Hah, did they really boast it was their best selling line?
Went to go look it up, the exact quote was: “Day 3 of our downloads event features NECA’s bestselling Gargoyles line! This line keeps growing with no signs of stopping.”
So no claim it’s “their bestselling line” but did say it was *A* best selling line.
Also, and I’m probably just posting cope, I’m not too worried yet about Gargoyles… yet.
I keep a detailed list of everything I buy for the purposes of making my Top Ten Toys of the Year list and aside from Ninja Turtles (NECA’s real bestselling line with no signs of stopping) it’s been a slim year for them.
There were a few “new” products early in the year (Wolf Raph and Lagoona Leo, Lily Munster, Inferno Ghostface, I’d count the Vows set because there’s a lot of new pieces including completely reworking of Goliath’s head) but otherwise it’s been repaints or soft goods variants or straight re-releases for everything else.
I think NECA spread themselves a little too thin with Ninja Turtle’s 40th, a HaulAThon, a Cowabunga Collection, the Bloody Disgusting event a Walmart and needing to make sure Walmart also got exclusive movie-related and Last Ronin Turtles throughout the year, the Target Fall Geek Out, a winter event is also likely because there’s a lot of “coming in 2024” Turts we ain’t got yet, PLUS needing to get those new Leatherface toonies out for the 50th and products for a new Alien AND Beetlejuice movie…
every new line took a hit, Broadway got a coat, ALF and Earl dressed like cloth goods Superheroes (unfortunate tailoring proves why they call him the Mega-Low-saurus!) D&D got retro repaints, Toonies and Monster Turtles had filler B&W waves…
Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, and M3GAN all debuted at the same show as Macbeth and still aren’t out yet, two of them have limited window releases before a wider release which says to me “we could only make so many before we needed to use this machine to make more Michelangelos”
Next year there’s no Turtle anniversary or movie so hopefully we get some movement on other lines… or maybe those butt hurt AvP fans on Reddit are right and NECA only makes Ninja Turtles now and we got to learn to live with it… either way, just gotta wait and see.
You may be right. I don't always pay attention to what NECA is doing, but from far away it does seem like it's been a year heavy on variants and repaints. Even the turtle stuff wasn't in huge numbers until recently and there's still stuff from SDCC 2023 that has yet to see the light of day. I wonder if they had a backlog at a factory or maybe they're trying to ride out some rising costs they expect to come down.
A buddy of mine who lives in a very small Midwestern town randomly met Greg Guler today, lead designer of the Gargoyles cartoon. I guess he was visiting a relative who is my friend's boss. They talked about the show a bit and Guler told him that the NECA Goliath was exactly as he had intended it prior to streamlining the design for animation.
Cool tidbit.

Frank Paur has said similar on the Gargoyles podcast... that NECA understood what they had intended with the streamlined designs and how powerful the gargoyles are supposed to appear.
Djordje Djokovic recently showed off the sculpt he did for Gabriel. With NYCC going on and no Gargoyles stuff coming out of the NECA booth that I've seen, this I guess will have to do:

Seeing Gabriel’s sculpt is cool and all, and I could post cope all day about how it’s day one and what other lines aren’t shown (gonna be so fucking pissed if we only get three fucking Earls and Baby, Robbie would look awesome with the movie Turts)… but I’m kinda concerned about some of the comments Djorde’s making under Gabriel.
Not the ones where he doesn’t know when/if Gab and Macbeth and Coldstone are coming, he’s the sculptor, production logistics are Randy’s (or Trevor or Stefan, whoever gets ‘director’ credit on the bottom of the box) problem, once he’s handed it over that’s the end of his problems with it…
No, I’m concerned because when he gets a “I’d love to see you do more!” He responds with a “I would love to do more” not a, you know “wait to see what we got cookin’ 😉” or something.
Macbeth and Coldstone were revealed two years ago, even if they’re still coming it’s not a good sign there’s no figures in the hooper after them. “Oh maybe he’s being coy or can’t reveal more is coming, or maybe it’s Owen so Zelu only had to sculpt a new head or they got their D&D guy to do Oberon and Puck’s more fantasy designs next so they haven’t needed Djorde to sculpt anything new yet”, yeah lots of excuses could be made.. but it’s still weird Djorde would like to “do more” sculpts on “best selling line with no signs of stopping” that’s already two years behind.
but oh well, it’s day one! Let’s move the goal post that if we don’t get a new checklist at Christmas we worry!
Man.... just when I think I've put the Gargoyles line behind me for good you show me this sneak peak and... sigh. I'm still super grumpy they never gave me a reasonable displayable wing solution. At this point I wish they would offer a folded wing "apology pack" for all of the gargoyles released to date. I would buy it happily. Anyway, I do hope this Gabriel eventually sees release. I would pick him up for sure.
Well, fuck me!
Mondo just announced they’re doing 1:6 scale Gargoyles (and you thought the 1:10 wings took up too much space!)
No word if they’re He-Man/TCats/new TMNT realistic reimaginings or XMen/Batman/RGB animation accurate… but you sons of bitches, I’m in for at least Goliath and Demona!
Sixth scale Gargoyles? Are they insane?! As awesome as they'll probably look, there's no way I can fit a sixth scale gargoyle into my collection. I'll admire from afar.
@misfit Not to mention cost. I have their Man-Bat, and he was $250...the Gargoyles would easily be as big, if not bigger (in Broadway's case)...so $200 a pop for all the Gargoyles? Insane.
I'm not buying Mondo Gargoyles no matter how good they look, and I'm sure they will look good given Mondo's abilities and attention to detail. The fact remains that I swore off buying the BTAS line, cool as it looked, limited myself on what X-Men figures I'll buy, will be passes on the TMNT stuff even if it looks great, and will only be getting the He-Man himself and Real GhostBusters figures because I simply can't be rebuying the same lines 3-5 over for various differences between them. I'm already buying the RageToys noTMNT reimaginings and the fact remains I have to be an action figure collector and not a 12in doll collector due to money but also space. We all come across things we'll have to pass on and Mondo's being late to the party on a number of these licenses will be what keeps me out in addition to money and space.
I basically need Owen and MacBeth and Hudson's wings and then I can be done with Gargoyles. The ones I have look great, I'm not about to spend $200 per for "more cartoony" looks. Plus how obscure could the accessories they come with be that NECA didn't largely mine already.
I wish the line well, but this thing about farming out every license to multiple production houses I think will make a lot of people back off, kinda like how many people are buying the ThreeZero GI Joe doll/figures, the Super7 ones and the Classified Series all together?
I've already passed on getting into Neca's Dinosaurs as much as I'd like to because you simply can't buy everything and just live under an avalanche of plastic and cardboard. I often see a lot of these collector's rooms, and while they're impressive, I often wonder who's gonna be the unfortunate relative who has to pack up all that stuff and store it / sell it when that collector passes. And quite often some of these rooms are stacked to the rafters and it just looks like every flat surface is filled to make room for it all.
I never worry about what happens to my collection if I die. Most people die with a bunch of shit as is, it gets kept, donated, sold, or thrown out no matter what. That's for my kids to figure out, though when it comes to my records I'll be sure to impress upon them their worth so they don't just toss them or bring them to some reseller.
If Mondo were doing 1/12 Gargoyles like they're doing for He-Man and RGB I would have been in a real pickle. The 1/6 stuff though will be an easy pass. I have the X-Men so I know how awesome they are and how much space they take up, and none of them take up as much space as one gargoyle likely will. Part of me wants to dabble in their Spider-Man offerings, but I've stopped short there because it really is a matter of where the hell do I put all of this? And I still need probably half a dozen from the X-Men to feel "complete" so it's not like it's getting any easier. I wish them well though, just hoping NECA can get us Coldstone and MacBeth (hopefully with Hudson's wings) so I can feel content with that collection. Gabriel looks fine, but I don't need him. I would still like another avenue for getting wing options with Broadway as I have so far passed on his variant. Maybe if it can wind up on clearance somewhere I'd bite, but I just really don't want another Broadway.
I passed on Mondo’s Batman and X-Men because I knew *if* they got around to Gargoyles that’s what I’d want to use the limited amount of space I have left for… but even so, having a day to really mull this over, yeah, I think even then it’s just gonna be Goliath and Demona for me.
NECA hit these so far out if the park, I don’t see how my life is improved with BIG versions of the Gargoyles, as much as I love Gargoyles, they really fucked up making the main team eight enormous monsters… but then that’s why I love it, so what can you do?! If Mondo wants to do 1:12 as well I’d figure it out, do I really need two Mondo Geckos and two Wingnuts on my shelf?! I’ll find fucking room for a 1:12 toon line of Gargoyles, but 1:6… yeah just Goliath and Demona will do nicely.
My worst instincts is to also get a Steel Clan and put it in my NECA display, because it’s funny to me the idea Xanatos would have a 14 foot tall robot built for no reason, but we’ll see when I’m staring at a $350 price tag how funny I think it is then.
So I have a confession - I picked up the first ten figures in this line but had nowhere to display them, so I'm only taking them out of the package tonight. they really are beautiful figures but I don't know what to do with the wings for finding room to display stuff. Question - how easy or hard is it to swap the wings out of the sockets? I'm always afraid I'm going to snap something off at the peg if I swap things in or out often.
And has Hudson ever gotten folded wings? I feel like I missed something there.
Just finished unboxing those first ten and I'd cut myself off from the line because I wasn't DOING anything with them, but now I want to preorder Detective Broadway...
