Okay, Warbird is back in stock.
I was just able to order two more as a test, so far no cancellations. What happens if I try to order two more after ordering the first two?
I placed a couple orders for Carol, for pick up and to be shipped. Hopefully something sticks.
My local store is showing 8 in stock, in a fairly suburban/rural-adjacent Target - not a flagship store or anything like that. Seems promising that there will be plenty of inventory out there.
Target.com allowed pick up orders at my store sometime after I placed my order to ship. I placed a second order at 6am. Most of the stores have a good amount of the stock accounted for, except at my store where it looks like I'm the only order.
Here's how it's going to play out at my store. I'm going to place a store pick up order. The employee will go to the aisle location to pick my figure, but not see it on the shelf because it's still in the backroom. Then they will say to themselves, "I guess we don't have any, I should zero out the inventory." I'm going to try to get a few orders in and hit my store at 8am. I still have a UK preorder that says August, if all else fails.
I knew it. My store is complete trash. I go in a few minutes after 8am to try to grab Warbird before they can pick my order. Give someone the dpci, 0 on floor, 0 in back. By 8:18 my pick up order was canceled. While I was there, talked to a guy looking for a Tiger Paw. He saw the Joe on a cart yesterday but couldn't buy. I know there was at least one of those available this morning, but no pick up allowed. Damn, we were the first people in the store and we both come up empty. Can't blame anyone who does the scan a different item shenanigans.
This is my plan as well . . . but midnight where?
Target orders start at midnight in the time zone for their corporate headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That's the Central Time Zone, so one hour earlier than EST.

Thanks for the clarity . . . though it was a bit mysterious, puzzling, bewildering even.

I would email [email protected] and let them know about your experience with this trash policy. I've already sounded off about my Tiger Paw experience.
Exactly my experience this morning. Showed 8 at the store. Ordered one for pickup. Order cancelled. Went to the store anyway. They told me it was on a reset pallet and wouldn't be out until later some time. Went back home to check the stock. Zero. Some shady stuff at Target.
I found one (and only one) in the third Target I went to, in a cart of Returns. When I scanned it on their machine, it said Zero in store. I fully believe Gremlins are involved (perhaps Mr. Myxlplyx or Impossible Man).

This is counterintuitive, but I have found that those in-store scanners don't directly access the store-based inventory system. Instead, they show you the same thing that the public website does, so it accesses their web-based database which has a different inventory count than the in-store systems have.
The reason I say this is because of what you found yourself is what I've seen--I've scanned items that I found in the store and had that in-store scanner tell me that they don't have any which clearly isn't true.
Put in a pick-up order this morning at around 6am and got a notification at 8:04 that it was a ready for pick up. So got to lay around the house and roll in about 10:00 to grab her. No fuss.
During that time, I watched on Popfindr as the 12 out of 14 stores in my area that had her go from 7 or so in stock, quickly fall to zero. I was actually pretty shocked at how fast they sold out at all those stores.
