Yeah.... it honestly makes sense that they didn't have 3 or 4 waves ready to go for this show since they didn't know how it would be received.   The fact is the only reason they probably had two waves able to ship back to back was because the show's debut was pushed back a couple of times.  It's dangerous to green light a third wave of figures for a property that's been delayed and pushed back... what if it's bad and people hate it?  then you have multiple waves of product that are going to tank.   So they green lit two waves of figures and hoped for the best. Â
The good news is the show is a massive hit.  The figures are selling well.  I'm sure they have expedited a 3rd - and probably a 4th - wave into production at this point but the lead time on that is long so we're probably a year away from those being finished and ready to ship to stores.  We're just going to have be patient.  And then hope Season Two... or X-Men 98 or whatever they're going to call it ... is just as good and gives us cause to demand waves 5, 6 and 7.

On the flip side, the show designs are largely based on the Jim Lee designs, and those are the default X-Men looks for many fans of the 90s thanks to the toon and Konami and Capcom games, figures of those designs would sell well regardless of if the show was a bomb or success.
Â
I think that's why we got a Wave 2 so quickly.
I think that's why we got a Wave 2 so quickly.
Agreed, look at how many times we've already seen the Jim Lee designs roll out prior to X-Men 97. We've had regular comic versions, Retro Card versions, VHS versions.
Â
So... yes the team's designs are largely the Jim Lee designs.  But almost the entire team has now been done.  There is only Jubilee that is a Jim Lee design re-release, and they just released her in the Caliban wave and the VHS collection, so probably why they held off on putting her in this line so far.   Beast isn't really a Jim Lee design if you want that animated head likeness, since that is unique to the show.  Â
Â
I do suspect that with the popularity of the show that Wave 3 may be something that was easy to put together from existing parts in order to get it out quickly, so Jubilee which may be close to a straight re-release.  Morph is a pretty easy figure to put together really.  Just the VHS collection body without the cel shading and the AOA Morph head and he's done.  Maybe toss in an extra existing head or two to "represent" his power.  Beast would need a new head so may have to wait until Wave 4.  Cable could probably be done pretty easily from existing pieces.  Forge wouldn't be hard to toss together.  And White Queen could be released using existing pieces fairly easily as well.  Â
Â
So if you want Wave 3 in a hurry, that's what it might look like.  Maybe it could include Mr. Sinister - which again might not be much more than a re-release of the VHS figure with slightly different paint job.
Â
Sunspot is a totally unique design for the show that doesn't match comic appearance much - and we still haven't even seem him powered up in the show yet.  So it makes sense to hold off on him to do a dedicated figure.  We still have plenty of season left to come up with other things that could make sense for future waves. Â
Â
And there is of course so many of those Genosha cameos that would be a great way to sneak long wanted figures into Legends existence -Â Â Exodus for example, or Pixie - so I'll keep fingers crossed that demand for this product stays strong.

Personally, I think Beast, Jubilee and Cable should all get updated pinless bodies to match the rest of the figures that have been released, all have been completley pinless except Gambit.
Â
If they were to do a pinless Beast, I would really hope for his colors to match the labcoat Beast so heads could be swapped on. Or just include a comic styled head too.

Well, do you want wave 3 good or do you want wave 3 fast?  It isn't going to be both 😉Â

I don't think the Jim Lee origins have much to do with this line thus far. I think we got two waves because Marvel/Disney wanted the promotion for the show. The character selection is probably a collaborative process between all of the powers that be and I do think the prior VHS line certainly played a role there. As for wave 3, if there was one planned from the start they might be forced to hold off until after the season is finished if it contains any characters we have yet to see. Or they simply decided on two waves initially and took a wait and see on more, because again, if the show had premiered when it was supposed to we would have got the first wave at the start and the second after it concluded. It seems safe to say if Hasbro was waiting to see how successful the show was before greenlighting a wave 3 we're definitely getting more because the show has been well received. And if they're working on it now then San Diego would be a logical time to reveal them, but they also may be eager to strike while the iron is hot and give us a look sooner. And from a promotional standpoint, getting a wave out in between seasons one and two is a nice way to give fans a holdover and keep the show fresh in their minds while we wait then hit us with a potential fourth wave when season two starts.

I don't think the VHS releases had much bearing on character selection. Cyclops, Jean, Wolverine and Storm all got VHS releases and Rogue, Gambit and Storm got Retro releases shortly before that.

While I don't doubt Hasbro may think so, that is not what should happen. Morph in the show is alot leaner then the buff body builder we got on the VHS box. He needs a thin body, and then possibly the AoA head. Here's hoping it's something akin to one of the thinner Spiderman bodies. Morph is not jacked in 97.
I wonder if they'd be bold enough, if they did Emma, to put her in the same or similar outfit to the one from the big box set. Yea these kind of hit retail, but so did Maddie. And that's the outfit Emma sports in the old show. Or they could make her a fan channel exclusive or something. Would be cool for people who didn't get the box set.

Â
I do think it matters in so much as those characters are bigger names and more popular than Jubilee and Morph and thus more likely to sell through - which is why they got prioritized into the line earlier.
Â
Nightcrawler has like 3 or 4 minutes of screen time total so far in the show - but got a figure in the line before Jubilee and Morph?  Heck even Forge was on screen for more actual minutes so far than Kurt.  It's because people like Nightcrawler and have been wanting a new figure.  So it's not just that they had recent figures, but that they had recent figures and aren't as popular as some of the other characters

Hopefully a sign we're getting a wave 3.
This is like me going home with every intention of giving my little girls ice cream for dessert and yet still asking them in daddy voice, "Do you want ice cream for dessert?"
Â
Â
LOL, who remembers him teasing 97 Cable a couple of days ago?
This is like me going home to my two little girls with a picture of an ice cream cone and asking them in daddy voice, "Does anyone here want ice cream?"Â and then saying, "Sorry, I don't have any ice cream planned for tonight."
Â
Except for the fact that we're not children...well, not technically anyway.
This latest episode adds even more options to the fold for future waves
I'm so giddy they chose this costume as her new look. I'm looking forward to seeing it lined up with the 90's costumes, as it's pretty timeless and she often goes back to it in different incarnations.
