I shot a packaged sample of Aragorn last year, I think the production piece came out pretty good. Haven't seen a Gandalf or Cave Troll in hand yet. Gimli is next, I believe.
Picked up the newest wave from Box Lunch last night. They had a few each of Sam and Saruman. Pleasantly surprised that they weren’t overpriced like most items are and were only $29.90 (the only other wave I’ve seen there was Frodo and Ringwraith for $32.90 each). They also had a 30% off coupon that I used plus a $5 reward on my account so it came to less than $37 for the set. Great price and great figures. My Saruman arm was definitely a bit tight on his left side but had no issues with breakage of any kind.
I was hoping Gandalf the White was going to drop for PO this month, still holding out hope that he and the next wave will release before years end.
Gandalf the White may not release this year, but we will likely offer Series 8 in late April, which means it SHOULD ship in 2024.
Hi msword. I was just wondering, with Gandalf the White possibly not coming this year, are we still getting the SDCC or Exclusive item this year that I've seen folks talk about?
Yes, there will be a SDCC exclusive, but it is not Gandalf the White. He will be released, but we are not in a rush, and have plenty of other figures in the pipeline.
I had the first two waves of these and sold them. I thought about going back and buying them again, but these just arent very good as much as I want them to be. I almost feel like the Toybiz figures are better. The head sculpts definitely are not, but overall, probably so.
In the latest AskDST they said they have up to wave 10 planned and will be planning more soon.
so based on educated guesses…
8. Eowyn/Witchking
9. the hobbit (Galadriel/Bilbo?)
10. Gandalf the White/????
does this also make LOTR the longest running line of action figures for DST outside of Marvel Select?
@arondir I think their Nightmare Before Christmas line is at 10 waves, soon to be 11 (not counting the "Best Of" re-releases), but it does seem like LOTR will surpass that pretty soon.
I like your guesses, and all seem like they're the next logical guesses, it just depends on what order. I'd also add Arwen & Elrond into the mix. Elrond has the crossover appeal of both Hobbit and LOTR, though I'd definitely prefer him in LOTR garb. Especially now that they seem to have more or less figured out the robed characters, I'd love a Rivendell Elrond, though I also wouldn't turn down a Prologue Elrond.
Seems like we are in a deep waiting period before the flood of LOTR coming later this year.
I wonder if WB is soliciting WOTR merch lines yet to show at summer cons.
Hey @msword, since the body tooling is already done for these guys, what are the chances of getting a Moria Orc and Uruk Hai Scout? Diamond Select prototyped the Moria shield, quiver, arrows, and unique hair head and the Uruk Scout would be 90% Lurtz, only requiring a new helmeted head. Can these be done?
Cave Troll packing shots up on DST’s Instagram.
Thanks for the heads up arondir. That thing looks really nice. I may have to get this. I don't do statues or stactions, I like my toys to move. But the idea of this big Troll with all these beautifully sculpted LotR figures surrounding it is pretty intriguing. I also feel like I want to support it in the hopes of other big LotR pieces.
Damn it DST. Are you really gonna make me buy statues. What have you done!
I like the cave troll fine, but I really super want a fell beast, so if getting the troll gets me that that’s what I will do.
I'd love any of the big bois- Fell Beast, Treebeard, Balrog, etc., but I can't even imagine what an in-scale version of any would cost, let alone how much room it would take up. I think if we ever get any of them, we'd have to be okay with them being severely undersized, and I think I would. I never had the super big Treebeard back in the day, just the regular wave release, and I still enjoyed him every bit as much. I only ever had some of the Armies of Middle Earth minis, and never any of the more specific scene packs, but I loved looking at the Balrog and Fell Beast ones online. A little mini diorama like that would be cool, but I think the Gallery figures are the next best thing. Undersized, sure, but still a fun, cool representation of the thing itself, while simultaneously saving money and space.
