Yeah this is one of my gripes with ML in general. It would be nice to get heroes with more than a boring mugshot every time.
If they were doing a one off chest piece for Luke to allow the open shirt why didn’t they just sculpt his shirt with the chest piece. Would solve the articulation and arm hole problem.
I’d like to know who signed off on the overlay/torso combo and why, because I can’t imagine anyone honestly believing that was a good idea.
I think it could have looked decent with smaller holes, but then would they have limited movement? Maybe, if he had butterfly joints, but he doesn’t.
Yes, smaller holes would have definitely helped. I’m not sure how much that would have hindered movement. I keep thinking that it would be fine as long as the arm holes were the same size as the holes in the torso, but I’m not even a customizer, much less a designer. It’s probably safe to say that the holes ended up being bigger than they were supposed to be. I still don’t think overlays are a good choice for a shirted character, but then I’ve never been a big fan of overlays vs sculpted details to begin with.
Fun to read your reviews, Norm! This is a great looking wave.
Luke appears to be a significant improvement over the Toy Biz version, but still not perfect apparently.
How is Luke compared to Safari Jacket Wonder Man? I thought Wonder Man turned out great. I was expecting Luke Cage to be similar in terms of design.
@akatsuki Thanks! Wonder Man and Power Man do share some similarities in how they're engineered. WM isn't necessarily designed better, but his flaws don't seem to bother me in the same way. First, the holes for the arms. WM's seem to fit better around his shoulders, revealing just a bit of blue undershirt. They both have no ab hinge, just the pivot joint at the waist. PM's actually works better than WM's, whose range is severely limited. WM has better proportions, while PM seems to have an undersized head. PM has better range of motion in the ankles, better than most current ML. For some reason, WM looks less like unpainted plastic, while PM looks very much like unpainted plastic. Maybe it's something about the high contrast between the yellow and black, or the yellow and his brown skin tone?
I'm no cheerleader for Toy Biz, but there are some things about their Power Man Luke Cage that just didn't get surpassed here. They've still got the ab hinge, the strong head sculpt with lots of attitude, but also got the ugly ball hips and silly slap hand with ugly articulated fingers. I was hoping for a figure that wouldn't cause me to look backward, but here I am.
@normdapito While it’s slightly disappointing to read these observations ahead of receiving my pre-order, I’m still very excited to have this wave in hand. There’s a strong possibility we’ll see another shot at this Power Man considering Hasbro repackaged the T-Bolts Cage for the Defenders pack redraft. Maybe we’ll get a 2.0 along with a FA Iron Fist that improves on this latest figure. Or, at the very least, we’ll see the inclusion of a more emotive head sculpt with a Danny offering. When I saw they’d chosen black pants for Luke, rather than blue, I immediately cringed at the idea of a color edit being part of a package deal for the two. Having the benefit of the knowledge you’ve shared, now I actually want another with the tweaks added.
For whatever reason folks who receive their figures first skew towards negative.
I bet this wave ends up being a hit overall. The nitpick are... intense early.
I can't wait to get these figures. Even gamer Iron Man
Bummer about Luke's ab articulation and boot swivel.
DD and Elektra DD look great together. I may have to check out a YouTube review to see their articulation schemes. I'm almost always a one-figure-per-character person, but I do love the Zdarsky DD run. I could justify it.
@tsi I haven't tried heating him up yet to see if it will help, but not much movement right out of the box. It could be my figure being overly tight.
Oh, my mistake. I thought you were saying he didn't have torso articulation at all. I remember the Hasbro team highlighting that in one of the panels. Sounds like it is extremely limited, though.

I think of it as a public service. I think we, as a community, generally agree on major flaws. I'd rather temper my expectations going in than be disappointed when I actually get stuff in hand.
Then again, I've never really understood complaining about the complaining. If you like it anyway, more power to you.

They're saving money on paint by doing it this way.
Overlays and plastic parts instead of paint has been the way to go for a little while now with ML. I think the overlay is fine, but they should have made the holes for the shoulders smaller. That's the solution. There's no reason for the gaps. This is the figure's biggest and most conspicuous flaw. I can get past the non-characteristic expressionless face on a somewhat tiny head. I can get past the lack of ab crunch. But the shirt holes didn't need to be a problem. Not sure why it's something they didn't see.
This wave will not be at Target/Walmart right...Or did I make that up?
@normdapito Dan Yun said just this wave would not be at Walmart or Target. They are both still carrying Marvel Legends in 2024.
