I lean toward classic looks but I love that extra detail put into the Skrull wave Doom. My mind still reads it as "classic". I put a soft goods cape on him and it just puts the figure over the top. He's one of my top 5 Hasbro MLs of all time. I love him a whole lot and he's another villain (alone with TB Green Goblin) that I feel is the final say on the character and chances are very low that I would be buying a $50 remake.
Hasbro's recent Doom is very good. It was my figure of the year whenever it first dropped. I'd still take a classic version, though.
I wouldn't compare Doom to Loki, who's never had a good figure. Or Green Goblin, who hasn't had a good figure since 2006. I'd put Magneto in the same boat if not for the MAFEX figure.
I hoped Hasbro would remedy the issue after they gave us a great Ultron, Red Skull, and Dormammu, but they never worked their way through the others.
Hulk teased! I wonder if we see him sooner than I expected. Maybe next week (?)
For the record yes I would absolutely go for a Maximum Doom. Personally I just think other things take priority - a Brubaker era Cap, Coipel Thor come to mind. Winter Soldier would be interesting in this line.
If their MAXIMUM initiative had been a well-done figure at regular price but Hasbro Pulse-exclusive accessory sets that came with all the peripherals that people could optionally buy I think the entire endeavor would have had much less price angst. But they really want you to buy the Hot Dog and aaaaaall the toppings, even if you really just want the Hot Dog.
And ....people would just bitch about that. "Why not put it all in one package?"" "Why do I have to go separately to Pulse then it sells out!?" On the positive side, we just have different opinions and wants - on the negative I think the collecting community across brands has a lot of whiny people who are unhappy. I don't see this figure as accessories - I see the best Spider-man very specific to an artist and era and that's why I'm paying the money. There are literally dozens of $25 figures every year. I have passed on them for years until the line got good again recently. Like good as in - toys I actually fucking want to own - not priced on a budget. We'll see where reuse comes in, but whatever they do will retain the exclusivity of the line mostly.
I guess it's partly perceived value. I would've bought Psylocke, Lilandra, Sabertooth, and Punisher In a heartbeat if single releases. I didn't because they were part of two packs with figures I didn't want. Yet I bought Max Spidey, even at what I think is an inflated price.
^^jeeze I hate to think that was the last post on the Marvel board. Somebody please post something pithy.
I feel like the last survivor hitting a little morse code key looking for other action figure collectors.
Yes, Mole Man would be a great choice and Hasbro can include 1 of 10 randomly packed Moloids with each Mole Man. Collect them all!
All other Dooms have been ruined for me by the Mezco. The only way to improve it is to give it more articulation, but Doom doesn't really need much so that's a nitpick. I suppose another wire in the cape would be nice, but he's so impressive otherwise that, too, is a nitpick.

Since it is so great is why I have issues with it. I don't think any of the heads are perfect, either a little too big or not quite retro enough, and I was miffed that the articulation couldn't even do the poses in the solicitation photos. It was almost still worth the money, but that chest harness cannon is really a useless cost increaser.

I can understand this thought process - but for me, the second figure in a package - even if it duplicates a figure I already have provides fodder for a future custom project. Although in the case of Lilandra and Punisher those came with figures I didn't have in my collection at all - so those just bolstered the collection. Whereas with this deluxe Spidey so much of the perceived "extra value" is stuff that will go in a baggie, get tossed in a drawer and never be thought of again that it just isn't worth the extra cost at all. A second figure - even if unneeded in my collection can be repurposed as parts for something else. The bulk of accessories are fun for half a second and then useless to me.
And that's where I've landed with this... if this is the direction of the Maximum series - increased cost focused on plussing out the add ons and accessories - that appeals to a totally different collector than me. And that's fine. Those collectors need love too.
But at the end of the day I display my figures one way and tend to leave them like that so all the extra stuff is just... extra stuff. So it doesn't add much value to the product at all. It's actually a thing about Super7 with their Ultimates vs their Deluxe figure offering... I'd honestly much prefer to pay the $20 less and skip the two extra heads that I'll never use and all of the extra goo-gahs and silly pack-ins that fill up the plastic tray but are totally impractical to display on my shelf. I know the manufacturer probably prefers to sell me the more expensive item - the profit margin is bigger I'm sure, but the bang for my buck isn't really there. I pay the premium for Ultimates because for most of those characters a cheaper option will never be coming. With the Marvel characters I can be confident a cheaper option will be available so I can just skip this entire SKU in all likelihood.

One of my biggest collecting regrets is selling my original Legends Doom with custom soft goods for the Mezco Doom without having it in hand first. The Mezco Doom radicalized me against Mezco. I loathe that figure.
The Legends Doom is good, but I'd like a classic version with butterfly joints.
The extra detailing they gave the Legends Doom is fine, and is probably comic-accurate to some depiction, but I don't really want or need the extra detailing, even though I bought it in both shades of green. A strictly classic Doom would be...fantastic.
