In the PIxel Dan walkthrough, Randy mentions that if support continues they want to do stuff like accessory packs and The Pack.
Of course, everyone deciding that all they wanted was the Manhattan Clan isn't really going to make that as possible as it could be.
I mean, I'm in for at least Fox. And I will pay whatever they want to charge me for relaxed wings, if they would consider that in an accessory pack.
If they made accessory packs with new heads and expressions I'd be open to that. I don't want to have to rebuy figures I already have just for new faces. As for The Pack, I'm limited on space so am selectively choosing who else from the line I buy or pass on. Other than Owen I don't really see anyone left as being necessary to my display. Perhaps Fox in human form given her relation to Xanatos. But while a giant robot, Dingo, Coyote, Wolf etc. would look cool, I wont be one of the folks buying them due to largely to space limitations.
The Pack is a tough sell because people will want assurances that the entire squad is released. Fox could be stand-alone out of her pack attire because of her connection to Xanatos, but who wants Jackal if they can’t get Hyena and so forth?
I want MacBeth as I think he’s a neat character and NECA’s version looks solid. Coldstone looks amazing so I’ll grab that one too, but then I may be done unless they do some accessory sets or something.
MacBeth will have cool weapons right?
Thwipp!
So watching Pixel Dan’s walk through with Randy, I don’t think the line is “dying” but what it’s future is up in the air.
and watching the Toy Shiz walk through with Stefan implies what’s out on display is “it”, that there’s nothing else planned, he’s allowed to comment on even if everyone gets wings or not.
As long as Macbeth and Coldstone actually make it out I’m VERY happy with this line. I’ve been waiting *this* Gargoyles line from *this* company for 20 years I could wish list forever who else I want but as long as I get the ones in that display, SOLID WIN.
the Gargoyles are impossible to customize because they need wings, tails, digitigrade feet… find the perfect recipe for Goliath?! Better make two motherfucker because Thailog! Now find a fucking robot figure the exact same size, scale and mass to make the Steel Clan! Hope it’s not expensive because you gonna need three! Now go find a beefy woman who looks good next to Goliath to make Demona! Have you ever noticed despite the pants size of most toy collectors there’s no good fat guy figures?! Have fun looking at every tubby wrestler figure wondering if they’re big enough! Oh by the way you need to find TWO DIFFERENT SIZED FAT GUYS because Hudson is slightly slimmer than his son… and Better learn to sculpt because while most of the heads you can fake it (a ToyBiz Gollum and Colossus with sculpted ridges worked great for Lex and Goliath!) good luck finding a Brooklyn head! (My sculpt looked almost as good as Djorde’s!… from the left side, straight on or on the right side it because VERY CLEAR I was NOT suited for symmetrical sculpting as his eye… just… melted) and seriously wings and tails, these are rarity in the action figure world, I think everyone bitching about the Gargoyles line proves why, they’re either incredibly shitty or they take up too much space… but if you’re customizing Gargoyles you better stockpile a bunch of them!!!
anyway, that’s all in the past! I have, on my shelf, most of the Manhattan Clan (Lex and Elisa are on pre-order still), I have three identical steal clan, a Thailog and Angela that didn’t require me to perfectly duplicate several exhaustive custom project… just out of the box perfect versions of characters from my favorite show.
I can live without the Pack, I can live without the Faye, I can live without the gangsters, the New Olympians, the background gargs, the whatever… anything we get next is a bonus lap and when it ends, so long as it’s not Oberon with no Titania or half a Pack is just gravy.
@doc-baghead I just watched both of those components of Pixel Dan and Toy Shiz and I think you may be reading into what's being said.
With PD, they state, and I paraphrase "as long as they continue to receive support we'll see where they go". Suggesting there's no current dip, but they require support to maintain the line. He even speaks about where he'd like the line to go if it has the legs of TMNT.
With TS it's a much more business-like response not advising what's coming next. They haven't completed all that's planned, but he wasn't able to talk about their plans - that's a pretty standard business response.
Honestly, there's nothing to indicate the decline of the line aside from currently unsubstantiated rumours.
Isn't that the head of one of the Hunters with MacBeth?? Is that just a throw in? I thought that figure would make it, but now it's not looking likely?
@ditko Macbeth wears a hunter’s mask briefly in his first appearance (whoops! He wears it in “City of Stone” not “Enter Macbeth”) to taunt Demona, it could be a scene specific accessory not necessarily a replacement for the other actual hunters.
Sigh... if this line ends my only regret is that they didn't give me display friendly "at rest" wings. I don't have space for all of the Gargoyles to have their wings spread as wide as possible. And the caped wings weren't it either... they are more space friendly, but not how I want my Gargoyles to look.
I want to display them together with their wings at rest and instead I just have to display them without their wings at all. For such a great line this was the one big failure for me. I wish they had charged like $5 more or whatever and included both wing iterations at once for optionality or something.
The figures are great - but the wing choice was a big miss for me.
If it is all but done I think the issue with it not going longer can be traced back to those damn wings and the pretty lengthy delays in getting figures out. Per NECA, the response to Goliath was among the best they ever had for a new line and to let that momentum kind of fizzle away feels like a missed opportunity. I never saw this line as one that would go super deep, but had it been really successful, there's not reason why it couldn't have.
I'm still very skeptical that it's going away anytime soon. There's enough new tooling already out there that NECA will want to try and make more off of them. I expect more releases like the Broadway variant and the Demona/Goliath two-pack to periodically refresh the property until they lose the license and the ability to solicit figures. I'm definitely not closing the door on the A-shape wings we pretty much all want, but if the line is essentially stopping with new sculpts then we're likely only to get such wings as inclusions with re-releases of the existing gargoyles, which isn't exactly a solution for us who have been collecting the line since the beginning, but I guess newcomers will be happy.
@ditko Macbeth wears a hunter’s mask briefly in his first appearance (whoops! He wears it in “City of Stone” not “Enter Macbeth”) to taunt Demona, it could be a scene specific accessory not necessarily a replacement for the other actual hunters.
Aye thank you. All these sculpts are beautiful, but I find the Macbeth, Coldstone and Hunters the most exciting designs. It's the 90s comic nut in me.
I watched the walkthrough and I think you guys need to RELAX. And go buy the new stuff. It's a well received line and they still are into it, but we need to buy it. I have bought a lot of Transformers in the last 5 years, but could see a shift. Especially since I want those Hunters, and they're on the Xanatos box. I hope it gets the support it needs.
I don't think anyone should panic or anything, but I do think we're likely to see a bit of a pullback with Gargoyles. If you go to a Target or a comic shop and look at the NECA section, it's a lot of stuff with shared tooling. TMNT is the exception there, not the rule, but that line is basically a unicorn and it's still one with some shared tooling, repaints, etc. Gargoyles required a lot of investment in new tools and I've been both surprised and impressed with how little is shared between the gargoyles. Angela and Demona share parts, the larger gargoyles share some hands, but not much else. NECA has to recoup of some that cost so we'll probably see some more variants and some tertiary characters like Gabriel that can make use of the tools already created. Gargoyles is also still a pretty new entrant into this market and NECA probably needs to see how the secondary characters sell before committing to more unique sculpts. There's always a lot of collectors who want the main cast and nothing else and I certainly see a lot of that sentiment shared in this space. They have a pretty nice array of characters available now or on the way, and yeah, if you want them to go deeper then you'll probably want to make sure that you're buying Gabriel, Xanatos, and maybe even the Broadway variant to help give the company an idea of how popular these characters are.
And if you're an optimist, NECA just made Gargoyles the centerpiece of its Toy Fair display. That's usually not what companies do with a line they think is over. And if Walmart doesn't want to stock them anymore - who cares? Every NECA section I see at a Walmart is terrible. There's a few horror ultimates and some old TMNT two-packs featuring non-turtles. It wouldn't surprise me if Walmart wants out of NECA all together since they barely invest in it anyway.
Again...just to reiterate for a third time:
I never said that I heard that the line was over, dead, done.
I repeat--had only heard that it wasn't doing as well as they had hoped, and that apparently, supposedly, Walmart wasn't planning on carrying the line.
I thought it was interesting enough information (that I received from someone in the know) to pass along for anyone who might be interested. Not cause a panic. The wording of the interviews was indeed interesting. Could be telling, could be just face value. I'm going to wait and see, personally. If it ended today, I'm happy with what we have, as huge a fan of the property as I am. Who would have thought we would have the full clan and main villains from Gargoyles in 2023?
Wasn't trying to cause a Chicken Little, sky is falling scenario. Promise.
That's why it's typically best not to share those sorts of rumors, even if it's from someone "in the know."
My Target was absolutely bloated today with a restock of figures, a ton of it being Gargoyles. Picked up Elisa and a Steel Clan. Saw Armored Xanatos and was sorely tempted there...that red is sexy. But Elisa is a wonderful figure. They did an excellent job on her. They did mention doing accessory packs at Toy Fair, so I assume they're listening to folks with the wings and they have something planned out there. Nonetheless, the line is pumping out a ton of goodies.
@detrimental-fig It's best not to share information because others misconstrue and take that and run with it? I mean, sorta sounds like a "you" problem, no?
