I don’t mind having upgraded figures of the old characters but don’t have that be the main focus of the line. If they would have introduced old characters as a complete crew in a boxed set that could double as a display similarly to how they introduced TOS to the 90s line, that would have been ideal. I don’t know maybe a Discovery heavy line might not have been a strong enough launch to carry the line. Maybe they thought the same about the first two seasons of Picard. As has been the tradition or curse Star Trek has since the run of TNG those Series usually don’t find themselves until the 3rd Season. So maybe it might have been more of a winning formula to launch with a first wave of Captains from each Series followed by first officers and so on. More variety in waves might make the line more appealing. I really don’t care if they go more with a standardized Star Trek Legacy packaging instead of the retro if that’s more commercially viable for them. Just give us better details on accessories. I’m still really hoping we get some figures from Enterprise.
Enterprise is my main want also. I think the main problem is the one or two light waves a year. That won't cut it. If they had a release schedule on par with other toys lines they could really balance things out better. As it is it seems like they need the strong anchor characters to appeal to the retailers but that only leaves room for one or two new characters. Also there are versions of the heavies we've never gotten if they need to include them. Give us Generations Kirk (vest look) and Generations Picard (DS9 uniform with the updated com badge). Same with Riker, rolled up sleeves DS9 uniform. Give each wave a theme maybe. Target purchasing people don't know the difference between the uniforms, they just want Picard or Kirk. Hopefully since Playmates is apparently trying to figure the line out better rather killing it they'll come to the conclusions a lot of us armchair commanders are bringing up!
Hmm, the contest says I got '1 entry', which maybe means we can enter more than once. Probably once per the various platforms they let one choose.
That's a really nice pic of Chekov, too. Maybe the best looking likeness of them all, so far.
I'm intrigued by the Hiya toys -- may pick up the core crew from the 2009 film if they look good in reviews.
Has there been any word at all regarding the second wave of Playmates Star Trek Universe 5" figures? Other than those clandestine pics leaked a million years ago.
@asm (Cough Cough) SCOTTY! (Cough Cough)
I'm loving the Hiya offerings so far.
Kirk, McCoy, Spock, Spock Prime, Nero, Keenser & Chekov so far (along with Spock in spacesuit) is a pretty good lineup out of the gate.
Assuming Uhura, Scotty & Sulu are on their way (perhaps Pike, too?). Would be nice to see them re-use the Uhura body to give us Carol Marcus from Into Darkness.
I may get a Chekov
the only one I am looking forward to is Uhura
the Playmates version is lacking in articulation

*Every* figure in both scales from that PM2009 line are wholly garbage in their entirety. I literally buy the 18ths for the sole purpose of cutting them up for ankle, knee, and elbow joints to graft onto custom figures. You know you're a shit company when the best thing about your product is the goddamned chair.
Chekov looks great. It'll be so nice to finally get him in his yellow shirt. I remember I really wanted him in his yellow shirt from the original line, but we only ever got him (and Bones) in their red cadet uniforms. I think the big Uhura came in her cadet uniform as well, but the 3 3/4" one didn't, at least.
What an odd line that was. The weird rubber shirts on the 6 inch figures. The 3 3/4" figures were nice (at least for the time), and I loved the build-a-bridge shtick, but the actual Bridge playset was so strange. Even as a kid, I didn't like the thin plastic mat for the floor. And the fact that the second wave of figures never came out meant we were forever stuck with a half-assembled Bridge.
Really looking forward to collecting this line. I only have a few Injustice figures from Hiya (a line I'll forever be bummed they never went more in depth with). I really wanted/still want to collect their AVP line. That's another one I have great nostalgia for from my childhood, but all I ever see in stores anymore are the cloaked Predators, which I don't have any interest in, and the main ones all seem to be out of stock or a pretty penny online. Not gonna make the same mistake with these.
The 3 3/4" figures were nice (at least for the time),
Absolutely the fuck they were not. There is not a single criterion they succeed at; sculpt, detail, paint, articulation format or workability, all terrible. They're easily the worst 'fully-articulated' (swivel hips on a figure automatically make that a lie) 18th figures made this entire century so far. Whoever lead that project and approved those figures for full production should never work in the action figure field again.

Hey, I was a poor kid, and they were some of the only things we could really afford at the time. I guess the lower quality meant more likely to go on sale, which was cool for me! 😀 Looking back now, I can definitely see how awful they were/are, and a lot of my feelings are definitely nostalgia-based. But hey, I'm easy to please in general.
Needless to say, I'm definitely looking forward to these. These are what the old ones looked like in my head at the time, if that makes sense.
While we're on the topic, I wonder if the old accessories would work with these new ones- namely the chairs and Bridge pieces, or if they'd be too out of scale.
@joshsquash729 I completely feel you. We have different experiences of toys as a kid vs what we wants as collectors. My brother & I could've cared less about 18 points of articulation and balljoints - we just wanted figures from the cartoons/movies we loved!
And honestly - I still think the 3.75 Uhura was a pretty solid figure. Both of the Spocks had good likenesses too.
I hope this new line does decently for Hiya and they also look into other areas of the franchise. Strange New Worlds definitely deserves some plastic love.
Uhura & Spock 3.75" are the only ones I kept but they are likely to be sold soon. 🙂 It says a lot that the only licensee to really ever do justice to the Kelvin cast was Burger King!
