I'll be hunting Memphis this weekend for all of the Archie stuff (and Mirage).
Next weekend I will be hunting in Atlanta so hopefully between the two cities I will find them.
Memphis is home to the closest Targets to me (still nearly 2 hours) and I go out to Atlanta a few times a year for Braves games and hunt along the way.
I can't find any Archie stuff. I feel like the Stormtroopers in Spaceballs because my friends will be like "Ya find anything?" And I'm always like "Man, I ain't found s***!"
But hopefully even if I never find them in the wild, they go up on BBTS and places like that. I want that STUMP Wrestling 4 Pack so much. But I want Leatherherad and Mondo Gecko too. I have the Toon versions, but I like all this Archie stuff.
Nothing at my local Targets today. I've been checking all week and today even had a guy take a look in the back for me. He was able to tell me that the wrestling turts are ticketed for an end cap. Seems like it's varied so far from store-to-store. Unfortunately for me, I leave for a little vacation tomorrow so I won't be able to check for again for a bit. Curse NECA for ruining my vacation!
Cryin' Houn' arrived today from Walmart. He's a big, beautiful, figure, but there's not much in the box for 50 bucks. Just the figure and 3 extra sets of hands. No fun, wrestling-related, accessories. No alternate portrait. His articulation is dreadful too. No neck joint so the head doesn't have much range. The shoulders don't have much clearance for the hinge joints. Elbows are all single joints and the diaphragm joint is useless on my figure. It does not budge and since the singlet is an overlay I'm guessing it's not going to move much for most. Legs are "meh," but he's pretty top heavy so what's there isn't very functional. This is a figure that I do like from a presentation standpoint, but it definitely doesn't put the "action" in action figure.
It’s wild to me that neither Cryin Houn or the rasslin’ turtles came with spinning turtle hand effects for Houn to use. It was such a classic move from the comic. Even if it’s just a spinning effect and you can pop a turtle head on there.
Several cases of figures on the carts at Target. Didn't see Belly Bomb who I didn't really plan on buying until I saw him on Instagram.
@misfit Cryin' has a really nice ball jointed neck (double barbel near as I can tell), was that not giving enough movement though? Considering that massive jaw, I thought he had pretty good head movement. I did have to get the torso joint moving on mine, but it does move way more thany ou'd think. The singlet kind of moves with it for the most part.
My usual TLDR:
Saturday morning wasn't shaping up to be any better with my first stop closest to home, but the Target employee in Electronics to help me was AMAZING, and told me that previous store I mentioned "still had some" which I took with a metric ton of salt, but since it was the next closest store (albeit in the opposite direction of my mom's, where I was heading), I went anyway.
Welp...they had more than Friday at noon. Got three out of the four Archies I was looking for (still don't have Bellybomb, and even more frustrating to find out that one of the stores I'd been checking on my way to work in the morning & on my way home every day last week had had some of him - AROUND NOON - one of those days I'd checked at 8am & 5pm), and was able to post about it in a local FB group to help out a bunch of other collectors.
They're a little bit bigger than the Toon Turtles, greens don't match even a little bit which doesn't really matter as any hands or heads would look tiny on the bodies, which would be fine if any of their grip hands HAD VERTICAL HINGES. *sigh* Backwards steps, NECA. Backwards steps. The new bodies are REALLY nice, though. REALLY nice. Though, with no pins in the elbows or knees, the hopes of painting Playmates colorways is made more impossible. (I don't like Raph's headsculpt, but that's me, and the other three are SO GOOD, even though they're not Chris Allan's lol, I'm dealing with it, but hoping they not only do different expressions for their regular bandana looks, but that the TiD swappable expressions gimmick is incorporated into them.)
Also, being a bit bigger, their grips are bigger as well. D/R/M are actually okay, but Leo's are so much bigger than the sword handles, if his thumb & forefinger weren't so close together, they'd fall right out.
I'm also not inordinately excited that Mondo is permanently stoned, lol. Coulda done swappable eyes like Dreadmon if they didn't wanna do another head. Leatherhead's mouth only closes in the front, also, the sides aren't much more closed than when it's opened, lol.
(With Imgur being blocked on my work computer, and having to transcribe the links from my phone to my computer, I really with they'd stop putting capital "i"s and lowercase "L"s in their links, LMAO)
I boiled off Arcade's vest & hat (but had to rip/slice the gator belly from the front opening) until we get a proper version.
Hope I can find Bellybomb soon, and Cryin' Houn' at all, but otherwise I'm super happy with these.
Came home from a vacation last night, too late to check Target, so went out this morning. First one had the wrasslin' turtles and Mondo. No Leatherhead or Belly Bomb, but considering they had some toon and Mirage as well I was fine with not dropping even more coin. I really like these wrestling turtles. Some stuck joints across all four that I'll have to mess with later (need to go get the kids from the in-laws), but these new bodies are pretty nice and have a nice feel to them. The waist/diaphragm joint feels a little more functional and I like the stylized nature of the hands, feet, and heads. Only downside, as Tenime mentioned, no vertical hinges. With all new sculpts, one would have expected those for the gripping hands. The thigh swivel that's built into the hip socket seems to be really recessed as well and hard to make use. That style of joint is always among the hardest to free up, but again, I'll mess with it later. Aside from the wrist hinges, the only real drawback for me is that the accessories are sparse and not all that much fun. The chair is great, but the soda, and can, are kind of worthless. The Flintstones-esque ring bell is also just kind of "meh." I would have liked another chair and I think at least Raph should have come with his signature weapons since he continued wearing this suit after the wrestling plot.
Thank God there were so many of those Stump Wrestling Turtles at Target (12 sets on the shelf!), cuz I was pouring over every one to find the set with the best paint. So many little scuffs or scrapes or crooked eyes! I’m pretty happy with the one I settled on, and I’m really liking these Turtles. It’s great to be able to have them stand up straight and not topple over after a minute. My only other wish is that they had given all of them an alternate headsculpt so we could’ve had different expressions.
Also picked up Leatherhead, and he’s okay. The headsculpt is pretty great. I was disappointed to find he was the same height as the Turtles, maybe even a little bit shorter. Felt like he should be bigger than them.
Skipped Mondo. I don’t like the expression they gave him.
Lucked out with catching Bellybomb when he was back in stock on Target’s website for ten minutes yesterday. Looking forward to getting him in hand. I didn’t have much interest in him til I saw how his mouth and eye works, and realized he had Krang who could sit on Slash’s shoulder.
It could've come with plenty of other characters (Stump, Sling, Houn, Leatherhead, Ace Duck, Fayme, Tyme, Trap, Bloodbath, "El Mysterio," Cudley), but I am very happy to have the ptero-bell.
And, man...at a point in my readthrough, I noticed the Universe Sourcebooks must've been made before the series ended, because it doesn't have everybody in the whole series (not counting Forever War, because, while "canon" it's still not published by Archie), but if NECA could just make everybody in those 3 issues (A-M, N-Z, UPDATE), I will be very happy (and very f-ing miserable trying to obtain them, knowing NECA's distribution tactics).
No sign of the Stump set at all by me. Would probably buy just because it's the four.
Caved on Stump this morning. Only had Leatherhead, no Mondo or Belly Bomb.
So what is the best wrestling ring currently available for the wrestling turtles? It is hard to tell how big they are looking on Amazon.
I thought about picking up the old Grayskull one for them. I'm sure Neca will make one but I'm also sure it will be $150 minimum.
I've been thinking about that.
I have one of the first Mattel Elite WWE rings, but feel that might be too big (it's currently in storage for that very reason). I'm leaning towards one of the cheaper, "basic" WWE rings. Target has an old school classic ring with a cage that wraps around it that I'm considering.
