I assume it still holds that Sony gets a small cut of any Legends based on their Marvel films? Other than the true Spidey films, might not be worth it to Hasbro to do much beyond Venom in figure form. Hasbro has ignored the spinoffs like Morbius and Madame Web and I assume will ignore Kraven.
Given the Hasbro team claimed they didn't know (which I think means they didn't know officially with style guides/approvals) about the No Way Home cast, it also may be the case that Sony plays some things too close to the vest for Hasbro to consistently have product ready ahead of time.
It's probably easier for Hasbro to work with Disney than it is Sony since Disney is the one who controls the property. I don't know how the revenue stuff works though. Sony might get a cut of the merch Hasbro creates, but it might come from Disney's piece of the pie and not Hasbro's. It feels like Hasbro has done a lot of Venom stuff of late so they may not mind sitting out the release of the new film to see how it's received before tooling anything new. Hasbro is almost certainly not going to tool a Venom horse unless they know people really want it.
Here's what I know about the toy money - when Marvel sold the film rights to their characters in the mid-1990s when they were going bankrupt merchandising rights were not included in anything they sold. Having said that it doesn't mean Marvel is completely free to sell toys based upon movies from Sony, Fox, Universal, or that other tiny company they sold rights to whose name I forget now (the one that created the cruddy Roger Corman Fantastic Four movie because they had to before those rights went back to Marvel for not producing a film within a certain amount of time).
Sony still owns the copyright on the specific character looks and actor likenesses that they include within their films. Actor likenesses further require that Sony come to an agreement with that actor. Whenever we don't get figures based upon Fox or Sony film looks it's always because Marvel isn't able to come to an agreement to use those likenesses on merchandise. I don't recall the specifics of those agreements ever coming out in the past, but if anyone knows any specifics please do share.
At some point, I'm pretty sure Marvel started including likeness rights for merchandise in with the contract for work on a film so as to avoid such headaches. I'm guessing Sony does the same thing and has for awhile unless an actor has enough leverage to do something separate. The various Amazing Spider-Man 2 releases we've seen of late would seem to indicate something like that took place where Sony had some likeness rights with the actor agreements for that film creating a loophole when it comes to No Way Home merch. I'd just be curious to know if when it came time to bring Andrew Garfield in for No Way Home if he didn't agree to any merch with his face or if Sony got a cheaper deal by excluding it and was planning on leveraging the old agreement or if they just stumbled into it after the fact. It makes sense that Maguire's rights had expired since it had been so long since he did Spider-Man 3. Also possible it's just business and Garfield and Sony's people were all onboard with not including likeness rights because the old agreement could still be used, though I would think if all things were equal they would have preferred to redo it and been able to sell No Way Home branded merch with Andrew Garfield's face included.
Watching Deadpool and Wolverine on digital - Hasbro needs to announce a bare armed Wolverine stat. Not in a 2 pack. I'll want a few.
Big week for the Canadians. Getting Phoenix, Hulkbuster, Odin as well as the Strange Tales wave from Gamestop. Rogue and Destiny also shipping from Amazon.ca.
What Enigmatic Clarity says is true - Marvel/ToyBiz sold the movie/entertainment rights to their characters but retained ALL merchandizing rights to those characters - so even back when the first Sony Spider-Man movies came out ToyBiz got to make as much movie related toy product as they wanted without paying Sony, they also got to license the images out to companies to make paper plates and halloween costumes and all of that jazz.
Now it's possible that as part of the negotiations when Disney wanted access to Spider-Man for their MCU films that they conceded some portion of merchandising profit back to Sony as part of that deal, but I think it's pretty likely that Hasbro has access to the Sony movie stuff without needing a separate deal. That does NOT include actor's likeness rights though apparently- that does seem to be a stumbling block in some instances.
That's why they can do as much Spider-verse product as they do. That is actually easier without needing any likeness rights.
But if they want to do a figure of a masked Spider-Man or a masked Venom or a CGI character without an actor's likeness I think they can without too much fuss. Which is why I'm holding out hope that at the very least they do that cool ass Venom-horse they've shown in the previews. I don't buy movie figures anymore, but I'd buy that.
Picked up Venom & Carnage from the recent Target sale.
Both are pretty solid figures. Carnage is an absolute beast and the "tentacles" hold their positions...so far.
Venom's on the other hand are a floppy mess (no bendy wire inside). Don't plan on displaying him with them anyways.
Movie was garbage, but the figures are a pleasant surprise!
Just poking my head in to mention nothing shown at NYCC. I'll turn off the lights on my way out.
Yep. I really expected to see Cassandra Nova or Johnny Storm.
Yeah, the focus seems to be on the X-Men 97 Sentinel. Which, I suppose if you're only gonna show off one new thing, it might as well be big. Was hoping for at least a pipeline or a tease, but maybe it's still too early for concrete plans and we'll see something around ToyFair. Amazon is saying my Outriders, D&W Wolvie, and Colossus are due this week, so at least there's that.
Colossus and Outriders shipped for me from Amazon, with Deadpool & Friend scheduled for Monday.
Still no movement on my Wolvie, but Amazon says he's arriving Tuesday, same day as the steelbook release, so I'm cool with that.
Was hoping for at least a little update on the NWH Electro and Lizard. Crazy to think it may be almost 4 years since the movie before their figures drop.
I wonder if them saying "we've heard you want these figures" is less 'they're coming, eventually ' and more 'we get it, shut up already and let us cook the stuff we really wanna do'.
