Has there been any indication when 2K3 turtles will be solicited?
The eyes look good, but there is something off about the rest of the paint on his face.
It's either Photoshopped or painted extremely simply. Like I did it, and that's not a compliment, lol. It looks...off...especially around the mouth/teeth/gums.
I don't know how else to explain or show what I'm seeing, but I just got my eyesight tested, and while not as good as in my 20s, it's still near-perfect, and nothing else looks odd or "wrong" on this monitor.
I think Donatello & Screwloose look great. Heck, I think most of the rest of Scumbug looks fine.
But there's something weird with that face that is throwing me, and I don't think it's just the shade of purple.
It’s the pink gums around his top teeth. They weren’t painted on the original toy, and it looks weird with them colored differently. The way the pink just stops halfway around the gums on the tusks is odd-looking too.
Also, wow, yeah, they really did skip a ton of detail on his insect torso. It’s so plain compared to the original. How is this worth more than a regular figure again?
That is a lot of detail to sort of glaze over, but to be fair, so little of it was actually painted on the Playmates figure, it’s hard to tell what’s what in the first place. Like all the roaches crawling all over him? At least S7 painted those, and it brings out a detail I barely noticed on the original. Still don’t get why this one costs more than the average figure though.
I think it's unfortunate he seems to be less gross than the original. I prefer the opposite out of these upscales.
I think the painted gums is a good point for why it looks wrong, but it's also the color of the paint. His mouth and top of his head should be a dark red to match the OG figure. Making them a medium fleshy pink doesn't provide the contrast needed to make it all work together.
So yep, this is another Ace Duck situation where Super7 ruins an otherwise good figure by not paying attention to the details.
Also, that lack of detail in the torso is insane. Super7 usually nails the sculpt, I wonder what happened here.
I don't like to make excuses for Super7, but it is entirely possible they were told by Viacom/Nick to make it look less like the Playmates version. I think that's why Wingnut looks a little different, why Donatello is in the less popular white outfit, etc. This wave seems to be where we started seeing more pushback with the one that followed even more so, which is a shame.
I'm almost more annoyed by the shirt color than anything else. But yeah, I could see this being the "change it just enough" thing getting in and screwing things up. If that's the case though...just...ugh. There's nothing there that warrants the price difference though, that's just straight up a middle finger to the customer.
I'm not happy to be paying extra for Scumbug as I'm not sure what extra I'm getting, but overall, I'm pretty happy with what we're seeing. Could his shirt have been more blue? Sure. Could he have had more torso detail or less pink gum paint? Also sure.
But, I feel like he hits the high points of the figure design well enough and will look great on the villians shelf. Let's be honest, we all get a figure, pay 100% attention to it for like an hour, then maybe 75% for a few days, then might go on a shelf where it blends in with the rest and becomes a part of a whole. I'd rather have a slightly flawed Scumbug than no Scumbug at all.
Like it or not, for me, this is more of a "display" toy line, and less of a "hand candy" toy line, so maybe I'm less critical of these things.
With Ace duck, there was a definite washing out of the colours. Some brighter paint on his beak and feet helped to make him pop a little on my shelf. I'll see if Scumbug needs any small tweaks. Shouldn't have to on a figure that costs this much, but so it goes.
Wingnut is looking great. Nice and big and hefty and has a lot of presence.
There's some videos up on Youtube, and I may be rethinking my choice not to get Zak, as there's just a certain 90s'ness to his whole colour scheme that would look great on the shelf, and really add some vibrancy to the good guys.
If there's anything I would complain about, it's the scale inconsistencies. Why is Ghengis so big, while Ace Duck is so small? Scumbug also looks to be a little undersized, which is weird because the villians have generally all been pretty big.
I got three figures in from EE (using those lovely influencer codes to knock some of the sting off the prices), Wingnut, Scumbug, and Zack. They kind of run the gamut of my feelings for the line as a whole.
Wingnut and Screwloose are excellent. Are they $75 excellent? Ehhh? I'd knock off $10-15 and that's a little better. But I will say, this set is probably one of the best we've gotten from Super7 in a long time. Nothing was too loose (fuck those hips though), some stuff was a bit too tight (but at least it holds its pose), and I wasn't sure the wing pegs were even going to fit, but they fit. After some heat. If you're just going after one figure, this is the one to get. Wingnut's got nice size, paint (even if it is a bit of a messy brown wash), and accessories. There's even some nice texturing on the blue costume elements. Really kicks it up a notch. Definitely a stand out figure.
Scumbug...mm. I really loved this figure as a kid, and I think the Super7 figure is okay. It is not worth the money at all and would probably be a better value at $40 and less. The shirt has a color and wash to it that make it feel like it's just dyed plastic. Like if you were coloring Easter eggs. It looks cheap. Which goes with the skin tone (which isn't as bad as April by any means), and even the coloring of the roaches. It's all too waxy and washed out. Also Jesus why do they go back and forth on allowing their figures to get a full 90 degree bend in the elbows?
Zack sucks. I like his colors, the metallic blue/green and golds look great, but as a figure? This is kind of the shining example of how Super7 can't make a good human figure. Limited range in the joints (elbows are bad, again!), frustrating neck joint, just...big meh of a figure. THIS is the figure that'll be hitting $10 clearance this year I bet. Also that hose sucks, it appears to be meant to plug into the back of the blaster rifle, but isn't sized right at all. I don't know how they didn't check that in preproduction. Oh you CAN get it on there, if you really heat it up and jam it so the hose is wrapped around the larger knob of the silver part...it works, but that's not how it's supposed to work.
Super7, just update your hip joints. Even Premium DNA is using the ball and cup system.
But, yeah, just buy Wingnut and Screwloose. The rest can wait for markdowns.
I recently picked up a couple just to fill some gaps. I consciously didn't preorder these, but still wanted them. With one of the influencer discounts, I grabbed Space Cadet Raphael and silver Shredder. I'm actually quite satisfied with both. Raph came out really well, at least to me. I think I might have been forewarned about the limited elbow range, so that doesn't bug me. I was concerned his hose wouldn't plug into his suit, but it does snugly and securely. I'm glad to have him to complete the first series of disguised Turtles (I customized a Donatello using parts from the undercover Raph). I wish they made more space themed characters to go with him; when I was a kid, Raph had adventures with Fugitoid to take on Dimension X baddies like General Traag and Triceraton.
Shredder is fine. Felt more mobile than the original, which I worried would break due to tight joints. This one was easier to move. I really like the silver armor, but I wish he had a grey chest plate or that his torso was at least painted grey rather than nude to look more like the cartoon design, since that's how they bill him.
I was watching ToyBro gush, as usual, over the new figures and it was truly kind of hilarious to watch him talk about how great and sturdy Wingnut is while his right hip is VISIBLY flopping around and ToyBro is having to adjust for it in real time to keep the figure standing.
Not saying he's not 'the best Super7 figure so far.' But like... that's a super fucking low bar.
Scumbug being $65 is still insulting. Maybe MORESO now that he's out and we can get a good look at him. I was expecting that they'd justify the grasping, cunty pricing by pouring tons of detail and paint into him. But they really didn't. He's just yet another figure that's kind of .. maybe not even better than the vintage toy?
Anyone remember when even the regular, re-use and smaller figures being $45 dollars was justified with the logic that the BIG figures would ALSO be $45 dollars and so it all balances out? Pepperidge Farms remembers.
And now figures are $55 regularly and Super7 has the absolute fucking temerity to charge more for not just larger figures but like.. just a regular-size figure too. What a clown that guy is.
That said... Wingnut looks good. If he were less expensive, I'd get him just because I actually really enjoy the concept and design. But he was never a figure I owned as a kid, or even cared to own. So nothing to grab me there. I would have liked Scumbug, but they really didn't do a great job on him and I don't think I'd be interested even if these were still $45.
Anyone have Slam Dunkin' Don yet?
Wondering how he turned out. I did not plan on picking him up, but I am pretty sure we are not getting his undercover variant.
I don't want to have 3/4 variant turtles, and would prefer Punker Don, but then that would open the door for other music turtles...
So if he turned out well, I could compromise and pick up basketball Donnie.
So, is anyone getting the Super Cyborg Krang Android?
I'd like to know if it's the same Krang (or same size, at least) as the Ultimates Bubble Walker we got, as if it is, I'd imagine this would be the only way they would be doing an "Ultimates" version of Android Krang...
I'm not planning on it, but I feel like they're doing it as a substitute for an ultimates version since that may be hard to get approved, plus it would be pretty damn big if the same scale was used as the vintage, but who knows? It's not like Super7 has ever shied away from a big, dumb, expensive thing. The super cyborg version looks cheap to me so I'm not planning on getting it unless it hits deep discount.
