Coming not soon enough after literal years of teasing:
Those are super cool, but I am all but done with collecting 1:18 figures. These look great though, depending on price I might go for one.
And it's LIVE. I'm in for the initial 4set, with an eye to get a shitload of Blanx in the BK to upgrade all the UniMax Darkthals I have from the old Dino Warriors line. Depending on how long the BK runs I could go All-In.
I'm not sure starting out with dwarves is a good idea. I have no use for the blank one.
I already have quite a few dwarves already from the LOTR line & will get 2 from Boss Fight
I'm more interested in the others on the drawing board.
So... I have all kinds of problems with this KS, even though I find it interesting and even potentially exciting when you look at the shot of all the stuff they want to do after this. Super cool. But like.. super cool like how all of us sit around wishlisting our perfect toy lines, not super cool in the 'I expect this to happen and be on my shelves in the next several years.'
Let's run through it.
1st Problem. Problem Numero Onesees. The entire background of who is involved here is just fucking weird.
The account creating the KS has created three Kickstarters thus far. One KS was for action figure blanks and the other was for what looks like gaming miniatures. One was 2016 and one was 2020. Both ended without even hitting 25% of their, fairly low, goals. It's a bad track record to have going into a campaign asking for 100k.
2nd Problem. Or problem 2 the number, as they say in the Frenchlands. There's WAY too much shit in this KS. The opening salvo is what.. 16 figures? Granted, some of them are color-swaps of each other. But I believe there's three unique body types in here (?) with a few parts shared. And if it reaches all the goals, there's extra figures, a new body type (or new parts to modify a type), and more accessories. More sculpting, more paint. You get the idea.
For a 'company' with no history of delivering finished product beyond, as far as I can tell, some articulated and kind of ugly blank bodies and a few dio miniature pieces on their website, that many items, at that level of detail, is a tall order. Like.. unrealistically tall.
3rd Problem. The Problem Tricycle, if you will. While the KS is like.. some dude, the risks section refers to the figures being made by a company: Go Native Toys. They have a website (referenced above for their ugly blank figure). It hasn't been updated (in terms of news items) since 2018. Despite having an active Kickstarter literally right now. Not even a mention. The company's first ever post on Instagram, as far as I can tell, is from 2023, gearing up for this KS.
Despite the claim that they've been operating and sculpting for other popular lines since 1990. That's weird.
Not saying it's a lie. But it's fucking weird if it's true.
And sculpting who-knows-what (they're certainly not interested in telling us what they've actually made on the KS or ON THEIR FUCKING WEBSITE) doesn't mean you're capable of delivering complete product. You don't necessarily find it easy to transfer your skills at being a spoke on the wheel to becoming the driver of the whole wagon.
The whole thing FEELS like vaporware. I want to be clear that I'm not suggesting this is absolutely a scam. What I am saying is that it looks suspicious at worst and overambitious at best. It has the skin-crawlies of someone promising you whatever you'd like because they know it won't be delivered, or because they DON'T know they can't possibly deliver it. And to be fair, that could be me just being overly cautious and distrustful.
4th Problem. Known in Ireland as Da Ssshhulneailnimlithremaclud; 26 dollars (36 Canadian) for a figure that's under 3 inches tall. I know they've got accessories, but that still feels like a crippling lack of value. I guess that's where the market is right now for toys - but I also think you're going to struggle to make people feel like they're getting their money's worth the smaller you go, even IF you can't possibly produce them for any cheaper. Other toy company insiders have talked about this problem already. It's part of why the 4H went to 6-7" for Mythic Legions despite the line, very obviously, being designed as 4".
And two things that I'll call hiccups more than problems. One being that the one design is basically a full rip-off of Elkhorn, and another is a full rip-off of the film-style Tolkien Dwarves, particularly some of the Games Workshop models. So like.. a little ew, right? Don't get me wrong - I want figures of both things. But it's still a TINY bit ew.
Also, I automatically think people are fucking losers when they insert 'z' into words instead of 's.' It's like 2002 edgy and I hate it, so you've gotta work like ten times harder to earn my trust if you're pulling the 'z' move.
Also also, it puts you in the illustrious company of Hell Screamerz, which is probably not where you want to live as an action figure KS creator.
All that being said - I absolutely fucking want some of those armored Dwarves and the king. Like.. pretty badly. So I really hope this is on the up-and-up because they look cool and I'd like to get some. But like.... I'd like to get them from BBTS, if I'm being honest.
Michael Norman looks to be the GoNative guy, and he's got a long history in the toy/collectibles industry from what I can see.
This one is going about as well as I expected. I say this without any accusations or pretensions on knowing what the creators are thinking; the lack of engagement from the creators really doesn't create an atmosphere of excitement and the 'we really care about this project' attitude you kind of want to see.
The last public comment on the KS was 11 days ago. When the project is sitting at a paltry sub-10k of an almost 100k goal. It feels, rightly or wrongly, like the creators already abandoned the project and therefore is not giving you any reason not to abandon it as well. There's some IG posts, but nothing of substance AND no engagement on the Kickstarter trying to drive people to go look at all the bigger pictures and turn-arounds and stuff posted on IG.
It's just such a fuckin' weird campaign from people that, I guarantee, most toy collectors have never heard of and therefore don't implicitly trust like they would a CFT, BFS, 4H, etc. In my opinion, they need to shut this down (and let it be their what.. third failed Kickstarter?) and maybe start over with one base body and a lower target, and just a better campaign overall. There's no way this thing makes up another 90k or so in 13 days.
Despite that the best designs in this campaign are BLATANTLY ripped off from better source material, I'd still totally like to grab a few. But even I'm super reticent to contribute to another KS from people I have never heard of, who aren't being backed by anyone like BBTS (I wouldn't have gone in for Brutal Realm if I couldn't do it through BBTS).
