@akatsuki I agree, I'd probably have Kang variants be played by different actors at this point, maybe not recast as much as each time he shows up he looks different, like we had with the Peter Parkers and will likely have with the X-Men.

I will be curious if the multiverse option might tempt them to bring in a new Tony Stark.

I will be very surprised if it DOESN'T lead to a new Tony Stark.

And yeah, the multiple actor thing seems like the best option. Hell, have Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell play Kang all in the same movie. * Yes, the credit scene for a movie a lot of people apparently didn't watch established all Kangs look like Majors, but whatever. Time to move on.

*This is more a Dr. Parnassus joke that about an ethnicity change.

I agree with recasting Kang as his story wasn't finished and was impacted by real-world events (re: Majors being a scumbag). I'd be disappointed to see Tony come back, as they wrapped his story up neatly. Immediately post-Endgame I was wary that they'd use multiverse shenanigans to reverse his sacrifice and it would feel cheap, and now I REALLY feel that way. Bringing him back when the films are struggling feels like the kind of thing that would get mandated by panicky execs.

I do get the desire to see the character continue on screen. If they want to bring Tony/Steve/Natasha back, honestly? Just reboot the entire MCU. I don't want side-universe Tony operating in the same MCU that OG RDJ Tony did - just reset the whole thing and start from a new beginning. Maybe that's where they're headed already, I dunno.

@h-bird I get all that. I would be cool with Evans, Johanson, and Downey coming back for multiverse shenanigans for Secret Wars, then that's it. Borrow them all from just before the time heist, or in the middle of it (like right before Tony tells Steve time messes back, for instance), then have everyone go back to their fate and move on.

But I do expect the MCU to be rebooted after Secret Wars with a new paradigm. New Tony, new Steve, probably with younger actors. And maybe some of them will even get embraced by the audience, and maybe the studio will knock out some more blockbusters in the next six years.

Yeah, "OK" is the way to put it. Remembering how I felt about the first season, I'd put the Nebula one closer to the top in quality as I enjoyed it quite a bit. I watched the first season only once but I remember getting kinda bored with the concept of the show after a few episodes then liking it more again during the last few. It was entertaining though, even if it felt pretty unoriginal as far as noir mysteries go.

Yeah, that's why I called it OK, at the start I was annoyed at Nebula as Deckard from Blade Runner complete with the flying cars, but it became so cliched it looped back on itself for being so brazen about appropriating some noir tropes that I just gave in.

So enjoyed Episode 2 a lot more...

I am fascinated how they have gotten so many of the actors to do their characters voices. It is pretty surprising to me really. We keep talking about missing some of the old guard in the MCU, I feel like they are missing out in not doing an in continuity series with this animation style for the core Avengers. Given what they are spending on What If, what if (see what I did there) they revisited the time between the start of the Avengers initiative and Endgame - sort of how Clone Wars filled in between AotC and RotS in Star Wars.

Spoiler
What If... S2 E2

This was a fun one, although I would hope that Hope (see what I did there again) would be smarter than that. The one good thing about What If is that you never know if you will get a happy or sad ending, so to some extent there is a little extra interest in watching it play out. I liked that about the comics as well.

I noted above about the voice actors, but one thing this episode did was really make me want to see in continuity "Tales of SHIELD" set in the 60s, 70s and 80s with Peggy, Howard, maybe Dum Dum et al, Hank, Janet, Bill Foster, Elijah Bradley, T'Chaka. Ground it to Earth, no Thor, no aliens, but have the Black Widow program, the Winter Soldier program, Hydra, the Ten Rings, etc., be the antagonists. Maybe have the guts to have Steve Rogers helping out as the mysterious ally they get when needed (since I don't care what anyone says, Steve got old with Peggy in our timeline, so they both got the happy ending...), a la Racer X from Speed Racer... This would be the another great use of the animation.

Also, give me "What if the Avengers learned Coulson was alive?"

@fac The comics seemed, from what I remember, to always been downers. This one thing is different, then thirty pages later everyone is dead.

But yeah, I would really love a series that filled in times between films like that. The only reason I wouldn't want an animated series like that is because they'd do figures based on the animated style and I would really love to have realistic versions of such characters. (I'm thinking, specifically, how the 5 year span after Thanos snapped being a great time for a Dark Avengers team to rise up, and I would be so upset if those figures were done in a cartoon style.)

And I DEFINITELY think Steve got old with her in our timeline, and have proposed a secret Avengers team in the early 80s or so before. Peggy, Steve as the 'fourth' Captain America, but no one knows he's really the original, T'Chaka, and all the others you already named, along with some heroes people didn't realize were active back then. And I'd go for people we may not get any other way, like Moondragon or Hellcat, or even the 'original' Black Knight who is Dane's uncle or whatever mentioned in Eternals. Have Mar-Vell/Wendy Lawson there. Pick up some threads from the Peggy Carter show too.

For the record, I hadn't watched yet when I posted that. Now I see some of my ideas are redundant heh.

What If Episode 3 -

Another really fun one. Unlike many of the What Ifs, this one might be pretty rewatchable. I will be curious if we get more rifts on classic films, as we have had two so far this season.

Not really spoilers, but look for "Science Bros" and "15% 25% Off Hawkeye" and "Velvet / Organza / Spandex / Leather". Not gonna lie, might be willing to get some of the alternate looks from this one in toy form.

Question -

When people design robots, is there a universal design principle that the eyes must be able to turn red when bad?

Yeah that was another good one. I appreciate when What If shows us things we can't see otherwise.

On the 4th day of Christmas, What If..? gave to me - the holdover episode from last year that introduced Gamora.

Not sure why it was held back, I am curious if the animation for the chariot race took longer to complete than expected. I kind of wish they had called this a bonus episode and included it retroactively as part of Season 1.

This was an OK episode, similar to a lot of the first season that it was riffing on very specific events from the Infinity Saga. The voice actor for Tony does a pretty good job, but he is at 11 on the Downey scale too often maybe, he to be a bit more conversational and less Tony "playing Tony" in some scenes (which I felt was how Downey would portray Tony in group scenes, sort of the public facade of Tony being Tony dialed up).

On the 5th day of Christmas, What If..? gave to me - what I suspect was meant to be the season premiere episode for Season 2. (Given the Watcher is repairing the hole where Ultron broke through last season)

Always like to see more of Peggy and Steve as I feel their story brought much needed heart and true emotion to the MCU. And Capt. Carter is a great addition to the MCU lore and I hope she makes another live action appearance at some point. Having her be the "star" of What If..? is a nice touch.

So I enjoyed this one quite a bit...

That's funny, I feel the exact same way about how Downey played Tony, and this voice actor. But you can tell, for instance, how intimidated Tony is by Thor after their fight by his behavior. Tony's final piece of armor is always his quips.

Also now that you mention it, that was what bothered me about this episode too, that is felt more season one even though this show shouldn't technically matter as far as episode order. Definitely a fun episode but managed to feel out of place for me. My son and I watched the begining of the season one finale after though to see where Tony and Gamora ended up there.
