I think Nacelle's Trek figures look great! Brian seems adamant (almost belligerent) about not doing core characters in classic outfits. The note I'm emailing them below sums up my feelings on the line:
Hello (again) Nacelle Team,
I just had an opportunity to watch a stream of your NYCC Stark Trek launch. Based on the slideshow and paint masters that we’re shown, the new Star Trek figures look fantastic! I am concerned, however, about your reluctance to make main characters in their standard most recognizable outfits.
While it’s true than many collectors have plenty of Kirks, Picards, Datas, and Worfs, there are some collectors like myself who may have missed past offerings by prior toy companies, especially in the 6”-7” scale. Looking at the high secondary market prices, I’d appreciate the chance to get some of these core figures at an affordable price. Based on the photos from NYCC, I have no doubt Nacelle’s versions of these characters would be of better quality as well.
Also, not every collector purchases their figures solely for shelf display. Many collectors, like myself, like to re-create scenes with my figures, sometimes via photography. Having a Jelico or Shelby that doesn’t match a Riker in color, style and detail makes this difficult to do.
I very much appreciate your mission statement for this line: to make never before made characters, including core characters in unique, non-standard outfits. I only ask that you consider some of us that do not already have an expansive Trek collection, and that you please include one or two core characters in their standard/classic outfit per each wave.
Sincerely,
Joe
The figurs look great (although I'm still not sure about the scale - do they fit marvel legends/black series?), but that is indeed one weird line-up. Especially for a first wave. I don't think there are that many fans - even hardcore ones - that truly want a Tuvix or Valkris. I'm not even against buying characters like them, but before I add those to my collection, I want the main crews first! Star Trek is a crew- and team-franchise. You want to put together groups that are... heh uniform. I just don't know what's so hard to understand about that.
The line up reminds me of the Super7 Simpson ultimates.
The figures look great, though. The one I'm most interested is in Jellico, but it’s not a burning gotta have it now.
I have literally never seen a Star Trek line-up where I recognized only one character - Tuvix.
I get that that's on me. But... to make one character from Yesterday's Enterprise and it ISN'T Tasha...
So Nacelle's mission statement is to make completely new characters in 1:10 scale? But the problem with that is DST didn't make ANY Voyager characters - so Tuvix is going to be the first one? TUVIX? So which collection and/or collector are these super niche characters actually appealing to - the Playmates collector or the DST collector?
They're making Playmates characters for DST collectors. How is this sustainable?
The owner of Nacelle has stated that he wants to make characters that can 'fill the gaps' in his own collection. I get that. But what about my collection, or any other consumers collections? I fine with leaning in on some deep-cut characters, but I want the core/classic Trek figures too. Also, I'm less interested in Valkris when I don't have a 7" Kruge to pair her up with. I'd be more inclined to pick up Peter Preston if I knew I could get Scotty in his radiation suit too.
I honestly don't want any of these characters except for maybe the Star Trek VI Captain Sulu they mentioned, but part of me feels obligated to support the line to some degree in hopes they get to characters I want.
This guy sees GI Joe Classified and Star Wars Black Series as his model, but look at how many Dukes, Roadblock, Snake Eyes, Han Solos, and Lukes Hasbro pumps out. There's something to be said for evergreen characters keeping a line alive and healthy.
I dont own any other Star Trek figures, but really appreciate the old playmates approach here. I wouldn’t mind only buying the figures from the series’ I like (DS9 and Picard). If Marvel Legends waves are any indication, I think that could work. I would be down for Weyuon and any DS9 characters, but these are 7 inch, right? I expected 1/12 scale, like black series figures.
Also, did DST make a lot of DS9 figures to begin with?
Have they mentioned a pricepoint yet? Those characters flat-the-fuck are *not* going to start up a long-lived line unless they're cheap enough for buyers to impulse-buy every one of them, imho.
"flat-the-fuck" is my favorite phrase of the week. And very well-used in this case. 🙂
This is the EXACT style of figure I wanted to see. Now I know I always say I want a more diverse selection but this is diverse. CAPT Sulu is probably the closest to an A-list in the wave. Midshipman Preston before Kirk, Spock or Picard? Ballsy! I may get my CMDR (or ADM) Shelby finally!

Indeed, Brian says in the Q&A that if there could have been a ninth figure in this wave it would have been Shelby. He also spoke highly of Tasha’s alternate timeline appearance in Yesterday’s Enterprise, so we may have gotten a preview of some of what he is planning for waves 2 and 3 in those remarks. I’d get those.
For wave 1 I’m probably in for Garrett and Mirror Archer.
Garrett is not essential, but planning ahead she will look good posed near Alternate Timeline Yar and Castillo (I presume we will get that core trio eventually).
As for Archer I want to support every Enterprise figure that Nacelle makes because it’s the underdog series. Enterprise is as important as TNG to me, and it seems that Brian feels strongly about it too - mentioning seasons 1 and 4 as favorites.
I’m passing on the rest, which are mostly from series I don’t care about. I like the sculpt of the TNG uniform as seen on Jellico - good shoulder joints - but I don’t like his character. At a planned $30 each I need to be selective. (Though I regret being too selective about the Art Asylum figures way back when!)

I read it was priced at about 30 bucks. These are apparently going to hit Target and Walmart, where I guess they will either sell or get clearanced out.
Isn't that what happens to every product that hits a store?
And at least Cmdr. Shelby is a character I remember! I haven't watched TNG in decades aside from a few episodes, the movies and Picard, but YIKES.
Y'know what could work: release Picard but with the alt head of Jellico - people can get the main character or people can get the rando - or, best case, people buy two for both!
I really, really like the look of that Jellico. I hope we get the more well-known characters at some point because I felt like the Super7 TNG figures were a let-down. And the Exo-6 faces are not nearly good enough imo.

That would be a really good idea since the majority of the characters are regular humans in Starfleet uniforms
You could even mix them from various series, like early DS9 Bashir and Voyager's EMH Doctor have 95% the same body, just include swappable heads, maybe an extra arm for EMH's light emitter and boom - 2 characters with minimal tooling/cost requirements

I'll give them this, the figures do look really good. Hopefully the quality is also good, and these actually make their way to the retailers mentioned. I never did see either of the two McFarlane Toys figures at Target.
I do get why they're concentrating on characters that have never had figures before, but I do wish they were doing some of the regulars as well. These are great for people who have big collections of the old AA/DST figures, but that's about it. I would especially love to see them do the entire main cast of Enterprise eventually. Those one's especially need new figures that don't have the rubber suits the Art Asylum ones had.
