Happy birthday, Norm!
Also, I am decidedly NOT a Convention person.
I'm the same- did the 2012 Chicago Comic Con and never went again. I imagine NYCC would be the death of me.
Ryan also said they're already planning for 2025!
Good news- hopefully this allays some of the fears about the future of the line.
The way Dwight put it was, and I may be paraphrasing, "Do it like it's the last time." This could all end tomorrow, so they're trying to make the product as good as possible, as if they'll never get another chance to.
Thanks for the report Norm! Glad you got to chat with them, and grateful to you and the others that pass along some good vibes. I'm sure most people are friendly in person, but the amount of animosity that gets flung on social media has to wear them down.
Thanks for the report! The female figure that came to mind regarding updated articulation was Psylocke.
Don't know which Marvel anniversary takes place next year but I'm going to assume FF retro card back? Inhumans hopefully can finally be finished. Really just give me a 3-pack of Feral, Wolfsbane & Rachel pleaseeee.
A few that come to mind:
80th Anniversary of Patsy Walker
60th Anniversary of Daredevil, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Mastermind, Unus the Untouchable, Sif, Skurge, Karnilla, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Norman Osborn, Beetle, Kraven, Kang, Attuma, Edwin Jarvis, Wonder Man
50th anniversary of Wolverine, Iron Fist, Punisher, Colleen Wing
40th anniversary of Secret Wars (Titania, Volcana, Julia Carpenter, Beyonder), Power Pack, Doug Ramsey, Spot
The leak list I saw (but did not mention to Ryan) was the anniversary of Wolverine. Lots of updates and fan requested figures coming alongside our favorite feral Canuck. Dwight's eyes really lit up talking about it. He was giddy. I can't wait to see.
If anyone is willing to take the chance to ask a specific question, would you mind asking if GOTGv3 Gamora and High Evolutionary are coming soon, likely, not likely or should we invest in customs?
@normdapito first of all, happy birthday!!
Secondly, thanks so much for broaching the Kirby figure question. Their reply makes total, if unfortunate, sense. Looks like I’ll need to beg Benty to make a sculpt to put on another figure. 😉
Ok let’s see, talked to Dwight and Dan again today and they are both so nice in person. Dan follows me on Twitter but I still feel like I’m annoying them and they answer every question they can and are just as geeked out about the line and the characters as we are. I got an X 23 today and Dan was super hype about her.
okay i asked about Jack of Hearts he said he is coming. I said I need the full on ugly original costume and he laughed. he asked was I serious I told him I’d buy two.
he couldn’t talk about sales but Dan was surprised that Giant Man hasn’t funded yet. He’s confident he just thought the price point would have it finished by now.
he also said without mentioning specifics that he’s surprised Bucky Cap didn’t move. I’ve never seen one in person but now I want one.
More Inhumans are coming he really wants to do Lockjaw.
i keep forgetting to ask about comic versions of Young Avengers and another Magik because I am poor.
I keep pushing for Arakko mutants and Dan just laughs so…
Ryan and I also talked about pricing, which came from our discussion about Mindless One and Void waves not being offered at Target/Walmart. I asked if the quick moves to clearance had any correlation with rising prices. The moves to clearance have more to do with moving product out in order to get new products in. There’s limited shelf space at these retailers, and he explained something about how (I’m simplifying because he got pretty technical and I wasn’t entirely catching every detail, but he was pretty well versed in the logistics) ML assortments have more individual wave SKUs compared to one asst SKU for Black Series or Classified, etc. This means in order to get something like the new D+ wave in, they have to make room by moving the Quantumania wave out. The quick succession forces waves to make way for new waves. This allows them to, ideally, time releases more appropriately to promote media like movies or shows. We all know that hasn’t always worked out perfectly.
I asked if prices have any chance of shaving down at all since so many waves get discounted anyway, and he said it was very difficult to get those prices to come down, let alone keeping the prices from going up any further. That’s something they’re actively working hard at. I mentioned how it hurts to pay $25 for a figure that includes less, or omits BAF parts, but he says they’ve tried to balance that with the deluxe figure offering, which have been among some of their strongest figures like Blob (a favorite this year of both Ryan and Dwight) or Mojo. They offer them that way as an alternative to forcing people to buy figures they may not want just for the BAF.
Jesse Falcon was also present. I did not speak with him, but thinking about that reminded me of the LAST TIME I was at NYCC, because I did try to speak with him then, and he actually was a little intimidating when I approached. That really turned me off. I couldn’t remember what year it was that I had gone, but thinking of that encounter reminded me of what the ML team was actually promoting at the time. In the case, I don’t actually remember any other figures except RACHEL GREY from what had to be the Brood Queen wave. That figure/wave is listed on the web as having been released in 2007, so it must have been 2006 or so that I had gone. Feels like a lifetime ago.
It’s also funny because Rachel is the first character I specifically brought up with Ryan about completing single gaps on teams. He talked about how there would be a noticeable quality discrepancy between some of those old teams and the new style figures that would complete them, thanks to advances in articulation and pinless bodies and face prints. I’m not sure if he brought it up to discourage the idea of completing the teams, because they seem very happy with the advances, or if it was just to prepare the audiences for how good some of those team completers will be. When I mentioned Wolfsbane (also leaving out any indication that I read a leaked list she was on) he got a little hush hush, as if he couldn’t talk about her (yet).
He also brought out the prototypes for the unmasked Spider-Men. Toby, Andrew, Tom on the new body. That figure looks incredible, and the Tom head is the same sculpt we’ve gotten, but the face print looks even sharper and more accurate. It was really dead on in person up close (with my deteriorating vision). Andrew Garfield looked amazing too, no pun intended. I brought up the laughable Walmart ASM Garfield figure from years ago, and Ryan agreed we’ve come a very long way.
Thanks for the info, all. Funny enough, you all provide better information than most of the influencers who get to interview the Marvel team on video.
Thanks for the report! The female figure that came to mind regarding updated articulation was Psylocke.
This makes a lot of sense. I know a lot of people are wanting a different version of Betsy, but a Lee era update wouldn't be unwelcome.
Haven't you all had your fill? 😆
I got an X 23 today and Dan was super hype about her.
*eyes emoji*
Laura, armored Psylocke, and Magik are probably my three biggest wants at the moment.
okay i asked about Jack of Hearts he said he is coming. I said I need the full on ugly original costume and he laughed. he asked was I serious I told him I’d buy two.
This makes me smile. You're not the first person to say that they're bemused about the desire for classic Jack from we fans. Kinda wonder if they're scared of his costume, and if that level of paint and detail might mean he'd have to be a deluxe figure of some kind.
@tsi im going to break down and get magik online, I’m going to ask today if they will re release anytime soon. I came to nycc looking for an archangel at a reasonable price and I have found nothing. But I got a lotta figures for good deals so I’m hype. I walked by an x23 for 40 and found her for 20 two minutes later.
