If you watched Clone Wars they tell you how Maul survived. He literally was so angry his hatred kept him going. Probably had some dark side force shit going on there too, but I don't think they went into detail on that.
There are also a few instances of other people dying from just one saber stab wound, but mostly in video games and clone wars. It kind of also depends on where you get stabbed. I think Qui Gon had his spine severed and it probably got some major organ. If you get stabbed in the heart or lungs I'm pretty sure you're dead. But a not so vital place, sometimes you'll be alright. The way I would understand it, the saber would probably carterize the wound as well, since its searing heat and energy. So you're not gonna bleed out like with a metal blade. But it'll liquefy whatever organ it hits, or even comes close to.
But these are kind of attempts to logically explain it. Honestly, it's all just storyline. Qui Gonn died so Obi Wan would train Anakin. The others lived to advance storylines, and keep popular characters from biting it too early.

Oh no, I'm aware of the reason they gave for Maul's survival. But as you said - it's an ad hoc, after-the-fact, half-hearted explanation for just 'we want to use Maul again because he was popular.' That doesn't, within the logic of the universe or even just from a writing perspective, make it not absolutely fucking ridiculous.
Qui-Gon died because he was stabbed through the spine and a major organ, but Maul's spine was also severed in basically the same spot and all of his organs at the waist level were liquefied. I'm actually way less mad about Qui-Gon dying than I am about Maul surviving. That might be one of the few things in Star Wars (pre-Rise of Skywalker) that I legitimately hate. So dumb and creatively bankrupt.
It's nice seeing The Phantom Menace and Maul discussed. TPM is definitely my favorite prequel movie, and probably my favorite Star Wars movie. I have seen it so many times it's ridiculous.
And Darth Maul is one of my all-time favorite characters.
Even though I enjoy the Sequel Trilogy (they are not anything I ever would have done or dreamed of, but I still enjoyed them), I wish we would have got George Lucas' actual Sequel Trilogy where Maul was the head of the Crime Syndicate and had taken Darth Talon as his apprentice.
That being said, they've REALLY done Jinn dirty in newer media by basically making him the only chump in the history of the galaxy to die from a stab wound.
Ohmylord, have you seen Charlie Hopkinson's Star Wars deep fake series on YouTube? It's Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon watching the Star Wars series. Qui-Gon gets so mad every time somebody survives a sabre stab.
Re: lightsaber deaths. Not a single, solitary person anybody's ever seen killed or not-killed by a lightsaber is a human being. AFAIK, nobody knows where any of these 'vital' organs are or should be so this whole discussion is pointless navel-gazing based on the faulty assumption they even *have* vital organs, much less that they're in the same place or do the same function as those found in a human. At least super-hero stuff has that reasonable ground assumption but these are all aliens with some of them merely having a similar appearance to us; but y'all may as well be talking about where to stab a Kryptonian or a Kree in order to one-shot kill them when y'all have no idea where their stuff is.

I may not be current in my lore, but I figured Reva and Sabine were human. Or are you saying they're not from Earth so they probably don't have lungs?
To the bigger idea, though, I'd feel cheated if every duel featured no risks because nobody really knew how to kill them. Which actually feels like where we are now.
I am saying they're humanoids, but not humans. Assuming they have lungs, what's telling you they have a pair of them, broken into un-even number of lobes for each like we humans? How do you know they need oxygen and not methane? The plain and simple fact is that until we get to watch a Star Wars autopsy, nobody knows anything substantive about what's going on under the skin, certainly not to the point of saying with authority a hit from an imaginary weapon should or shouldn't kill them.
Point of fact: there's not a single iota of objective information that tells us they're human-sized, either. All these beings could easily be 6centimeters tall, for all we can tell from watching what we're shown.
We do know they have ducks heh. And Hell.

This just broke my brain. Like I just looked over at my display shelf and said, out loud... are they life sized replicas?
I guess... Maybe? Given the size of that potato in Empire.

The government has done autopsies on those aliens, but suppressed their findings. If you know the right people, you can still get copies of bootleg tapes of those autopsies. You just can’t tell the government. They’ll deny everything. Keep it on the down low. They’ll come looking for you.

I think the closest thing we've gotten to an autopsy was Fennec, right? Not counting Vader, I guess. We at least know that a character's intestines can be replaced with cybernetics. But I do always lean on the logic that the characters we see, even the "humans", are technically aliens, and so their inner workings may not be the same as ours. Then again, even in real life, people survive getting cut in half and such. Might be tricky, but not impossible. Maybe Maul twisted the blade, or did an extra slice that we didn't see to keep it PG. Maybe Qui-Gon had just had enough and wanted to peace out.
Star Wars has always been a little silly at times. It's why we have things like Force Headbutt and Force Scream that play a part without really playing a part. Or the fact that blood is such a rarity (at least until recently). It's the same logic as Sean Astin's infamous question when he asked the LOTR cinematographer where the light was coming from in the scene because he didn't believe it, and the guy replied "Same place as the music." Things just happen because it's part of the story.
Though I'm now quite fond of the idea that they're all super tiny and our Black Series figures are all life-size (or twice the size, if they're all more TVC size).
Speaking of, and to keep things somewhat on topic, the Night Owl Sister got revealed today for Wal-Mart collector con next month, and she's just a repaint of Koska. Looks nice, but not sure if it's something I need right away. I think Greef's droid is supposed to be included in the Con as well, and that would be nice to have, especially now that Carl is no longer with us.
I’ve always had to suspend my disbelief when I see a character die from a simple slash across the torso by a lightsaber. Those look even less damaging compared to a stabbing.
That Night Owl Sister’s helmet looks humongous on that body, but I love the colors on Greef’s astromech.
I appreciate army builders though I am not building an army of Mandalorian's. I didn't even keep the Ax Woves figure I got.
Well we know they breathe oxygen, cause in some episodes they talk about breathing it on certain planets and when gas leaks happen and whatnot, like the episodes with the Dinosaur Alien thing. And they can't breathe under water, cause they have rebreathers on, or scuba suits. I'm pretty sure they use the term human a few times describing some of the not alien looking people as well. But if you want episodes and timestamps I don't have any, that'd be hard to actually dig up. But I did watch Clone Wars a few times through the whole way, and I'm almost positive those things weren't necessarily discussed thoroughly, but alluded to or shown briefly. Even in TPM Qui Gonn and Obi Wan have to hold their breathe in the gassed room and use rebreathers when swimming to Oto Gunga. But, it is a Galaxy far far away, so they at least possibly evolved different to where their organs could be in different places, and their skin and bone density could be different. I'm honestly a little baffled by the fact the gravity is the same on every planet they've gone to lol.
Death in Star Wars was always odd though. Padme died cause she was sad. But Palpatine survived being thrown into a reactor of a giant ass space station, not to mention the long fall, and subsequent explosion of said station. That dude should've been vaporized and if not thay then frozen in a vacuum right after. Leia survived space but she was all kinds of fucked up when she got back to the ship. And I'm not 100% sure any of that is canon lol.
TPM is probably my second favorite of the movies. I saw it in theaters 5 times, and went to the release day. I bought it on VHS and watched it so much I had to buy a new copy, then got it on DVD, and have them all on Blu Ray Steelbook. I also played the game for the og Playstation at least 30 times. And then the other game that came out that let you play as Plo Koon, Mace Windu, and Adi Galia, as well as Obi Wan and Qui Gonn, and it was multi-player, so my sister and I played the shit out of that so many times to level up each character. I liked that you could have Qui Gonn survive in that one.
Maul is probably in my top 5 fave characters. With the movie, I really loved his design and fight scenes. Probably the best dual in the movies. Maybe second best, cause Obi Wan and Anakin in RotS was pretty badsss. But then when they brought him back, and he was played by Sam Witwer, he shot close to the top. Sam is a fantastic dude. I met him and hung out with him for a bit. He really loves star wars. He's a huge nerd like me about it, and probably knows more too lol. But I've liked him in everything he did, and loved him as Galen, who is also really high up there on my list of faves. If he's not top 5 he's probably number 6 or 7. But it's hard to number them lol. And meeting him was one of the highlights of my life. It was such a good experience.
I've watched some of the Charlie Hopkinson's series. It's hilarious. Definitely worth the watch. I love how he does Qui Gonn eating all the time yet he's a force ghost, so why? Lol.
