I believe him when he said they had to do research on if they could do vac metal, and I don't begrudge collectors looking for that retro toy experience.
But I don't think anybody was looking for Dull Grey Plastic Hawks.
Now that Brian can be overruled maybe Tigersharks will be good
It must be impossible to paint over vac metal like that because that was my biggest gripe about the original vintage figures. The flesh paint came off of their faces too.
It doesn't look like they're painting over the vac metal, but it's possible whatever plastic mix they had to use in order to get the vac metal coating to adhere well isn't conducive to paint. Or this is an isolated case and the guy got a bad one. There must have been vintage toys, Silverhawks or other IP, that had a mix of vac metal and paint on parts. I can't recall any of them having flaking issues on the paint. The vac metal yes, as that stuff chips away easily. Either way, I assume these figures will need to be handled with kid gloves. I'm a bit surprised they went this route without doing less intense vac metal parts on other figures like a vac metal TMNT Metalhead or just ReAction Silverhawks. They're basically jumping right into the deep end with fully vac-metaled 7" figures that are covered head to toe with swapping parts. That's a tall order and from a company consumers don't have a ton of confidence in when it comes to quality control and engineering. I hope it works out though.
The next wave of Silverhawks will be announced in August. It's not yet confirmed if it will be a Cartoon wave or a Toy wave.
So, will a brush-on matte clear coat protect the faces, or no?
Thank god for BBTS' Sezzle payments, because I would've had to cancel these (and they were presold out when they dropped, so I didn't want to chance waiting & losing out on them - of course, they're all currently in stock except Quicksilver).
No idea when I'll ship my PoL, though, so hopefully they get reviewed to heck for me to be prepared for when I finally do.
Really don't want to have to watch ToyBro's gross thumbnails, though...lol
I think the only saving grace for me on these is that I never intended to display the face on this figure - only the fully helmeted version in flight. So maybe if I treat them gently they'll serve the intended purpose for my display.
I'm definitely not defending these - but it's sunk cost now, so I am hoping they will be at least serviceable for my intended use.
I have this not so subtle feeling, that Brian saw these QC issues in pre-production and decided that "well this will cull the 'why didn't you make Vac-Metal first' banter". This could certainly have been addressed, but for reasons...not.
I'm glad I canceled my first wave pre-orders and I am ecstatic I didn't order these. ThunderCats will likely be the only and last products I buy from them.
That's a bit sad as I was looking forward to having a 1/10 scale display of my favorite cartoon figures even though thats not my preferred scale. Only Mattel is delivering the product I want there, with NECA doing,,,okay.
That's a shame. Between Simpsons and now Silverhawks, I think BBTS is going to be hitting Super7 for a lot of charge-backs or whatever it is they do when they refund people for defective merch. Hopefully Super7 doesn't have them start making people return the defective product and create a bigger hassle than the one they started already.
Vacu Quicksilver is in my pile of loot. I may cancel him for store credit. I hate to do it since I did preorder him, but it sounds like it's a questionable product.

I've had no issues with mine. I'm not sure what others are doing to the figures to cause these issues.
@ashtalon BBTS is pretty generous when it comes to defective merch. If vac-metal 'hawks are something you want I'd still go for it. Worst comes to worst, BBTS is giving you back your money and probably letting you keep the defective merch.
If anybody wants to hear Flynn gush about his new, shiny, figures, the June interview with Veebs is up:
I recall back during SDCC that Brian was showing (I think) Pixel Dan the figure protos, and mentioned that the articulation was going to be a problem THEN. If people ignored that fact and assumed things would somehow miraculously improve, that's on them.
Vac metal on vintage toys has deteriorated since the 80s, and factories these days can't use the same formulas and methods to create and apply it, so there were bound to be issues with the new techniques on more articulated figures.
A shinier metal paint job would have been the better option, but you have the people bitching and moaning that they wanted the toy looks, so Brian found some way to do it.
Has Brian ever lied or misled his potential customers before? For sure, but I find it hard to believe he set out to release a product that he knew would crumble once it hit open air just to shut people up.
I won't fault Super7 for trying vac metal, even if it turns out to be a disaster. At least we'll know it's a pretty terrible idea. If these are so bad that they won't continue the vac metal hawks, then they should just pivot to ultra shiny paint. That Czarface figure they did looks pretty good from what I've seen, and Bandai did a very metallic looking Metal Cooler in its DBZ line. Vac metal is just one path for giving fans what they want, but it's not the only one.
