Yeah... that second episode went so hard, I was kind of shocked. I found myself - weirdly for me - wanting a Val Cooper figure - just in her power suit and glasses. With the way the episode ended for Storm I'm wondering if the series is going to do an adaptation of the Lifedeath storyline and introduce Forge?
For a wave 3 of figures it feels like we have to get Morph, Jubes and Sunspot and probably Beast. But obviously I have no idea what other directions this show is going to move in. They already gave us Nightcrawler and Goblin Queen (spoilers)... so there are obviously any number of characters we haven't seen yet that could be at play.
Obviously since we know Maddie's on hand Mr. Sinister won't be far behind, but I do not really feel like I need another Mr. Sinister figure frankly and am hoping they'll resist that temptation.
If we ever get a new Sinister, I hope it's his black duds from Krakoa. Huge improvement on the original costume and it could help balance the tooling costs for a future Krakoa/modern X wave.
Absolutely loved the first two episodes, especially the second one. Lightyears ahead of the 90s show, for me at least (although I’ve been giving the original a rewatch lately and I’m enjoying it more this time around). It does indeed “go hard” and it’s amusing that “those guys” are mad about Morph being enby when “those guys” are themselves the literal villains of the show with almost no allegorical distance. The specific vocabulary used about the FoH and their specific crimes was . . . satisfying.
They still won't get it. I saw comments somewhere bitching about how they made Magneto "woke." I think you missed the whole point of the character, fella.
Not to mention the fact that the X-Men have always been the most subtextually gay superheroes in comics. I'd argue Claremont wrote almost every character as bisexual. Others, like Rachel and Illyana, have always been pretty clearly gay even if they weren't allowed to show it on the page.
These 2 episodes made me really like Storm and Cyclops for the first time, and Morph's use of his powers as both a support unit (Archangel and Blob) and as a tank (Deathstrike, Colossus and Psylocke) was fantastic. Definitely looking forward to more episodes and I really hope they can keep it up. This is by far one of the best show revivals I've seen.
Whoa. I don't find Storm very relatable because she's basically the most competent badass in all of fiction, but I've always admired her. She's a bad bitch.

Oh don't get me wrong, Storm is definitely a badass, I just never really liked her much in the old toon or subsequent versions. In 97 she's still very much like the old toon, but between glassing the desert and scenes like when her and Jean were talking, I feel like there's more depth to her this time around.

Is Ep.2 the best-ever characterization of Magneto in non-comic book media ever? I kinda think so. So nuanced. Purple jammies Magneto is like a perfect representation of the look from the show, down to the expressions on the faces. It’s weird that Cyclops is such a whiff with the head when Magneto, Logan and others are so strong.
Agreed on the portrayal of Magneto, though I hope he gets some casual clothes as it is kind of humorous to see him just lounging about the mansion in his costume. That scene in the atmosphere though did really make me miss David Hemblen from the old show. He was so good at chewing lines and delivering grandiose proclamations. Curse you, Father Time!
I'll throw in that I absolutely loved the two episodes thus far, and can't wait for more.
That same theme song with the updated HD animation...hoo, lordy, someone turn on the A/C...
@misfit I miss Hemlben too, but the new fella's doing a bang up job. It's a big role to take over, even if it was from a cartoon, and he's leaning in hard. I think he really sells the conflict in Magneto where he's almost cursed by the memory of Charles to change his ways. "Don't make me let you down" indeed.

Really glad I picked up the figure.
Those new gloves are making his arms so itchy!
The show is straight up amazing and is much better than I dared hope or expect.
I agree that this is probably the best characterization of Magneto in the history of non-comics media, though I always thought the line in X2 in which Magneto meets Pyro on the Blackbird, asks him his "real name" and then tells him that he is "a god among insects" was a chillingly perfect depiction of everything the character is supposed to be.
Episode 2, though, captures all the strained nobility that such is a part of his character. They really underscored the tension between his sense of loyalty and honor and his openness to violence. Though at points it seems like the former are used simply to justify the latter, here it becomes more nuanced because he is willing to reconsider the latter in service of the former. His speech was pitch-perfect Magneto and his last line to the panel of judges was one of many great little touches in these episodes.
I would go further and say these were also the best out-of-comic characterizations of Storm and Cyclops ever. Maybe even Jean. Actually, probably Jean, too.
Loved the emphasis on familial relationships - which, to me, is the singular reason why X-Men is different from (and better than) every other superhero property. They explored Jean and Ororo's sisterly relationship in a way the old series never had, established Morph and Wolverine as buddies, and leaned into the natural bond between Jubilee and Sunspot. Even cooler was how, by setting episode 1 in the immediate aftermath of Xavier's death, they were able to do a version of the old stand-alone, cooldown issues that were so great in the Claremont era. I always loved that they'd take time to show the team loafing around the mansion and debriefing after a traumatic ordeal; it made you feel the weight of what they had gone through, deepened the interpersonal dynamics of the group, and made you anticipate whatever was next. The exposition served as a great way onboard new viewers, too.
The basketball fan service was very welcome, particularly because it was kept to literally the perfect length. Long enough to enjoy, but not so long that it felt indulgent and extraneous. The various civvy looks for all the characters - particularly Gambit's belly shirt - were tremendous, too.
My only gripes - and they're unavoidable - is that, yeah, some of the voices sounded off due to the age of the actors. Most people were mentioning Wolverine's, but I actually got pretty used to that after fifteen minutes or so. I also imagine him as being an old man anyway, so the gruffness and drawn out cadence at least makes sense. To me, Rogue's was way more distracting. You could really feel the age in that voice, and it was weird hearing the voice of a Southern great aunt come out of a character so infused with youthfulness and energy.
I kind of wish Storm would've started with her old hairstyle and then changed to the mohawk in response to losing her powers, so that she'd look reborn when it came time for her inevitable return to the team. Another small thing.
My most wanted figure for wave three is definitely Morph. I was already in love with the Wolverine and have three already, but the quality of the show sold me on getting others I was on the fence about, including M suit Mags, X-Cutioner, Bishop, and Nightcrawler.

One thing to keep in mind with the change in looks for some characters, it's not really the immediate aftermath of the original toon, there's a year between season 5 and X-Men 97 season 1
@fenrys Bishop finally saw a barber. I imagine Storm dragged him along when she got her new look. Heck maybe that's why she has her new look. Had to convince Bishop to go and the only way was to imply it was just for herself.
A lot of thoughtful conversation about the show going on here. As always, I recommend those with thoughts bring them over to the X-Men '97 thread in the Movies and TV subforum so we can keep it all in one place. It's much easier to discuss that way.

I have MAJOR issues with all the movies except the two Deadpools & New Mutants (and am dreading DP3 for the same reasons), but that line of dialogue is so good, I use it in place of "you're a gentleman & a scholar," haha.
