The only word I can think of for the Loki finale is artistic.
SpoilerSpoilerLoki becoming the new, I dunno, nexus and power source of the multiverse, and the new multiversal shape looking like Yggdrasil, was the perfect way to cap off a great series. Twists, turns, unexpected developments and overall a concise way to honor the character and who he was from the beginning. The throne he was destined for!
I view it as Loki ...
Loki the god of mischief, the god of lies; enchants all the time lines, pulls them into himself and becomes the weaver of fates, god of story, teller of lies. It was very much in tune with the norse myths. Finally on his throne; though out of sacrifice this time and not out of dominance.
Who better to sit on the throne than Loki the Loser?
Sounds like I really need to watch Loki season 2. I’m behind.
Another thing about Marvels. I absolutely loved seeing
But then reflecting on that, man, that alone would have made a great movie—seeing Carol attack Hala. And how come we don’t get to see any Kree Sentry robots?
And thinking about it even more, it makes me sad that we didn’t get a movie version of the Avengers—Operation Galactic Storm with the two teams led by Iron Man and Cap fighting the Kree. And Tony’s and Cap’s different opinions about how to handle the Supreme Intelligence would have been good setup for their differences in Civil War.
Just more thoughts about how I think the MCU has been too quick to retire characters. Plenty of additional amazing stories that could be told.
Yeah, I get why they're going the way they are since movies obviously take considerably more time to produce than comic issues, or even animated episodes. But I agree there are plenty of stories that could have been told with the Avengers team. If absolutely nothing else, there's a five year gap in Endgame just waiting to be explored. Tony seems like he was off the board the entire time, but Steve, Natasha, Rhodey, Rocket, Nebula, Carol (sometimes), and you could always introduce some new characters that are offworld during the time heist or who knows what.
And all roads lead to Dark Reign in my head, but come on. Half the population is gone, most of the traditional Avengers aren't avenging. It's a perfect time for someone like Norman Osborn to rise up and make his own team, resorting to psychopaths and villains dressed as heroes. I know we're technically getting Thunderbolts, but I want something closer to Dark Reign and that five year gap would be a great time to tell that story. I also don't see why Tony and Thor stepping in for it couldn't be done without full interrupting their retirement for real. They'd be reluctant and still go back to not being heroes until the time heist, but if you can accept the Black Widow movie fitting in then why not this?
I know it'll never happen though.
@ru1977 Yes, I totally agree. Dark Reign would be amazing to see. And the Blip would have been a great time to do it. I would love to see Willem Dafoe as Osborn leading the Dark Avengers!
It also would have been a good time for Baron Zemo to start up the original Thunderbolts like in the comics. Except we never got the Masters of Evil in a movie to set that up. More lost opportunities.
@akatsuki I'd rather they retire characters than recast. Knowing both Downey and Evans were ready to move on resulted in them actually giving them a good arc and send off. I know people want to see more of their favorite characters, but I think this was the better move.
Would have been a very bold move to try to set films during the blip, I think it might have been too depressing, too big to really capture the mood of. I think there would be some great stories to tell, but not sure it wouldn't be too heavy for the MCU.
I was thinking that the very fear Disney must have had that folks would stop after Endgame led them to announce the Avenger films so far out. It has, I think, come back to haunt them, as it would be better if we only knew about films and shows maybe 18 months in advance, less speculation as to where everything was leading and how it fit in...and we all end up wondering why do this and not that...
@fac Strongly disagree. What if they killed off your favorite characters? Would they ever permanently kill off Spider-Man, Wolverine, or Batman or something? I doubt it. I will never be convinced that it’s a good idea to kill off characters, especially primary heroes.
@akatsuki I think IM will be back, just once the MCU gets rebooted or they decide to bring in IM from the multiverse - basically, IM will be seen again on film in the next 10 years - just taking a break. Kind of how we've had multiple Batmen and multiple SpiderMen over the years, they rework it and he will come back. But Downey was done, and I think it was fair to him to close the door as they did as the ultimate hero, not recast him.
IM has possibly the best character arc in comic book movie history, he was the central character in the best comic book saga ever, and was featured in what, 9 films over 12 years? Given IM was a character that people questioned could carry his own movie way back, I would be thrilled if IM was my favorite character and ended up becoming one of the top movie characters of all time. Many fan favorite characters/teams (mine included) haven't even made it to the big screen, or if they did it was done badly, or was a version that never reflected the classic team makeup (Micronauts, FF, X-Men).
I like Alpha Flight. There, I said it.
The way they've been doing things, they have to retire characters. How can they ever establish Hercules or Post-Credit Teaser Character #136 when Iron Man and Captain America are still sucking the oxygen out of the room? As discussed earlier in the thread, Feige and Marvel have painted themselves into a corner in recent years. There are too many plates in the air right now.
Hell, the MCU isn't even free from Iron Man offshoots yet. Ironheart and War Machine are still in play. The reason Endgame's Cap/Peggy moment worked is because they put the work in establishing that relationship in The First Avenger and Agent Carter. None of the future projects have a chance unless we can form new emotional bonds with these characters, and I'll tell you now that it can't happen in something like Thunderbolts. There's not enough screentime to go around as is.
I finished Loki S2 today, and the last two episodes changed my opinion on the season. Loki is my favorite MCU thing since Endgame (with the possible exception of She-Hulk). I agree with everything fac said about Loki's character arc. Masterful stuff. I think the writers even gave Marvel an out with the Jonathan Majors/Kang problem. Canceling the Kang movie would be for the best IMO. Quantumania was horrendous, no one saw it, and Majors is a piece of shit. It's time to transition to Secret Wars/the FF & Dr. Doom/the X-Men.
And I know it's perfectly fine for creatives to have some misfires. Lord knows I haven't loved every single film by my favorite directors of all time. There is one Scorsese movie I'll likely never even try to watch.
Alright. Nobody else asked, but I'm dying to know. Which Marty movie?

I completely agree with this. She Hulk always comes to mind when I want to say Loki is the best thing they've done in the last few years. But Loki is incredible in a very different way. I was just so thrilled that they stuck that landing so well. I started rewatching the series today too, and it's such a through-line from the first time he sees the TVA. I hope the people behind this show, particularly this season, have a long career with Marvel.

Haw! Thank you for asking. I've still never seen Boxcar Bertha but just because it was always at the bottom of the list, and I still hope to see Silence and Hugo, but the one I will never try is New York New York. I just have a real problem with musicals!
I do agree the show really gave them an out with the Kangs. It could easily go either way, but it wouldn't be the first time we have to kinda forget about a credit scene, so I don't see that as a hurdle either. Where it stands, they could build toward Secret Wars with Doom, and nothing wrong with taking some more time to build that up. Hell, do a Doom movie. Doom: Time Runs Out. I dunno. Give it to the Loki people. But at this point, I feel like we could accept what they've done as an okay end to the Kang arc. Also having Doom and Loki be antagonistic would be really interesting, especially with Doom working toward God Emperor. And Doom is really interesting since he can be ANYONE'S villain. If he was the heavy in Doctor Strange 3, makes total sense. Armor Wars? Of course. Fantastic Four, yeah we know that, but he's faced off with the X-Men as well. So yeah, I'm down with that.

I haven't seen New York, New York or Boxcar Bertha. I like Hugo. It gave me an appreciation for the early days of filmmaking when I was still a wee boy.
I only saw Silence once, in theaters (it's a pretty punishing watch), but I think it's commonly considered a masterpiece now. It's my sixth favorite Scorsese movie. Recommended.
@tsi awesome, thank you. I recently read up on both Silence and Hugo. I'd kinda slept on them since I've spent the last decade watching mostly things my kids can watch/are into. And "sixth favorite" sounded funny on its face but also high praise when I know whatever the top five are, they're great films. He is funny because he has so many films that underperform yet still always makes projects he is passionate about that are outstanding movies. But yeah, I better get on those two.
