1000TOYS: TOA Heavy Industries 1:12 Synthetic Human

It’s mid-February 2017 and I’ve already gotten a second figure that could easily compete for “action figure of the year.” 1000TOYS’ 1:12 Synthetic human is a scaled-down version of their 1:6 scale action figure, and it is just as amazing.

“Yeah yeah, Pabs, c’mon, seriously, 2017 just started and you already have two contenders for figure of the year?” Yes! The other day I reviewed S.H. Figuarts Devilman as a potential candidate and now 1000TOYS as a potential 6-inch action figure of the year. You might remember the big brother review. If not, go back and check it out. There are some differences in the figures, but for the most part the 6-inch version is an exact shrink-down of the 12-inch big brother.

When this figure was offered on the 1000TOYS website I was quick to snap on up. Ya’ll know me — if it is 6-inches, super-articulated, and looks awesome, I am all over it. And I am glad that I was because this figure is pure hand and eye candy. It looks amazing, is scaled to fit with just about any 6-inch line of action figures, and can pose like crazy. It is an amazing toy.

When compared to its big brother, the sculpt remained the same. I’ve held them up left and right and there are maybe a couple of minor differences. The ones that I notices are the shoulders and the chest rockers are different. Big brother has a complex design while little brother has a ball-and-socket like you get on and S.H. Figuarts. 1000TOYS even put a socket cover on the shoulder, which I like as it fills in the gap between the shoulder and pectoral making the sculpt look more fluid and less mechanical. The other differences are the head and feet. The feet on big brother are quite complex, made up of toes, foot, arch, and heel that all rotate or bend. The foot of the 6-inch figure is just a single sculpt attached to the ankle via a rocker ankle. Finally, the heads are different. Big brother has a removable face mask that reveals the robot face underneath; little brother has swappable faces.

The articulation is just about the same. There are a few less joints in the foot, but overall the articulation is spot-on the same. Yes, the joint design of the shoulder is different, but you get the same posability. During the past week I’ve tried to the the 1:12 figure into just about every pose possible and have succeeded in about every formation I can think of.

The price of the figure is about the same as an S.H. Figuarts. It cost me $65 to buy directly from them. It’s a steep price tag for a figure, three sets of hands, and an extra head. BUT I have to remember that this is a creator-owned project with limited production runs, and that is going to drive the price up. Where I won’t give other mass market companies a break on value for money, I am willing to do so with an independent, especially when the figure is as beautifully designed, engineered, and manufactured as this one.

If you are a collector of all wonders of action figures at the 6-inch scale, then I can’t recommend this figure enough. It is an amazing piece of modern engineering. It will fit with just about any 6-inch toy line you have and the price is competitive with most import toys of the same caliber.
