who are they looking for?

TNI is reporting that Super 7 has cancelled the recently solicited DIC wave of GI Joe. I can't imagine anyone is surprised at that news.
Well they're based on the DIC cartoon which.......no GI Joe fan likes.
@justice it's a little surprising considering the wave is almost entirely reused tools. People must have really not wanted them.
I really thought their GI Joe line would have been one of their stronger performers but after this wave I'm really wondering if it's even going to continue. It felt like such a lazy offering from S7, it kind of deserved to fail.
Yeah... this was the pattern with Transformers as well, right? A few waves out of the gate, then a smaller wave of just repaints that underperforms and then...dead...
I feel like the Super7/Hasbro Ultimates partnership has probably run its course. Transformers was already over, Power Rangers had sputtered and died and now it looks like G.I. Joe may be giving up the ghost as well.
But fumbling the Disney partnership and the Hasbro partnership in quick succession seems like a pretty bad sign. On the other hand, those might have been their more costly licensing agreements, so maybe they have more breathing room with some of their other stuff.
I thought this was going to end up being one of their biggest lines but it sure doesn’t look that way with how waves 1 and 2 have been hanging around. I was really looking forward to possibly replacing my Lady Jaye’s head with a new one but I am not surprised by the cancellation of this way. I wonder if it will be the death of the line as well. With the three being pretty much reuses I figures it was to give them a larger tooling budget for the next wave.
It's no surprise given these figures are just repainted into versions from the DiC cartoon, which many don't even like or acknowledge. Lifelong Joe fan here who's never bothered watching the DiC show after trying out an episode or two.
I also wouldn't take this repaint wave as being a deathknell for the Joe line, as again, it's not indicative of overall appeal for the line. We'll see what Super7's next move is. I don't think the line needs to last much longer. I know I was only (semi)interested in a dozen or so characters, most of who they've already made or are releasing soon. I can't imagine the line having very long legs due to the high cost and lacklaster quality.
I think this was a wave shoehorned in because they needed a cost saving wave to be able to do a regular newly sculpted wave next.
If that's the case then this very well could be the end of the line for Super 7 GI Joe.
Just my opinion....
I think Super7's business model (specifically for Ultimates) is starting to show the cracks that were probably always there but managed to not show due to the brands they were selling.
Right now, from what I can see, their best selling Ultimates are lines that no one else is currently making (Thundercats, maybe Silverhawks), or lines that have fairly large fan bases that want specific offerings (cartoon looks, never done characters, etc.). So Thundercats, TMNT seem to be their bread and butter right now. I can't speak to Silverhawks per se because they are still only in for a couple of waves and it could go either way. GI Joe seems like it should have been a hit with the cartoon specific looks versus anything else out there right now.
Maybe it is just a combination of the DIC looks and an all female, repaint wave that hurt wave 6. Or maybe it is the business model of expensive, limited articulation, niche designs and characters that is not working. Especially in a shrinking market during a time of financial constraint from both collectors and the public at large. Let's not forget that Brian Flynn/Super7 recently got a cash infusion from private investors. That can be to help expand a business, but it is also an acknowledgement that the business is not as flush with cash (revenue) as hoped by the owners.
I saw a recent post claiming Brian is being constrained, or possibly sidelined, around a lot of final decisions about product by the new investors. The claim is that they want to see better returns (duh) and feel Brian's refusal to adjust product offerings to meet current market expectations (articulation, QC, etc) is hurting business. Again it is rumour posted on Reddit so I wouldn't put much stock into it, but it might be interesting to see how things play out in the coming months with Con season about to get into full gear.
Plus if the Joe brand for Ultimates goes by the wayside after Disney, Simpsons, Power Ranger and Transformers, then maybe there is something to the idea that things are changing.
Wish they could have gotten around to Shipwreck before their self sabotage.
It's interesting seeing people tie themselves in knots (here and elsewhere) to explain why Super7 cancelling yet another wave of Ultimates product is actually not really indicative of any larger problem and actually it's fine because yadda yadda this character yadda yadda repaints. Oh no, it's actually GOOD you see, because now S7 can get to the figures people actually wanted even faster, and they're definitely going to do that.
Definitely.
Just got the latest wave. Zartan is cool. Top torso wobbles to much for me, Face is spot on.
Baroness is pretty good. Way better than the blue one.
Gung ho is ok..
Stalker is garbage. The Toro stressed and cracked at the useless abcrunch. It don't crunch lol, well, it crunched alright. I'm not shitted out of 55 for this waste lol. Cherry picking here on out if I even continue. I don't think these do it for me like I thought they would.
Think I'm gonna be out of s7 completely.
