For those considering a more classic mask for Dr Doom, I tried the face plate that was included with the Doom in the Avengers anniversary Secret Wars 2pk with Monica Rambeau. It fits the face but doesn’t cover the forehead. The hood can cover enough of the gap, but it also doesn’t stick on the face. You might need to get creative or use some blue tack. The open eye holes line up perfectly to the eyes!

Thanks!  I'll have to try that out!

@normdapito Thanks for the tip!  The silver color matches up ok?   Going to have to dig out the Secret Wars Doom and try that out when I get my Doom from the ole Pile-o-Loot.

Silver is a touch lighter, and more glossy (since it's unpainted plastic) on the Hasbro face plate. it reveals the forehead and chin of the Mezco head. But again, if you position the hood just right, it blocks most of the exposed skin. It is impressive though how well the eye holes line up. You can still sense his intensity with so little of his expression visible!

Welp. I opened Doom today and I'm feeling like a fool. I sold my Legends figure with soft goods robe and skirt (a figure I loved) to get this one, and I'm hugely disappointed.

Even with all the extras, I don't think it was worth close to the $155 ($175 after tax and shipping) that I paid for it. I fully expected that to be the case because the price was outrageous, but my figure came with a host of problems that are probably specific to my figure.

1) The second I pulled him out of the box, one of the magnets that attached the cape to the chest separated from the gold circle piece on the cape. Immediately supergluing a $155 figure back together did not improve my opinion of the figure.

2) The first time I articulated the elbow, the armor band that covers the articulation came off. I articulated the other elbow and that one came off too. I was able to snap the pieces back into place, but they still fall off at the slightest touch.

3) The belt will not fucking stay on.

On the plus side, the diecast legs are nice. They're sturdy and hold a pose well. That's about the only nice thing I have to say.

I've never been burned this badly by selling a figure before I had its replacement in hand. This will serve as a very expensive lesson.

I think my only course of action is to wait for the rumored Legends figure this year, buy that, and sit on this one until I can at least recoup my money. The funny thing is I almost skipped Mezco Doom because I'm superstitious about Mezco figures. Even when I was buying them all the time, I felt like they only had about a 50% hit rate. My last Mezco figure, Constantine, is excellent. I should've known the next one would be a miss.

I didn't have this problem for but for a while I've been thinking they really need to rethink the way they do belts. The stiff, hard plastic isn't great and the 'tiny peg into tiny hole' clasp they use is god awful.

***

My Amazing Spider-Man arrived today. It has the same problems as their other MCU Spider-Mans, namely the tree-trunk neck and very oversized heads. I think you'd need to shrink them by at least 10% to make them proportional with the body.

If you can get over the big heads, it's a good figure. The thin, lanky body is a good match for Ditko's art, and both the Ditko-style head and the blocky unmasked head match also match his art well. The plastic gloves and boots blend much better with the soft goods than I feared, especially compared to their first comic-style attempt at Spider-Man years ago when they used really thick plastic, making him look like he wearing gauntlets and greaves. The suit's well tailored and the colors are fantastic, another point over their original Spider-Man, which sported dark red and navy blue.

All the accessories are great and I especially like the web backpack, though I wish they would've painted the web accessories with a greyish white, instead they seem to be unpainted, slightly translucent white plastic.

Beyond the head size, my only other complaints would be that he doesn't seem to have any hands that can hold the news paper, and that the camera straps kinda suck. Don't know why they didn't just gives us a fabric strap. I can't get the camera to lay flush against his chest when I have it draped around his neck, no matter how I try to pose it.

While this figure is great for a Ditko / high school early era Spider-Man, I hope they eventually make a more adult one based on John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru's art, preferably using the Iron Fist body.

How does Mezco decide which figures come in cardstock boxes and which come in tins?

Used to be that only PX figures came in tins. Regular releases were in large boxes and MDX releases were in small boxes. Now what sort of packaging they come in seems to be based on random whims.

If you have it, the head from the ML Amazing Fantasy 60th Anniversary Spider-Man looks decent on the recent Mezco Spider-Man. The reds match well and it's more proportional. You'll have to pry a neck peg out of one of the heads (I took it from the half masked head; never planned on using it) and stick something inside of the neck hole on the AF 60th head so that the peg stays in. Biggest problem is that the smaller head highlights how thick the neck is.

Also tried the ML Retro Spider-Man head but its shade of red was noticeably darker than the Mezco's red. Unfortunately, Hasbro never really nailed the Ditko style eyes, so I'll probably end up ultimately going back to the Mezco head.

This happened with mine except it was both knee pads. Had to glue them on and getting them to actually stick was about as fun as you'd expect. Same thing with the magnet, which was much easier to fix at least. The belt was also causing similar problems, but I thickened the peg with the sliiightest dab of super glue and now it holds no issue.

I still like it enough to overlook these flaws, especially since all of them were fixable without compromising the toy itself in any way, but you really shouldn't have to do that. Especially for a figure that costs this much.

Opened my FF set up tonight! Reed is absolutely the highlight of the set, and such a fun figure in hand: I'm so glad to have him, and a Mr. Fantastic figure that actually displays the characters powers so effectively. The movie figure with the plug in stretched parts came close, and I loved that one as a kid, but his complete lack of stability always drove me nuts 😆 Thing is a close 2nd, and while I may have some "favorite character on the team" bias on this one, I'm very happy with how he turned out. The sculpt is great, and I'm digging all of the head sculpts for different reasons. Articulation is a bit limited, but he looks awesome, and does what I need him to do. Herbie is a very cool extra, and much bigger than I expected, which was a nice surprise.

Sue is fine: absolutely needed SOME kind of invisible hands/heads, and feels kind of incomplete and phoned in without them. Also very hesitant to swap out the hands too much after breaks on both Harley and Catwoman on this body, which desperately needs an upgrade we're unlikely to see. The force field effect makes her a little more visually interesting, but I wish she had some sculpted effect (all one piece) hands that worked with it better.

Johnny is honestly a mess: finicky all around, and such a headache to try to pose. I can't get most of the flame effects to clip on the way they're intended to, and that base is a pain to work with. On top of my frustration with the fire pieces, his right hand peg snapped when I tried to remove the "shooting fireball" hand, which was just too heavy for him to support. Would've strongly preferred a flamed on version, and I'm leaning towards just grabbing a Retro Torch for display purposes. Is it worth contacting Mezco for a replacement figure in this case? I've never dealt with them as far as breaks/QC issues like this.

I generally love what Mezco is doing with these figures, but this set is a mixed bag for me...and at these prices, they should be putting maximum effort in on ALL of them.

Bummed to hear about all of these QC issues.  One of the reviewers I watched for Doom and FF reviews named zoebadblood who has a lot of Mezco figures mentioned that he feels it has gotten worse in recent years.  I have about ten Mezcos now and haven't had an issue yet luckily.  Hopefully everyone is able to do exchanges to get new copies.

I love the new Spider-Man!  It's really hard to get the parachute to stay while he's on the stand, but it looks great.
