One thing I heard Dwight and Jesse say in today's stream that I hadn't heard before about the Sentinel is that they're planning on adding different textures to the differently-colored parts in the final version that aren't present in the prototype.

This worries me a bit - if the point is to be cartoon-accurate, adding texture to a smooth area defeats that purpose? I really don't like the over-texturing of Galactus and Giant-Man, so this could affect my purchase decision. I was very surprised to see texture on a recent release - and of course now I can't remember what it was.

Well...that guy who asked about textures should be happy.

I noticed the preorders for Xmen 97 Wolverine has opened again on the Target website. I believe it was sold out before. Seems to be back while supplies last I guess.

@schizm yeah, I'll likely cancel my order if it ends up like Giant Man. I don't like the realism they add to most Legends and I especially won't like it on a character pulled from a cartoon.

I'm pretty surprised by the amount of negative reaction to this, so I figured I'd go ahead and just quote what they said exactly so you can better decide whether to freak out about it or not.  The bit quoted below starts at the 1 hour, 13 minute, and 35 second mark of the stream.

Dwight Stall: I'm very pleased with and it seems like uh many of you guys are were you know very very uh happy to see this version of The Sentinel developed.

Ryan Ting: And all the detail too when you got to figure this big on this scale you saw this with Giant-Man we're actually sculpting and deco'ing a lot of the details.  It's not just painting things so all these lines you see that the the dark black lines they're all sculpted in and painted.

Dwight: Yeah and there's also uh Jesse wanted us to make sure that we uh since it is a clean form we wanted it to make it look uh premium.  So there are different levels of textures that are going to be applied to the different color breaks as well so that when you get it in hand if you have some of our uh previous Haslab figures like Giant-Man which will be coming soon--so you probably don't have that one yet--but you do have uh potentially Galactus and Sentinel.  You know we try to add different uh texture to the different breaks and colors so that it looks more real in more real world as opposed to just a clean smooth thing.

Jesse Falcon: It's an old toy-maker's trick to whip out the old Yixiang texture plates and sculpts.

Dwight: Zha Jiang yet to be applied.

Ryan: He knows all the tricks over all the years.

Dwight: Listen--he created the tricks.

Jesse: Well this was when we did the first Sentinel build a figure uh I stilling lovingly sculpted by Dave Cortez uh it came in and uh pulled out those plates and we were like let's do this this and in fact we just were downstairs looking at the build a figure for the new Marvel red brick wave which we won't talk about in great detail here but we used a lot of those textures on that as well.

Dwight: Absolutely.

Ryan: Teasing future items for a a later fan stream.

One interesting additional bit in this is that Jesse mentions they just did similar texturing like they used on the Toy Biz Sentinel and are planning for the new Sentinel for the new "epic" build-a-figure Dwight has been hyping for the past few months.  That suggests that BAF may have a significant amount of metal in the character design.  I already figured it would be Cameron Hodge since his design is fairly complex and Dwight loves deep-cut X-Men villains, and this further suggests it will be him.

Thanks, I was going to listen to it later, but now I don't have to. Sounds exactly like something I don't want added to the figure. I didn't even want the thigh cuts as I think they're ugly, but was willing to accept it as just something Legends does. That's disappointing, but if it saves me a bunch of money then I suppose it's not that bad.

On something this big and with relatively little detail I think some texturing would be a huge improvement - if done properly, of course. Luckily we have a year for them to show off what exactly they're going to do, and plenty of time to cancel if it's a turn off. I don't think it will be for me personally though!

I would hate for them to go too far with the detailing, as well. It should be simple appearance to match the source material.

The aesthetic is supposed to look like an Aliexpress knockoff Iron Man costume (as I've seen it affectionately referred to), the seamless metal/plastic casing is, by design in lore, meant to hide the mechanical nature. I'd hate to think they were compromising and adding needless textures to please the fans who aren't in the demographic they clearly aimed project at. Keep it moving if you don't like the design.

@h-bird

yeah I agree.

id love some texture too…no need to go overboard or make it unrecognizable to the fans of the cartoon.

Perhaps even try metallic paints to differentiate the materials and give it a more premium feel.

I’m in for at least one either way, even for just custom purposes.

It would be nice if they incorporated Diecast elements in order to make the sentinel feel more like a robot. but I don't think they confirmed any other materials outside of plastic
