Yeah, that's among the most left field rationales for not backing a HasLab I've read. Literally.
I wasn’t a fan of the avengers before the MCU so I associate black widow as a core avenger. I was an X-men kid growing up.
It’s 100% absolutely Hasbro’s fault for the Black Widow being unavailable. Hasbro knows or should know that target and walmart are terrible at distributing exclusives. Hasbro chose to make an exclusive deal with Target for the black widow figure.
Hasbro didn’t need to make a deal for that figure to be exclusive to Target. Given an exclusive deal, Hasbro could have included terms in the contract that said “if you are unable to meet customer demand, then you lose exclusivity license and we are allowed to sell them on Hasbro Pulse”
The idea that Hasbro is not the least bit at fault for people being unable to buy the black widow is laughable.
The idea that Hasbro didn’t know people would want black widow with the giant man is laughable. Her new figure is in all of the HasLab promo pics.
Store exclusives need to go away. They’re ruining collecting for me. The exclusive Walmart Duplico MOTU origins figure being unubtanium made me stop collecting the entire line. I’m not selling what I have but I realize I don’t need more origins figures. I’m either getting all of them or I’m not.
Exclusives do suck. We know that, we've been over this topic many, many times. I hate them.
We also know that Hasbro has zero control over what a retailer does with their product once it is handed off to the retailer. Just as we know that retailer exclusives aren't going away as they are part of the incentive big box stores demand in return for them committing to the entire product line and giving it shelf space.
Wanting a Black Widow to go with Giant-Man is perfectly reasonable. Saying Giant-Man is contingent on a store exclusive is... pretty strict. Especially considering that Black Widow is one of Marvel Legends' evergreen characters that has seen about 10 releases over the past few years and will see more down the line. Guaranteed. Probably on this same body, which in no scenario whatsoever will shelved and not released again.
Honestly... breaking myself of that 'completist' mentality was super hard. But once I was able to do it - and it took baby steps, first giving up MCU figures, then deciding I only needed one version of a costume or look, etc - collecting has gotten much less stressful. And now, if I don't get the store exclusive I don't worry about it a ton. If I decide that I absolutely have to have it, more likely than not it will be available at a reasonable price later. It's much more peaceful for me on this side of that line.

I was never a completist, but I can understand how it feels when these figures have some kind of hold over you and you are finally able to break yourself of it. I get that feeling when I unload a big lot and put some extra $$$ in my pocket. It's a really good feeling.....so liberating!
I have extras of Widow that I can trade or sell.
Literally no one would want Giant Man without the new Black Widow.
What? I'm pretty sure Black Widow didn't join the Avengers until years later, meanwhile Giant Man was on it since the early days (and at the start as Ant-Man). I don't think most people need one to enjoy the other.
I'll agree that the tiers aren't very enticing if someone is on the fence. But I think at the price point, the two heads are literally just extras. Folks are either in on Giant-Man for $200 or not.
My wife just did a full audit and told me to track October toy buying.
I'm out.
Oooooohh, what did she find that got you kicked out? 😉
Giant-Man:
5,484 / 10,000 (+5) 54.84% of funding goal with 20d 16h left.
OOF-FA!!! First single digit daily gain of the project. Looks like Giant-Man is currently sitting in that "out of sight, out of mind" position. It should still fund, but it is definitely going to drag for a while. I think the ML team needs to do something to draw eyeballs back on the project. Maybe reveal some related figures that can release around the time Giant-Man ships next year? Hopefully they have something to show at NYCC.
Definitely in the doldrums of the funding period right now - completely agree that something to get people talking about it would be nice to see - another round of great photos by Shooting the Galaxy, some related figures, or even better announce an FA Avengers box set!
Yeah, that's rough. Related figure releases or adding an additional tier with that much-asked for 1st Appearance Wasp and/or regular size Giant-Man in matching outfit might be called for. I'm really starting to get the feeling that it's the stretch figures that drive these campaigns moreso than the offering itself.
I think that FA Wasp would definitely motivate more people, but a 6" version of this Giant Man might actually dissuade more backers. Those who are overwhelmed by the HasLab's size might see a smaller version as an alternative and be done with it.
