But why can't he be THE Doom? It's a movie.

Because he's already THE Iron Man.  I'm not saying it's just a gimmick because I don't know what the story is, but I can't believe it's not *because* he's Tony Stark.

If he just showed up as Dr. Doom with no acknowledgment that he either used to be Stark or at least looks like "our" universe's Stark, then what was even the point?

@yojoebro82 honestly, I think that's the right attitude. Do I think they can do no wrong? Absolutely not. Is this a definite fail? No again. It's a big swing, to play off schizm's sports ball metaphors. And I'm actually sure whether or not the movie is great, it will make bank. How great it is though, will determine Secret Wars' profit.

I imagine we will get at least one moment like that, maybe with Spiderman. But I dunno, I'm thinking about the mirror universe episodes of deep space nine where people run into someone who looks just like something they trust but this person is terrible and nothing like who they're expecting.

Casting was always the MCU's homerun and though Phase 4 really challenged them and FF needs to prove itself - the group on stage had very little chemistry and all the promising of "family" is more an educated wish than apparent, no matter how infectious Pedro's charisma can be

I struggle a bit with Pedro as Reed because Reed really isn't a charisma guy to me. Johnny is the frat boy/charisma guy (Evans got this), Ben is a "grew up on the streets" NYC guy, Sue is the kind/reasonable big sister who sighs at the shenanigans, while Reed is the introvert/in his own head/science stereotype but not a nerd/geek as he does have gravitas/leadership. We'll see. Kirby also doesn't give me the "girl next door" vibe that I think Sue needs - Sue would be the homecoming queen/Miss America but not a mean girl - and she would be the valedictorian as well.

Also, I won't miss Kang at all. I thought Majors was terrible with his sweaty, pouty expression for every weird line delivery. He and Kathryn Newton were the first big swings and a miss to me, so never having to watch him eat scenery and get praised for it again is Fantastic.

I liked him as He Who Remains in Loki. Quantumania was a misfire for me in so many ways - Thor Dark World level of pointless - so not sure that version of Kang or Newton as Cassie should be measured by it.

Yeah, seems like it has to be a plot point. If it is just going to be Downey in the mask the whole film and doing the voice, not sure why you announce it now. Unless they were worried that rumors of Downey being on the FF set (or another MCU production set) would inspire Iron Man is coming back rumors and they felt they needed to nip that before it got out of hand.

@fac, that'd be hilarious if this is just a smoke screen to hide Iron Man coming back.

"Those markers are just going to be where we CG on his Doom suit..."

Not for nothing, the first Avengers movie is on FX right now, playing in the background at work. I'm reminded how fun that movie was from beginning to end. At some point I became burdened with my own hopes and expectations, but back then I was just excited to see everybody teaming up. Well, fighting each other and then teaming up, but that's technically better.

You announce it now to set Comic-Con on fire.

The negative MCU tide has turned with the one two punch of Deadpool & Wolverine and then this announcement. And to control any such rumors.

I think Vanessa Kirby is very talented - she's very funny in About Time, which itself is a beautiful movie - so I don't mind her. But Pedro definitely feels wrong for this role. As does Quinn - he was very stiff up on that stage (which - fair - that experience could indeed be terrifying).

Honestly, in interviews Pedro comes across as not a charisma guy either. It's why I feel he's a terrific actor/a good choice for the role. He's fun and he isn't self-conscious, but he's also a dork.

What?! No. No no no, no. No. No! First off, I recognize I enjoyed Dark World more than most, but still! Dark World is something I've voluntarily rewatched more than once. Come on! It was written by your beloved Markus and McFeely! It's not a strong film, but it's nothing close to the blurred sludge and pained performances in Quantumania.

Plus - Mew Mew!

Funnier than almost any line in Quantumania.

TDW doesn't rise to be greater than it's parts - but those parts are still entertaining. Selvig and his pants, Darcy in general, Thor/Loki is interesting, Frigga, Jane is mostly good - it's just the movie never really comes together, and poor Chris Eccleston needed some personality. Add in the fact they fired the director and producers cobbled together the final film - it's pretty remarkable how watchable it still is.

Quantumania is just boring throughout. CASSIE! DAD! CASSIE! DAD! F---.

Sight unseen, I think I would rather have had them recast Kang and continue all the timey-wimey variant business they've been setting up.  I agree that Doom is a better villain than Kang, but I don't agree that he's a better villain for this story than Kang.

I'm also not stoked for RDJ as Doom. It can't be THE Doom, so it just feels like a stunt while we tread water waiting for the real one.

Everything here sounds 100% like the conversation I had with my ex this morning.  I'm not happy about this return for Downey at all from what it appears.  They are going to have to pull some pretty wild twists and turns to get me in on this.

I've said this before... but not having Luis in the movie was the biggest ball drop in the movie. Having him inadvertently defeat the telepath character?! Come on. COME ON!?!?!

What's funny, to me, about Downey as Doom is there was a whole thing on the internet after Endgame to bring Downey back as Kang, playing off his comments about time messing back when he helps Cap to his feet after Thanos bombs them before the end battle. That the heroes would go through a whole thing, presumably incursions and secret wars and all that, only to find out the time traveling megalomaniac behind it all was... a Tony variant, now as 'Kang'.

@schizm I probably haven't seen Kirby in enough roles, but she comes across as a little too sophisticated/elite for Sue, if that makes sense.

@ru1977 Maybe not the best comparison, I didn't dislike Dark World as much as it seemed like they needed a movie to introduce another Infinity Stone and didn't fully work out a plot beyond that, so let's figure out how to make it about Thor, and it showed a bit. Kind of how Quantumania seemed like they wanted a Kang film and Ant-Man was next up, so... But a case could be made that I liked Quantumania the least of the MCU films, in that it had almost no ambition.

I'll go a step farther and say Dark World is my favorite Thor movie.

It was Thor at his absolute peak,  Loki being the most Loki, and solidified the Asgardians as space vikings (vs laser elves). It's really pretty awesome.

They needed to do way more with Malekith (still not exactly sure what his plan was) and Jane was little more then a maguffin, but those don't keep it from being the best Thor.

@fac fair. Quantumania is by far the marvel movie I enjoyed the least. It's the first one I knew I wouldn't rewatch. Love and Thunder I feel like I will give another shot eventually but Quantumania? Nah.
