Giant-Man:

5,518 / 10,000 (+34) 55.18% of funding goal with 19d 17h left.

Well back to a more standard double digit daily gain. I guess people are slightly paying more attention again.

Having a separate hobby account doesn't equal not being honest with your significant other.   Please don't assume that's what this subject is about.

In my case, my wife fully knows I blow lots of money on this stuff.  There's no deception there.  It's been like that for our entire 22 year relationship.  A separate account just makes balancing "fun money" with "life money" easier.  I'm willing to bet that's the case for others here who do the same, but who knows!

Oh we keep separate accounts for our personal wants as well, I think that's a good practice! I was referring to some of the other more elaborate gamesmanship that was described.

Playing those sorts of games with my SO about our finances sounds less than ideal. Much prefer the version where we just talk to each other about stuff.

That would be great, but my significant other has multiple neuroses about finances.  I saw it right away when we started dating.  We're categorized at the low end of the upper-middle class, but a day doesn't go by when she's complaining about how much we're spending on food and other essentials.  We live relatively modestly, but quite comfortably.  We're not in a high-cost area, and we don't really spend much money.  The first 7 years I knew her I spent almost zero money outside of expenses, although during the decade before that I had dropped quite a lot of money into comics.  She's CONSTANTLY playing the lottery and imagining what she would do if she won it.  She sees money as freedom from all responsibility, and despite us having absolutely zero financial burdens she just can't stop obsessing about how much everything costs and how much we're spending.  There has never once been any situation where we can't afford whatever we need and almost everything we want, but the obsession still never stops.

Her dad is a retired stockbroker, and he doesn't understand her obsession with finances either given that she has no issues.  I've discussed this with him and her, with her current retirement fund manager and her together in the same room, but none of it had much of an effect.  She's constantly worried about how much money I have in comics (which have all outperformed the usual mutual fund APY of 7.5%), how much in action figures, how much she has in every item everywhere in the house, etc.  On the one hand I'd prefer her to be overly frugal than overly spendthrifty.  On the other I want her to stop sweating the small stuff.  Meh, it is what it is, and nobody seems to be able to change it.

So I'd love to be able to talk about finances, but I've never found a way to do it rationally when every gallon of milk bought stresses her out.  😐

Fair enough, and apologies for any aspersions my comments cast your way. That sounds difficult to deal with, but it seems like you've chosen a path of managing it the best you can while still maintaining respect for and a good relationship with your SO, rather than resenting them or anything of the sort. Props for that!

Speaking of figures as an investment, if Giant-Man barely makes it to funding I might consider backing another. Galactus seemed widely speculated after the Sentinel was such a hit, and if GM does relatively small numbers I wouldn't be surprised if his aftermarket price shoots up between now and when he ships.

I don't watch the markets for Sentinel and Galactus weekly, but I do check every 3 to 6 months.  Aren't they mostly selling for their original price plus another $100 which would mostly get eaten up by shipping?  The Haslabs that had far lower quantities bought like Khetanna and Unicron sell for 2x to 4x the backing price, but Sentinel, Galactus, Razor Crest, etc that were backed by 15K+ people don't seem to sell for much more than the original price.  Because of that I see them as likely to appreciate in the long term of 5 to 10 years or more, but it's looking like there's not much return for holding an extra for under 5 years.  I'm expecting the same for Giant-Man.

I don't know, I think the aftermarket on Haslabs has kind of tanked.  You'll probably get your money back but the profit might only be like $20-$50.  These things are expensive to ship so you'll have to find a local buyer and local always means less (for me anyway).  I was able to make about $120 on the Sentinel but the Skystriker only netted me like $60 and I got pretty lucky with a local guy.  I am regretting backing two HISS and decided to only grab one Dragonfly.  If you've got the space to sit on these big boxes for 5-10 years then maybe the return will be pretty solid for me the stress of selling ASAP before the value tanks further hasn't been worth the minor return.

Back to the topic of selling and being taxed, the problem I run into is that a lot of my hobby money usually goes towards vintage stuff in lots.  So like I'll buy 20 80's GI Joes to get the three I need and a handful of accessories.  How the heck do I itemize that when calculating my losses?  It can't be as simple as "20 figures for $200 is $10/figure" because that figure has three accessories, that one has none, and that figure is missing an arm.  But then if you try to itemize them based on the actual values at the time of purchase it comes in over what I paid because that's just how lots work.

This is why I'm sitting on like 300 GI Joes...

I think if they could tease a First Appearance Wasp with multiple heads (Pointy helmet and hairstyles), it would go a long way to helping the HasLab make it's goal.

I would also like to see a new Yellowjacket teased.

FA Wasp is a no-brainer. They know it. We know it. They know we know they know it.

My comment wasn't in response to having separate bank accounts. Hell, I wouldn't have it any other way. I think hiding purchases can be a bit shady and get you into more trouble than explaining yourself upfront.

This is how things usually go for me:

Me: I have a package coming today.

SO: Okay, I will look out for it. What is it?

Me: It's X item.

SO: Cool. I have heard/not heard of that character.

She trusts me to make good decisions for our household/my collection/our finances. I usually talk to her about items I'm unsure about, too. It's good to have a sounding board.

Nice, it sounds like you have a good healthy relationship, and definitely agree that hiding purchases of any kind is bad.   It's actually pretty cool that your SO has enough interest to know characters and the stuff you're interested in.   Mine sees them all as "plastic trash", and wouldn't care to know the difference between Darth Vader and Mickey Mouse lol

but luckily she knows how important they are to me and doesn't want to impede on that - for us, having our own separate interests has actually really helped maintain a great relationship. 😎

I gotcha brother!  Yeah hiding things is definitely no good.  I will say that while I don't hide anything, I definitely don't feel a need to announce every purchase either.  Unless it's something I'm super excited about and just want to talk about it, like saving up for a kickstarter and such.

If I were a betting man I would have bet Yellowjacket would have been in the 2024 annual Avengers BAF wave sold at big box stores. That just seemed like a given.

-A character we all want redone.

-A teaser for Giant-Man shipping.

-The yellow and black costume is striking enough so it might catch the eye of a kid or parent who has no idea who he is and buy it because it looks cool.

-The annual Avengers BAF waves usually have at least one classic male Avenger in a classic costume.

-Besides his bio energy "wings" or whatever they are called, Yellowjacket is a standard figure on a standard buck - very cost effective so he wouldn't take up much budget, plus he's not bulky so a BAF piece like a large leg or a good portion of Korvac's cyborg box (hint, hint Hasbro) would fit easily into the packaging.

Well - I would have lost money since the Void BAF wave is the 2024 Avengers wave...

...unless there are 2 Avengers waves for 2024. The Void wave being a cobbled together wave to fill the "void' of delayed and/or cancelled MCU product. Plus if the rumor list is true, Count Nefaria, Herald Thor and one of the Iron Man armors have to go somewhere... and this wave would likely be where Ikaris goes since he has more of a connection to the Avengers than Crystar does.

Or I could just be spouting nonsense and Yellowjacket is in a 2-pack or single card Fan Channel offering.

What you describe is spot on, but I do believe this will change once the MCU films for FF and X-Men release. I backed both of those Haslabs for multiple extras (and Giant man) for exactly this reason. If one can spare the expense, I view the Haslabs as the only true investment one can make in MLs, but only if it doesn't put you in the red and you have the space to sit on them until the right moment presents itself.

Great point and I also thought of that when I bought three Sentinels and Galactus, but I forgot about their forthcoming MCU appearances during this thread.  Giant-Man should have no such bump though given that he's already had his big splash in Civil War and appeared in several other movies after that.

Do you expect Giant-Man to move over 15,000 copies?

@enigmaticclarity Yeah, Giant Man not so much, but I only nabbed 2, whereas I did the max allowed on the Sentinel and Galactus. I gave one of the Sentinels to my buddy as a Christmas gift, and if he doesn't order one, I might hook him up again with Pym – should we cross the finish line. It pisses his wife off because she can't complain about the expenditure because he didn’t buy it. LOL
