Just a note that this May 4th there will be a 9-film marathon (20 hours) in theaters. Starts at 8 PM on May 3rd it seems like, so the OT will start around 3 AM I guess. In case it wasn't going to be long enough, there will be a preview of The Acolyte.
I did the 7-film marathon which ended with the first showings of The Force Awakens. That had a few built-in gaps. I am tempted, but not too tempted, to do this one.
My thoughts on the whole Sith 'what do they want' thing is about as straight-forward as it gets; There is no actual answer because George Lucas never thought one up because he's not actually very good at any of this beyond a broad strokes kind of creativity. Period. We could speculate and make up our own reasons, but they will definitely just be ad hoc reasons, not something baked into the setting. That just doesn't exist. Sorry, fellas.
Part of this, imho; is rooted in how the Boomers Spielberg's a member of couldn't accept why America was fighting in Vietnam in the first place. There was never a good reason why America was over there so there was never a good reason why the Empire was evil.
Also Lucas but not a bad explanation.
D'oh! Got my directors borked. I am not always a smart person.
Well, there was a period where Lucas and Spielberg appeared to share a brain, so makes sense to confuse them. If you'd said Scorsese I'd be concerned.

Oh for sure. I think, generally, people struggle to define what kind of 'bad' is worth killing people over. Because the more you try to explain it, the more it ends up being 'I just don't agree with them.' And we sort of inherently recognize that as a shitty reason to kill people. Not shitty enough to NOT kill people, but shitty enough that you don't say it out loud in your fiction.
We see a lot in fiction where the more you try to explain the bad guy and why they are bad, the more you end up with a mix in your audience of people that do or don't think that character even qualifies as a villain. Or the villain becomes at least sympathetic -enough- that the heroes feel a lot less heroic. So you end up either going the trite path of 'genocidal maniac' or just not really explaining too much about your villain - which seems to be where Star Wars lands the majority of the time.
But I also stand by the absolute and incontrovertible fact that George Lucas is not a 'details' kind of creator and 100% did not ever even consider any of this stuff, or any deep motivations for any of his characters. The story as presented is as deep as the story was in his own brain. Good guy farm boy beats bad guy big evil government. Viva La Revolucion!
I don't think the OT really needed an explanation of the goals of the Emperor/Sith so don't have a problem with Lucas not going into detail there, any more than I needed a reason why Jaws is eating swimmers for instance. The Empire's motivation wasn't really the story, it was pretty clear they were bad and the dark side helped them be badder, so much of whybthat was the case didn't even become a question until RotJ introduced whether Luke could turn Vader.
But now that they have expanded to the PT and maybe pre-Palpy and the history of the Jedi and Sith, I'd like to hear a little more as to what the goal of the Sith really is and how the Force plays into it - Misguided belief that people are better controlled? Power, wealth? Just Evil and wanting to make people miserable? The Dark Side is like a Devil and corrupts people?
Doesn't really matter, but as they decided to tell us more about it, these questions come up, and I think the storytelling would be stronger if there was more of the Sith and Jedi goals.
Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled for May 22, 2026
I wouldn't say Lucas isn't good for details. He put loads of detail into Star Wars. What he didn't do is provide any depth, and a lot of times I think that was a strength.
All the little world building elements like gas mining and clone wars got just enough mention to fire up the imagination and make the galaxy feel lived in.
Tim Burton's Ed Wood is how I always picture Lucas on set. But, you know, with talent.
Heh, I'm in a similar boat. I hope for another Boba season just so I can forget what they did a little easier, but I still have yet to finish Mandalorian season 3. I even want figures from the finale but haven't gotten there yet.
I have yet to make time for Tales of the Empire, but I'm more and more hyped for Acolyte. I don't expect the greatest Star Wars ever, but looks like it may be a fun thriller.
Apparently, one of Lucas's favorite Disney Star Wars projects is Obi-Wan Kenobi.
