I actually preferred the previously offered Rat King to this version, but at least they included the head from that one - the only head I would consider using. I honestly wish I could get the first version they solicited though - even though I'm probably the only one.
New rat king really should've come with those extra rats from the original
That Rat King looks excellent and is probably the second figure from this line I will buy after the original Leonardo. I want to grab a second edition Leo without the silver accents on the belt since I far prefer that look, but I'm hoping it'll eventually be discounted.
I think the ultimate issue is that we're probably not getting to those characters. Between Playmates interference, the pivot to 2003, and major clearance of Super7 stuff, it's looking more like if you're waiting for a certain toy to be remade, it might just not happen. Hell, I'm concerned about them getting out all 4 regular 2003 turtles if they spread em out over 4 waves.
Honestly, I think you are probably right. I mean, even with Playmates being a pain that shouldn’t stop them from doing characters like Tokka & Razhar or Dirtbag & Groundchuck, or “new” characters in vintage style like the missing frogs, Ninjara, etc. (like they just did Karai). But with 2003 now becoming the focus & waves being more and more variant heavy, the odds are slim of them hitting the remaining figures I’d like to see never mind anyone hoping for all the unique characters from the vintage line (minus the Playmates exclusive ones).
For 2003 I’m half expecting 2 turtles per wave based on the last few waves and to get them out in a (somewhat) timely fashion, especially with vintage waves in between. That said we’re back to basic look turtles & all the main characters so they may try and go over 4 waves again to try and boost sales.
I think Flynn said the first 2003 wave is all four Turtles.
It makes sense. It's tooling efficient. They cross-sell well. And it basically tells S7 where the ceiling is on 2003 stuff and whether they need to come up with something else for alternating non-vintage toy waves.
They do all four. They have the best potential of anything. If they bomb, S7 can drop 2003 like a hot potato.

I'm not sure if a full 2003 turtle wave will give S7 accurate feedback on 2003 figures as a whole. I can see a lot of collectors just wanting to buy a new set of turtles if they have interesting sculpts and decent articulation, but not much else from that era.
I could be in for a whole wave of turtles depending on how they look, but I don't want anything else from 2003 except maybe a Shredder, so I would skew their sales data quite a bit if they're trying to forecast demand off the turtles themselves.
The latest wave (Genghis, Space Raph, etc) is in stock at EE and eligible for their BOGO 50% off sale for anyone not so put off by the new reveals that they've quit the line. So $41 and change apiece before tax. Not bad at all but I think I'm still going to wait. Can't fool me seven times!

I just saw that. I'd been trying affiliate codes.
I saw a pic of that nomad Leo with the ...poncho? Thing? On...and it looks pretty bad. Feels like it should be more dynamic, more tears, cuts, holes...something. It just looks like an 80s teeny bopper with a cut sweater top on.
I heard a Super7 guy on a podcast recently talking about doing more new original Turtle designs in this line, but he said something kind of cagey and cryptic about having to account for their four personalities that somehow made my brain think maybe they're doing a Ghostbusters crossover.
But it was literally nothing, I'm just saying that's where my brain went for a fleeting moment.
I got in for the updates of classic toys. If they insist on original designs, I hope at least they steer in the direction of that gross-out aesthetic. What they think passes for "could have been in the original 80s toyline" is always too clean looking. Then I might buy it. If it's gross enough.
The problem is they really don't seem to "get" the Playmates gross-out, super detailed aesthetic when it comes to the TMNT line. Even this Nomad Leo is super dull and lifeless in comparison, or that April, or anime Rat King. It's all too clean. You need the uneven mutations, a bare foot and a boot and bones popping out and sores and rough skin and bugs and twisted faces etc etc. Instead it's just bare bones characters.
I may've watched the same thing you had where Kyle was on. Dude seems super nice, but he doesn't seem to have the mindset for the aesthetic. He was talking about having just seen The Thing for the first time too, as he doesn't seem to be a horror guy normally I don't think. I just wonder if artistically his mind doesn't really go into the goopy gross areas when coming up with stuff like that on a "new" figure.
Or I'm talking out of my ass. Either/or.
Kyle was on Geek Dad Life yesterday, and they talk about the sexy Rat King backlash, the new wave figure by figure, the BBTS sale, some random convo, and a bit about the 2003 wave. No real hard pushback or questions about QA issues, though Kyle did mention that the planning for the line is much more up in the air compared to the early days. Jay seemed to push the comments about fans wanting more Super7 originals as opposed to the usual chorus (myself included) just asking for more vintage mutants instead of variants.
He took the Sexy Rat King backlash pretty hard, which is understandable.
New wave - Ronin Leo inspired by Samurai Leo, and from context clues, sounds like there are more original designs for each of the brothers. Do with that what you will.
2003 figures - around the 1:18:00 mark of the video. Sounds like they're trying to stick close to the cartoon design vs the toys, and the current plan is for the core team and a few of the bad guys. Doesn't sound like they're intending to go super deep at this point, so pretty glad to hear it.
2012 isn't a thing at this point, not enough nostalgia for them, or, the people who grew up on 2012 don't have the kind of money that Super7 charges for a figure. Which, makes a lot of sense.
Kyle on Fwooshcast just posted with Veebs. Overall great so far. Not spending the first 95% of the interview talking about other less popular properties. Jumped almost right into TMNT! 🙂
Still wish at least one person would question their QC issues publicly, but I guess Super7 forbids anyone from asking them about problems with the line on camera as terms for getting the interview and free toys.
New Rat King looks amazing btw, great work Kyle!
