Liking the show, mostly, I wonder if each member of the coven getting their trial is going to feel like the story is being stretched - as so far both have been more about Agatha (her cheating the first time, her lack or feeling about Sharon, she even taking the lead vocals) in some ways. Still not sure why we would be rooting for Agatha to get her magic back. Unlike Loki, who had his good moments here and there before his redemption arc in his show, we really haven't seen much to make Agatha fully sympathetic. They have the seeds with her son, but we'll see.

Anyway

Spoiler thoughts

Rio being Death was strongly hinted at here - she'd take the bodies after Agatha takes the witches power, and when Agatha yelled "Don't" when Teen was in bad shape, basically saying "Don't take him".

I assume that Agatha made a literal deal with the devil to get the Darkhold, and Rio was the one to take Nicholas. The question is whether Rio manipulated Agatha to want the Darkhold that badly, or did Agatha not know who she really was at that point - did Rio betray her or is Agatha deflecting...

I was disappointed about Sharon last week but the contrast in Agatha's reaction to her and then to the Teen being injured was pretty good. When he asked about her son, you could tell she probably had recognition that the spell might have blocked that question if he really was Nicholas, so she walked away a bit less caring, and then Rio confirming it - we will see how she treats him going forward.

I wouldn't have thought so. One trial per witch was my expectation from the start.

This episode, however, didn't seem to be much of a challenge for anybody, so that could get old if it continues.

I disagree it was a challenge for Alice as much as the previous one was for Jen. Both had to get over their fear.

I'm really looking forward to how Wiccan progresses and his ultimate reveal to Agatha.

I think perhaps he is on the road to bring back Wanda & if Agatha will aid him in the end

I don't think Mrs Hart will stay dead

Maybe what's standing out to me is that it was only a challenge for Alice.

Spoiler
With the potion challenge, each person had to do some level of adapting, figuring out what modern items had the ancient property they were looking for. It was like an escape room where they were all haunted by their pasts.

For the rock opera, everybody just found an instrument they could play and it came down to Alice just kind of playing...harder?

They didn't even really have to overcome any inter-witch strife to make it work like the potion's "all of one mind" bit. Like, maybe have to work to get Jennifer to leave the protection circle, or a disagreement about who the front man is, or something.

I'm not trying to talk you out of liking the episode; I've also really been enjoying the series so far. This one just landed really flat for me, is all.

This is a quick thought and I reserve the right to change my opinion later, but I wouldn't trade any of the screentime of the characters just *talking* at the end of the episode for any additional/artificial challenges in that portion. Or Lillia's "zils!"

Characters just finally talked and got to know one another for the first time in how many franchises? It was wonderful.

@ru1977 Time to start binge watching....

Spoiler
Agatha Episode 5

Welp, after my concern that they would be stretching things out with everyone getting a trial per episode - and Agatha's being last - before things picked up, they certainly surprised me with what I thought was a great episode. Genuinely unexpected events at the end of this one. Loved the Salem 7, the whole Evil Dead vibe, Rio's Wicked Witch of the West cackle, the reminder that Agatha is not the good guy, and Wiccan...I will also note that Rio was still inside at the end - so can presumably save the others, but likely had to deal with Alice first...

Lots of questions, how much does Wiccan know, how much did Agatha know, what does Rio want...

My wife and kids saw a trailer and wanted to include Agatha as part of our October viewings, so I did watch the first two now but it's a bite in the ass getting all five of us in a room together outside of the weekend, heh.

Episode 5 was the best of Agatha so far imo. I was so confused at the end, but in a good way. Also Aubrey Plaza's witch laugh just became one of my favorite line deliveries in the MCU.

I wouldn't have minded an extra 15 minutes of show. For an episode that had so much happen, it was super-short. Like, you barely have time to think "oh, this is happening" before they moved on to something else. But like fac said, so many surprises.

On the other hand, I was really kind of underwhelmed by the Salem Seven. I wasn't expecting a straight adaptation of the comics versions, but was at least hoping for some nods to them. Something more creative than "oh crap, it's an owl."

The big question, though, is had anybody picked up a pattern on the setting for each challenge? From the trailer, I thought it'd be a tour of different horror genres (mirroring WandaVision's sitcom tour), but that's not the case. Last week's 70's recording studio was clearly a sore spot for Alice. Maybe the nice home in Jen's trial represented her customers she'd been shilling? She didn't seem to react to it one way or another. And why an 80s sleep-over?

Does it make sense? Is it supposed to?

If anyone didn't see Aubrey Plaza's performance in "Legion" - she deserved a Supporting Actor nomination. They had her do some crazy shit and she rocked all of it, and there's one dance sequence I'll never forget because she was so creepily evil.

Also I'll spoil this theory just in case but it's been bugging me from the start:

Spoiler
theory
What if Teen is actually the dead body? We never saw the face and he is dressed very similarly to the body. Not exactly, but close. Yes, we're supposed to think it represents Wanda and it probably is. Just... a thought I've had.

Ep 5 has been my least favorite so far. The Stranger Things of it all was fun but lacked the overall good vibes of the last couple - I guess it felt rushed and a bit muddled. Though, again, Aubrey Plaza's line of "hun, you okay?" to a possessed Agatha was hilarious. Forgot about that from the trailer.

Also, was Agatha's eyeliner in the wrong place in the last scene on purpose? Her right eye make-up was well below her actual eye.

I thought it being short was in its favor, as I tend to notice the runtime when I launch an episode, so wasn't expecting much to happen...I think a show sometimes needs that "what is happening" pace if the characters are also supposed to be in the "what is happening" space as well.

I haven't figured out a pattern with the locations. The first two sort of matched the aesthetic of the witch on trial in that Jen seems like the modern/elegant type and Alice the hippie/rocker type. This one was most obvious horror setting to me, seeming like an 80's/90's "kids in some remote location play a supernatural game and it goes wrong" film.

I do like the ambiguity of whether Agatha can or cannot control her absorption powers and can drain witches without trying - if she can't control it and young Nicholas Scratch hit her with some magic...???

Also, it seems like some of Lilia's random comments in earlier episodes may have been her knowing this is coming, sort of.... (Apparently, she said something along the lines of "Alice don't" and "Save Agatha" randomly before and in this one she mentioned how it was worse than the first time...)

Pretty sure if April Ludgate heard you say "totes" she would start planning your demise, as she did with Tynnyfer. (Parks and Rec Season 6 Doppelgängers). 😋

OK, I changed my mind, this was the best episode of Agatha so far. Joe Locke was really perfect casting.

It was a great episode, and a smart choice to build a foundation with Billy, if they are indeed going forward with the Children's Crusade storyline and him appearing Young Avengers.
