Gotta be honest: I've been consuming some MotU media for the first time the last couple weeks (DC comics, Revelation/Revolution, 200x, Netflix CG, to various degrees) and quite enjoying it, and ... I kinda wish they'd do more of the Netflix CG show in Masterverse. I think a lot of the redesigns are fun and unique and would like to see them continue to slot them in once in a while.
I don't disagree, but also it's never going to happen. They tried those designs in the limited-articulation line for kids and it bombed incredibly hard. Kids, the target demo for that cartoon, don't care. And despite it actually being a great cartoon, I don't think there's enough adult MOTU fans out there that want those looks. If anything, maybe they'd be a better fit in Origins because it tones down some of the crazy proportions adults tend not to like, and brings the price point down a little lower for those with only a passing interest in those looks.
Oh, no doubt. Maybe it'll be one of those things people appreciate more a decade down the line and it'll get a few more for "nostalgia". 🙂
Here's the thing - and I said it at the time. If they had used the costumes and character beats from the modern show on the normal Masterverse bodies I would have been ALL OVER getting every character from that show in the line. But instead they pulled those mosntrously stupid proportions and goofy looks into the larger scale and so that was a HARD PASS.
I know people give Mattel crap about their "classicizer" machine where they put all iterations of the brand into a unifying aesthetic - but for me that was the single best thing about Classics. Honestly I wish Masterverse had done more of it. I would like many of the early Masterverse figures better if they were just slightly less cartoony. And, like i said, if they had done that with the characters from the kids cartoon - i would have bought all of those - fresh new looks (and even some new genders) for familiar characters would be a huge win. But the goofy asinine proportions were a non-starter.
Been wondering about this but did Mattel ever make that black knight looking guy from the original MOTU line mini comics in the 80s? Can’t remember his name, but I think he had a black and purple color scheme going on. I remember he and HeMan going in a straight up fist fight. Always thought that guy was pretty tough. Be nice if we got a Masterverse version of him.

Do you mean Lodar?
If so, the answer is not quite. A classics Lodar exists but he was made by Super7 not Mattel.
If you meant a different purple and black character then I'm going to go with "no".
Yeah, that’s him. I think an updated Masterverse of him would be cool To have.

Oh man, see, I couldn't disagree with this more. I feel like what you want is what New Eternia is, and I'm super glad that the Revelation/Revolution stuff exists alongside it, and wish they'd put more of the CG stuff there too. I love the redesigns and wouldn't want them compromised. In fact, the only one I don't care for so far is Stratos, but that's cuz they didn't do anything interesting with it, imo. But maybe he gets a Grayskull upgrade in an episode I haven't seen yet, I dunno. I just watched the one that debuted Man-E-Faces and I absolutely would've liked a big figure of him looking just like he does on the show. There is even art out there for characters that didn't make it to the show before it got canceled that I would buy figures of. I'm also one of those that really liked Transformers Animated. There are certain franchises (this, TMNT, Godzilla) where I get as big a kick out of redesigns/reinterpretations as I do out of what is considered classic for them. I can understand when people don't feel the same way though.
So here's the thing - I don't mind that toys of the cartoon aesthetic exist. But if they exist in Masterverse, I want Masterverse to have one consistent unifying aesthetic. Something more than "these are all roughly the same height".
I want to be able to display all of my Masterverse figures together in a cohesive display - the He-Man and Skeletor from the HATMOTU cartoon that were made in Masterverse absolutely do not work in that context. They look ludicrous with their tiny little legs and enormous shoulders. Even the figures based on the Kevin Smith toon are workable as the same species as the stuff from New Eternia and New Adventures.
Huh, I guess I just haven't thought of Masterverse that way. To me, the name implied a multiverse, and the line is composed of various sublines, with New Eternia basically being the Classics one.

So.. I do think Mattel sort of started off intending it that way - using Masterverse as their overarching Collector Line with larger scaler, higher POA target - with varying aesthetics.
This is true - the Revelations/Revolutions line, vs the New Eternia line, to even trying to include figures from the newer cartoon.
But - in practice their New Adventures, Princess of Power and other sub-lines hewed closer to the New Eternia aesthetic as well. So while it's true the Revelations/Revolutions figures still honor the looks from those cartoons - they operate on more or less the same bodies as the rest and it's down to face sculpts and flourishes to make up those differences.
And I think that will fade into the background more now with less of the Amazon show and this will become more like the catch all that Classics ended up being.
I dunno if I agree with that, but I don't think I'm interested enough to argue it further either. 🙂 I don't mean that negatively at all, just don't feel strongly enough about it. I took the various logos as indicators of distinction, and I like the options, personally, and have both versions of a number of characters at this point.
To be fair - you responded to the argument I made first - which I decided was wrong. I amended it because your point was valid. And fair enough. No need to discuss further - and you are certainly free to enjoy all the flavors.
Please don't think anything I said was meant in an irritated or argumentative manner. Mostly I was just smiling to myself about how totally different our takes were.
Absolutely no - I just wanted to make sure you knew the same - it's all respect and good natured conversation. We're talking about toys here man, it's never anything to get too worked up about 😀

Yeah, but in the same sense if you go to an MCU movie, which features the entire Marvel Multiverse - you probably still expect all the characters to be live action or live action-like CGI. It would be weird to watch the new Deadpool movie and a fully animated Jim Lee style Jubilee becomes one of the main characters. Sure, some people would find it hilarious or fun. But I suspect most people would find it jarring and off-putting.
Ultimately, I'd say most people looking at a 'multiverse' still want it to appear unified. Different -versions- of He-Man, in this case, rather than different -artistic expressions- of He-Man. Like how everyone wants Marvel Legends figures to look like they belong together and not be based on specific artists' interpretations.
Not to dredge this up to cause drama - just adding my two cents. I think my opinions align with PC's, if expressed slightly differently.
And also - again - I'm not opposed to the CGI show having figures that look exactly like the show. I own the He-Man figure, after all. But I think it would have been smarter if the CGI show dedicated line was just.. better... and the incorporation of those character designs in Masterverse were brought into the overall Masterverse style. Then those that want the show-accurate stuff can get it, and those that want those designs reimagined as more standard He-Man style characters can get that version instead. Or both.
I'd probably get both.
I guess I do think of Masterverse as Legends. In which you get both MCU and comic book and animated and video game figures. I didn't mean "multiverse" in a literal sense, just that you get figures from across properties/media. I mean, I'd love for them to do some characters/designs in Masterverse from the DC comics too (that jaw-less Skeletor from the "vs. DC" miniseries....).
And yeah, I would've been perfectly fine with them doing a non-kids line for the CG show. It doesn't ultimately matter to me whether they were labeled Masterverse or not, I just wanted collector-type figures of those designs. I was just glad to see they did some at all.
