Dang, that's quite the haul. We've got like 16 pages of people complaining about the line and you're like "I'm going to buy everything!"
Honestly, if your nostalgia is strong enough for the vintage figures you won't be disappointed. I've got tons of gripes with the product but at the end of the day I'm glad they exist and that I own them. I just wish NECA was doing this instead of the incredibly inept Super7. But at roughly $25 apiece I think they're mostly solid pickups. Just be prepared to be let down by about 25% of them!
My clearance Samurai Leo came yesterday and I'll be gosh-darned if I'm not quite excited about him as a $22.50 figure. This line really does hit a special nostalgia spot that no other does for me. I can't swap his hands so he's stuck with two "mythic" open palms, his hips are so loose that he's always tilting slightly right, and I still think it's super silly that they used a matte gold when Playmates could do a metallic paint back in 1990 and charge $2.75. But despite those flaws I'm still transported back to receiving this figure for Christmas when I hold it. Super7 preys on nostalgia and they've got me with this line despite all of their stupidity.
I just won't be preordering or paying full price. That'd be silly.
Yeah, the hands suck. And they’re so soft that you’re more likely to tare them off the hinge than anything when trying to remove. I got the open hands off by heating just the figure’s forearms (you don’t want to heat the actual hand). I can deal with the other shortcomings, but not being able to freely swap the hands is what irritates me most about that figure. Once I got the gripping hands in I never took them out.
I got into the habit of opening new Ultimates with a blow dryer near. First thing I'd do, after checking out the paint apps, is try all the joints and swapable parts. If anything didn't work right, I'd heat it for a bit. For the weapons, I'd put them into the hands first, then put the hands into the body.
WELP.
I DIDN'T KNOW THE HATS WERE PERMANENTLY PART OF RAPH'S HEAD.
I see why Freditor went with a NECA hat for his S7U UCD instead...
My BBTS haul came in today.
Casey's really disappointing, but I knew the issues ahead of time. Fixing that weird disconnected waist and giving him some decent ankle rockers would've gone a long way. He's terribly hard to stand, but that's been an issue with every the Casey I've gotten recently (both NECAs). The golf bag just makes him too back heavy.
I opened Casey first and was starting to regret my purchases, but thankfully the rest of the figures were pretty great. Slash and Muckman are huge chonky slabs of nostalgia. Baxter's alright and I was surprised how much I liked Splinter. An alternate head with more of an expression would've been nice for him though.
Muckman's hips aren't loose...but they're also not super tight, so I can see him becoming an issue one day. But these are just gonna sit on a shelf and I'll occasionally pick them up or re-pose them.
I'll eventually pickup Bebop and Rocksteady and I think that'll be it for this line. These things are huge and I don't really have room to display more than that.
First look at updated Rat King? A Reddit user posted this picture stating they still have the preorder saved through BBTS and noticed the picture changed. Can anyone confirm? If you cancelled the old preorder, you should still be able to view it in your account history.
I think we’re seeing budget cuts hitting TMNT with this wave.
Good news, everybody!
Hot Rat King is officially dead and you’re getting bug infested lesions version!
and as a “consolation prize” a single Hot Rat King head is included.
I have absolutely no desire to spend $60 on a puss filled boil covered Rat King, so when these ship in three years someone who absolutely doesn’t want the Hot head (not Hothead) let me know! I’ll give you $10-$15 for it depending on if it’s painted by the good face print factory or the insulting-the-dead-Power-Rangers factory
Edit now that full wave is revealed: BD/Alpha-1 Foot Soldier is kinda cool, done better by NECA of course, But I’m a fan of this look so it’s nice to see Super7 make a version too.
what is up with this Leo?!?!
Is it an apology Samurai Leo by making a completely original nude Samurai design?! I’d love to know the design concept behind this one because I don’t get it.
I know it’s not, but it would be nice if the hat on Hip Hop Mikey was removable, if only because the tongue out Surfer head would look great on this outfit and it’s shame he can’t have a backwards hat with it.
I think we’re seeing budget cuts hitting TMNT with this wave.
That might be the case but I'm extremely happy with this reveal. Rapper Mike is another dream come true (after Punk Don and Classic Rock Leo) and I love that he comes with an alt head that seems to be a great replacement for the OG Mikey alt head. Rat King looks fantastic (at least in the promo's) and I really like Nomad Leo (even though he seems a bit lazy given that he's mostly re-use). Battle damaged Foot looks cool but will likely be a pass for me. It's been a while since they've revealed a wave where I'm interested in more than one figure.
Aaaand there it is. Two new designs that are just offshoots of figures that already exist, a (rather nice) variant, and a Rat King that is neither vintage nor all new. Don't get me wrong, he looks great, but he's missing every single accessory from the vintage figure. If this is what we can expect from Super7 going forward then the line is toast in my opinion.
The wave after this is supposedly 2k3, right? So we're probably looking at summer 2024 before we get another vintage wave to see if they're able to do anything else from the Playmates line. That's a lot more waiting to just be disappointed again.
The incentive bonus is incredibly mediocre - two more swords for Leo, toy green accessories for Rat King, a single undersized Turtle Shell Biter, and golden plastic nunchucks for Mikey.
I do like the Mirage-style packaging for Leo. The Foot Soldier is a nice take on the mutating Foot Soldier (that non-Alpha1 head is so close to the original toy, just in silver).
Also, slip covers have been confirmed as being dropped.
Please note that this ULTIMATES! Figure will not come with a packaging sleeve.
My initial reaction is "Not bad." Rapper Mike is wanted since they've already announced Punker Don and Classic Rock Leo. Just sucks that we're probably 2 years away from actually having Heavy Metal Raph in-hand so this quartet is going to take awhile to form. And the figure looks fine. That alt head would go right on my Series 3 Mikey which is currently using a Sewer Surfer Mike head, even though the scale is off.
Rat King is, more or less, the figure they should have announced originally but could not for reasons we don't need to rehash. They kept the pretty boy head for those upset about the change, but kept the grossness of the vintage figure which is way more appropriate for this line. Apparently accessories was where a line was drawn so instead of a dead cat belt it's a bandolier and there's no crossbow. The accessories shown seem fine though and possess their own charm. He's a "maybe" for me.
Battle Damaged Foot looks fine. I do think battle damage accessories is one area that Super7 actually does well and I like the little stump of wires it can use for a hand, though a totally new forearm would have been better. I didn't even bother with the regular Foot Soldier though so I don't need this. If it winds up on sale some day, then maybe.
And lastly, the Super7 original we heard about: Ninja Nomad Leonardo. If this is what we can expect of their original, in-house, designs, then oh boy are they not long for the world. This isn't a terrible looking figure, but what a boring design that does not fit the aesthetic of this line or the vintage line really at all. Only one set of gripping hands too and I wouldn't have any confidence in Super7 making sure it's the right set of gripping hands (the turn-around video at least shows them as vertical) that winds up in the box (so much for getting both with every turtle). The main selling point here is that those swords would work better with the Wave 2 Leonardo than even the Sewer Samurai swords, but who is going to pay 55 bucks for that privilege?
If you order all four from Super7 (they're all $55 a piece) you get a bonus weapons set that's really nothing special: bronze colored nunchaku, the Foot Soldier grabby polearm accessory that came with the Wave 1 version but with a new deco, monocolor (or glow-in-the-dark) versions of Rat King's accessories, and a pair of katana from Wave 2 Leo with deco matching the new figure. When offering a pre-order bonus it's always a fine line of providing incentive for customers to actually want them while also not alienating those who don't want all of the figures. I don't think they found that line here and I'd be surprised if this accessory set motivated anyone. So long as they're not withholding vintage styled accessories behind for the gimmick, I don't really care.
Rat King is a maybe. Foot Soldier is a "wait for a sale" figure. Leo and Mike are passes.
Ninja Nomad Leonardo. If this is what we can expect of their original, in-house, designs, then oh boy are they not long for the world.
I had this same thought after looking at the official photos. So far their original designs have been (IMO) a very boring Karai and Ninja April, a battle-damaged Foot that looks an awful lot like NECA's, and Leonardo with a hat and sandals. I know somebody there has an ounce of creativity and talent because The Worst are some really fun and unique designs. But these? These four figures are supposed to belong in the same line as Wyrm, Muckman, and Rapper Mikey?
Speaking of the promo photos, I wonder why they opted to skip the beauty shots this time around and just did flat renders instead. Budget? Their marketing is often cringeworthy for me but those pics were always quite nice and really did do a good job of selling the figures.
