@fletch awesome. Dark World was when I first realized Thor could be the next Masters of the Universe, as far as a powerful hero with cool friends fighting a variety of monster villains across crazy locations etc. But yeah, space Vikings vs laser elves was right up my alley.

In 1 weekend Deadpool & Wolverine made as much as The Marvels did in it's entire theatrical run. If Marvel makes the movies we want, we will show up.

Sue is the kind/reasonable big sister who sighs at the shenanigans, while Reed is the introvert/in his own head/science stereotype but not a nerd/geek as he does have gravitas/leadership. We'll see. Kirby also doesn't give me the "girl next door" vibe that I think Sue needs - Sue would be the homecoming queen/Miss America but not a mean girl - and she would be the valedictorian as well.

Jack Kirby said he modelled Sue on Grace Kelly so there is a limit to her "girl next doorishness". Sue is also meant to be a bombshell, fashion icon, etc.  That gets a little deemphasized once they are married (probably a tad sexist to be honest). Vanessa Kirby is a brilliant actor. She lights "The Crown" on fire in every scene she is in. No worries about her performance.

Based on the description of the footage in the trailer I think they may be doing a version of the Reed / Sue dynamic that is present on some runs of the FF. Mainly that Reed has all these big ideas but struggles to communicate to the world at large. That is where Sue is able to give his ingenuity and science a public face in a way he never could. Who knows what approach they will take.

This appears to be starting with them not married. Her name tag clearly reads S. Storm not Richards. Reed appears on a bachelor game show. Why would they just skip that story beat anyway? No way I would. You keep  the characters' main story beats to show yourself.

Thor 2 if far from a good movie but I like it better than Thor 1. At least it isn't embarrassed to be a Thor movie for the vast majority of its run. Had they given Malekith a personality it would be much better regarded. He isn't hard to write; he's the Joker as a magical space elf.  People forget Phase 1 and 2 of Marvel were as spotty as phases 4 and 5. Just people's expectations were lower.

@derrabbi I think that was Ben on the game show, but it was after he becomes the Thing.

@ru1977 I may be wrong. Looks like all their silhouettes though. Either way Sue and Reed don't seem to be married yet.

I agree it seems like they aren't married yet, but I wonder how much time the movie will cover since the director etc are already talking about Franklin. I also wonder how much of the trailer is actual footage we'll see in the movie because I got the sense at least some is more proof of concept.

I think Grace Kelly started out as the "girl next door" type who became the icon, sort of how Diana was a schoolteacher before she became a princess. Not someone trying to be an icon/bombshell/be noticed the way say a Liz Taylor or Marilyn Monroe leaned into it. I think of the reaction for when they made Sue's outfit more "sexy" in the early 90's, it didn't work for her character even if she could, for lack of a better term, pull it off. She should be the fashion icon/bombshell/glamour but not really be aware of it, compared to say the Wasp or Mary Jane.

Of all the main women in the Marvel Universe, Sue is the one I think is most likely to sit outside the supermarket helping sell Girl Scout cookies with the neighborhood Mom's and daughters - down-to-earth is the term I would use - even though she could be the cover model and brilliant scientist in her own right.

Not sure we really are disagreeing here, by the way.

That's fine, I am likely wrong, I haven't watched The Crown.

Yes, and I think that helped get across that she was also pretty smart as she could figure out Reed's stuff well enough to explain it to her fellow down-to-earth types...

Reed appears on a bachelor game show.

I think that was going to be The Thing on the show. Leading to I am sure the woman who picks him is terrified/repulsed by his appearance. I hope that does not make the film to be honest, I prefer it that Ben thinks more people are "repulsed/afraid" than they really are - because then it is something for him to accept.

@ru1977 I heard one theory that Franklin is narrating the film. Could a time projected Franklin be the Beyonder / power source of all these Secret Wars incursions?

@fac Yeah; i think your basic analysis of Sue is correct. Still Grace Kelly and those cheekbones. I mean one reason Sue is seen as someone who would sell cookies with her children she is one of the few Marvel heroines allowed to really have small children. Sure I'm missing some. Wanda's children were demon thought constructs. Jessica Drew has a son but her storyline is particularly that of a single mom and not a nuclear family.

I wanted The Marvels! I just wanted it to be good.

Still, I very much enjoy chunks of the film - a lot like The Dark World, actually. The basic premise works and the casting works outside of Dar-Benn - it's just the parts never rise to anything greater. The script was muddled from "go" and endless reshoots never could fix the basic storytelling problems of how much time has gone by in-universe, Skrulls, involving Nick and, most importantly, who is Carol Danvers, to herself and those around her? Just to those in her immediate vicinity in this film, she's the Annihilator, she's Captain Marvel, she's Air Force/soldier, she's a Princess, possibly a girlfriend and she's Aunt Carol - and she still remains ill-defined.

I also wanted Marvels, and did enjoy most of the film. It definitely felt like, for once, it was too short. Felt like it was missing a couple scenes, particularly character stuff with Carol and Monica.

I like the Marvels well enough. It was bottom mid level MCU; which places it above the vast majority of mainstream genre type special effects films if not all that high on the MCU scale of things. The Carol / Monica relationship deserved a few more minutes of screen time. I think the film would have been helped if Ms Marvel had been just a 1 hour back to school special thing and not sent her off in time travel / another dimension, etc. Kamala should have remained a "friendly neighborhood" Jersey City superhero in her show. Not only is there overkill on "other dimension" storylines in Marvel atm it blunts her should be reactions to all of a sudden being a Jersey teenage girl in her bedroom being teleported out into freaking outer space. It's also time to write Nick Fury out of these movies. He clearly is phoning it in at this point. They've written themselves into a little too much of a corner with Carol being as powerful as she is but that's a CM1 and Endgame problem as much as anything.

ha @ru1977 Was just writing the same point about Carol / Monica
