the figure could easily be adjusted to movie styling.

When I saw the pics from SDCC ’16 I was floored, I might be the minority, but I really wanted this version. And while the press pics aren’t great, I am looking forward to it.

I might be in the minority, there might be a million people that decide to hate me for this, but I do like this modern look, it’s not perfect, but it does pop and there are some further opportunities for this figure.
