I cannot back the reanimated corpse of Tony Stark cosplaying as Dr Doom. I hate essentially everything about this

Deadpool and Wolverine

Just to counter, how did you feel about Cap cosplaying as Human Torch? I know he played the character before, but I believe RDJ is playing DOOM, not a Stark variant just like that Johnny Storm wasn't a Steve Rogers variant. I'm expecting a performance so unlike Tony that it's easy to completely distinguish them.

100% different. Evans is playing a character he played before in a nostalgia trip that's on one hand a homage to the old Fox Marvel projects. RDJ playing Doom is a desperate ploy by the studio to put a bandaid on the MCU cause Kang was not working and had real life issues. So they just turned Doctor Doom into Iron Man, but maybe evil and with an accent. One is a joke played for laughs and a good time, and the other is a cashgrab at the expense of a more interesting take on the character that's being rushed into existence.

I get that perspective, but I do think D&W set something of a precedent. The character seems to be appearing in FF and we have no idea how long the casting has been planned but the character has at least been planned for some time. But how you see it is of course entirely valid. You're definitely not even close to alone with that reaction.

Regarding the casting news, I have a feeling it'll all come down to how they play it.

Spoiler
Something tells me that it may not be long term- i.e. for more than one movie. Especially as things get more cosmic in the MCU and with all the multiverses, I can see it being more of a Superior/Infamous Iron Man situation, where in an alternate reality, Tony Stark went bad instead of good. Maybe in whatever universe Monica is now in, or something triggered by the Fantastic Four. With as devoted as Marvel has been to respecting the diversity and ethnicity of respective characters, I can't see them suddenly forgoing that for Doom. People have been clamoring for a Romani actor to play Doom for ages, and I don't think Marvel is blind to that fact. Is RDJ coming back a cash grab? Probably, to an extent. The man's gonna make a hell of a payday to come back, whcih is probably another reason why they'll only use him for one or two movies before going with the real Doom. And in that time, they'll use him as much as they can, if only to further other characters like Spiderman who are closely tied to Tony. If done right, Doom is a character that could make as many (or more) appearances in the MCU as Loki, and have just as much importance.

I think it's a bummer that Kang is clearly just gonna either get handwaved away, or explained away offscreen. With as much setup as was done, however rocky or well received as it may or may not have been, I think a lot still could've been done with him, and recasting would've been the optimal move. Not only would it not have thrown a wrench in their plans, but you'd also give another talented actor a chance at a big role in the MCU.  Sure, there's plenty of other big name villains to do over time, but now Kang is all but done for, and may never be seen on screen again. I know nothing is set in stone, and there's always the chance they salvage it somehow, but the way it seems to be going is a bit of a bummer.

All that said, I'm really excited for what else is ahead. Really stoked for Fantastic Four (even if I don't care for the subtitle), and Thunderbolts seems like it could be a fun time too, if it doesn't take itself too seriously. Lots of potential for exciting figures ahead!

Doom, Kang, FF, all that.

It definitely is for at least two movies, I think three. They announced him as Victor Von Doom, so I doubt the variant Tony idea. That could be entirely where they go, but my feeling is probably not. I for one am ready for RDJ to play a very serious villain. Would I have preferred someone else? Absolutely. Someone more in line with the ethnicity? Even better. I guess RDS was Lithuanian and Hungarian, but I admit total ignorance about that whole aspect. Either way it's not the worst news I've heard from Marvel Studios, heh. But I do get the hope for this to be a quick thing before getting to the 'real' Doom, but I genuinely suspect this is it.

I totally get the disappointment about Kang too, but after his defeat in Quantumania and the comments at the end of Loki... it really felt like it could be an ending to that character. More could definitely have been done, it seemed like it could have gone either way.

But, hey, after Secret Wars, I feel like everything is going to be up in the air and probably recast city. Kang, Doom, Wolverine, everyone can get a fresh start when realities collide and we're left with only one universe. Hopefully.

I dont expect RDJ to be Doom long term. But I also think if anyone is expecting a new Doom to emerge and become a Loki esque figure, you're delusional. This IS the massive Doctor Doom crossover. This IS MCU Doom. This is what we're getting. A rushed evil Iron Man. Hence why I wanted them to wait on Doom until all this was over

With the announcements at comic con yesterday, I think most of my collecting as a movie figure collector will be complete in the next 2-3 years. My goal was to have most of the significant marvel characters in a movie style and with Wolverine this year, and the F4 next year, that pretty much does it. Questionable casting aside, it will be great to have a movie version of the new Avengers villain they announced. There would’ve been a hole in the Collection without him. By 2027, Sentry, Wiccan, Speed, and Wonder Man should have figures, tying up the Avengers, young Avengers, and Thunderbolts well. I’m hoping for a Werewolf and Elsa, along with one of the Deadpool cameos, to round off my supernatural  side. Hope to see all the cameos released eventually. They will fill in certain teams well. That only really leaves 2 question marks for me that I would like to have on a shelf one day, Nova and Ghost Rider. Both of them have rumored projects so hopefully we will see them soon. Until then, I’m working on a custom Ghost Rider to fill that hole, just like I did for Iron Fist.

This only really leaves the X-Men. I would love if they did some more Fox figures to go with Wolverine. If they don’t, the waiting game for the eventual MCU X-Men will begin. Working on some customs for Scott, Jean, and Storm in the mean time. The only thing I see myself picking up beyond that, are any Spidey movie villains that come along. I pray Electro and Lizard are still coming, and hopefully the Spidey 4 rumors are true and we get Scorpion, Kraven, and Mr. Negative. My never gonna happen wishful thinking figure has always been ASM 2 Rhino. I wish we would get that someday.

this went longer than I wanted it to, but I see the light at the end of the tunnel, and it’ll be so fun to see what our shelves look like in 2027!
