Got in the Demoniacal Fit Martialist Forever base form Goku. This is my first DFit product outside of their "Trunkus" heads.

Five-star figure for sure, and overall the best base form Goku figure to be made so far.

Highlights:

  • Solid construction, I can grab him by the waist and wiggle him and all the joints stay firm and there's no rattling.
  • Amazing to have the arms going into wrap around sleeve sockets as opposed the the old crescent sleeves solution. Also ditching those thigh cover pieces that get in the way.
  • He is absolutely hand candy, and hard to put down. Think the Krillin figure, which this one is in part based on. Also of note: his orange/blues are the exact shade as Earth's Strongest Man Krillin. Two DBZ characters that wear orange in the same shade of orange??? Yeah! It looks like the upcoming Yamcha will match, as well. This Goku and Krillin make an amazing pair on the shelf, and it feels great to have these two figures together and matching in their beefy adult forms.
  • I think these are the best face plates of any base form Goku, if not any Goku, period. There's something about the DBZ faces that become really hit or miss, which is sort of understandable: the source material is all over the place at times and hard to make 3d. Sometimes he looks too kid like, or soft around the nose/mouth. All of these read sharp and angular. The smirk face is incredible and captures that cocky look Goku gets when he's about to unleash on a villain.
  • A thumb up hand! Never knew how much I needed this.
  • Stand included.
  • Matte, except for inside the joints.

Nitpicks:

  • The hair isn't my favorite of the releases. It looks amazing in some perspectives, but straight on it doesn't quite scream "Goku" to me. Goku's hair is a challenge to make 3D for sure, but I prefer the other attempts, I think the big pieces might need to be a little bigger in comparison to the mid/small pieces. This is an adjustment I might make on my own.
  • The neck is thick, which is accurate to swoll Goku. But subsequently he's more menacing. One thing I think a lot of people, myself included, like about the character, is how quickly he can shift from goof ball to serious threat. It'll be hard to find a figure that could "do both", but in a perfect world I'd drop $ for one that could. In this case it would take bigger hair and a slightly thinner neck. I may try a neck swap from SSJ Goku just to see if it's possible at some point, and, if it is, I'll work on the fitting so I could swap them with ease.
  • I prefer the deeper V in the 1.0, but it's hard to do here with the diaphragm joint.
  • Not this figures fault, but I really wish there was standardized peg placement for all face plates. I would like to use the 1.0 neutral smiling face on this guy, as well as some of the Super faces, but the peg spacing is different.

At $50 shipped from aliexpress, you're looking at $15 more than a normal base Goku. I think it's worth it, with the only flag being this is a 3rd party figure so in theory it should be cheaper. That said you're getting a solid figure that is definitely unlike the rest of your Gokus. SHF will eventually put something like this out, but it might take a couple years, who knows. I am fascinated to see how theirs will compare, and, if it's better, I'll use this one as an orange body for Gohan. But since they might try to keep with the $35 price point, it could be worse.

I wish he had the kanjis on his chest and back. Easy skip without them. Cell/Boo look is my least favorite era of Goku.

GT Trunks is going up for pre-order March 15th

https://www.toyark.com/2024/03/14/dragon-ball-gt-s-h-figuarts-trunks-528386

Not sure how I feel about this one - on the one hand he's part of the main trio of Goku and Pan who I plan to get... but on the other hand I felt like Trunks was such a wasted character on the show...

That's true of every character on that show not named Goku. I'm skipping it, but you should get it if you like the design. It also comes with a tail for GT Goku if that matters to you. I wonder how that works. Did the GT Goku figure just have an empty port for a tail?

GT Trunks is an easy skip for me. Never cared for that look, or really any of the GT looks for that matter. I got SS4 Goku and Vegeta because SS4 is pretty wild looking and that's probably all I'll get from that series. As for the figure itself, it looks fine, but I do hate how they did the thigh twist on the shorts. They make them look huge and I feel like their photographer agreed because I didn't see just a straight-on shot of the figure in the tweets and such featuring him.

The Toyotarou edition of Ultra Instinct Goku popped up in my FedEx app so I guess I'll have that in a week or so. I skipped the first release of Ultra Instinct Goku so I'm looking forward to having this version, plus I want to check out the included book. I guess Dragon Ball is Toyotarou's baby now with the passing of Akira Toriyama. I hope Toriyama gave him his blessing to continue it when he's gone because it feels like Dragon Ball is one of those things that should just never end like Batman and Spider-Man.

The new Toyotarou Goku is great because it has actual shading unlike the first release, and the faces look a lot better. Plus, the included windswept hair is more unique than yet another charging kamehameha effect. The faces don't have any battle damage, however. This is a plus for me, as I plan to use the new head on the Super Hero Goku figure, which wouldn't look right if it was all scratched up.

I couldn't disagree more on Dragon Ball continuing without Toriyama. Unlike your examples of Batman, etc. Dragon Ball was all written and drawn by the man himself. From nearly the beginning, Batman, etc. had a whole group of different artists and writers working on it, each adding to the overall vision. But Dragon Ball was all Toriyama's singular vision. And we know what happens when others try their takes on the franchise: we get GT and Heroes and mostly forgettable filler movies.

I say, let the series end. Right now, Freeza is still out there as the looming future threat. Let's just keep it that way and we can fill in the blanks with our imagination.

All of those comic characters were someone’s singular vision until they weren’t. Or in the case of something like X-Men, they had little impact until a Claremont found them. I don’t think Dragon Ball is something that can’t exist without Toriyama. Toyotarou has been the main artist for awhile now and I think he deserves a shot at it. As long as that’s what Toriyama wanted. If he preferred Dragon Ball die with him then that’s his right, but I hope that’s not the case.

I'd pick this Trunks up if I could use his heads or heads/neck on the previous DBZ Trunks release, and the SS heads from that on this release. I oddly like this look, but I'd find more value to the set if he could supplement the other figure. I'm guessing, though, they'll be incompatible. Will wait for reviews.

Got Toyotarou Ultra Instinct Goku yesterday. He's a pretty nice figure, seems like a good update over the original (that I don't have). He lacks an effect part which sucks, but otherwise is nice. The books is pretty cool too. Nothing amazing, but it's fun to flip through. Would have been fun if they had a tease or two at the end or something. It also would have been nice if they had been able to get Toriyama to do an interview for it, but I wasn't expecting it.
