I see in the Toyark forums that Galactus had more than 6,000 backers in the first 24 hours — and folks complaining that it was "slow" compared to the Sentinel's numbers (Didn't that hit the initial goal the first day? I feel like it did.)
Skimmed through the Hellcharger thread too — holy cow did Hasbro hit a nerve with that price. So much anger. I think Hasbro planned it out this time, dropping the $200 Giant-Man after the $500 Ghost. Most of the talk in the Hellcharger thread is the $350 price tag compared to the recently funded Hiss which was $300.
I found a comment that mentions that the Hellcharger was 37% funded in less than 24 hours.
Is this slow? Were other Haslabs 35% funded within 24 hours?
No. Just folks panicking, as they tend to do.
It was the same with the Sentinel and Galactus. This is already off to a good start.
Hellcharger had good starting momentum until it became about a million other things. By the end it was more about people feeling like they were sticking it to Hasbro for the price and tiers than it was about the actual offering. Truly felt like the mentality was that if people vehemently were offended by the project, then no one else should have it or want it.
That said, if the percent backed after the first day is comparable on Giant Man (a classic character) then perhaps it means the preference between classic and newer characters is equal... at least for the enthusiastic day 1 Legend collectors. Hmm.
Interesting that it stacks up to the Hellcharger's initial 24 hours. I would never say it was the primary factor, but I do think the negative campaign against the Hellcharger (by influencer types and regular people both) had a meaningful impact on its trajectory. Hopefully here we'll see that effect put to good use - I suspect even the influencer types who aren't interested at the least aren't going to work against it funding. Either way, 35% in 24 hours feels good to me. If they're smart they'll take advantage of PulseCon to show off some complementary product offerings (Janet) to increase the hype.
Man, don't tempt me with this. 😆 It's basically a Detolf and a half wide at twice the price. I'd think about replacing one of my cases with it or even just adding it to my current setup, but I'm wary of how the double doors would look in front of my figures.
Another one of your posts in this thread has me ready to tear my Avengers display apart, though:
While the HasLab figures have all been too big for my tastes (and my space), the Toy Biz Giant-Man appears tailor-made for Detolf shelves. If I can get my hands on the Toy Biz figure for a reasonable price next year...
Be tempted! Let the toys take over your life, and dedicate increasing amounts of space to them! I've had to stop myself from buying one or two of those. I like my Detolfs but they're too small and restrictive for some of the groupings I want to see together - those Avengers are crammed in there. But ultimately what I really want is to construct some custom shelving that has even fewer height/width restrictions while keeping some of the clean aesthetic you get with Detolfs/glass shelves.
Really hope they have some displays at PulseCon with Giant-Man surrounded by the other classic Avengers they've released over the years! Excited to see more pics of him in the coming weeks.
@enforcer Yeah, I wouldn't say this campaign is that comparable to the Hellcharger.
Going through the comments chronologically, people were hot (pun intended!) from the get-go when the $350 price was announced. There was a lot of negativity at the start and the influencers and such basically fanned the flames (I could do this all day!) throughout the campaign.
I don't see much of that with Giant-Man, most folks seem pretty accepting of the price tag despite the lackluster add-ons. I don't think it'll go super high (unless there's a surprise addition) but I'm sure it'll hit 10,000.
Personally, I don’t think Wasp needs to be here, there are plenty of other ways to offer her.
I agree, but I think much of the speculation about a 1st Appearance Wasp being in this campaign was due to her not being included in the overall Avengers 60th releases, which seemed like an oversight given her importance to the Avengers. So many of us (me at least) concluded they were saving her to go with the presumed Giant Man HasLab. Hoping she gets produced in the coming year along with Jarvis.
RE: the backers so far, looks OK, not great, but OK. I think the Hellcharger really took a big momentum hit when it didn't unlock the early-bird. Hard to compare by percentages, the Hellcharger unlocked at 9,000 right? So less people to be at 35% after a day, but a larger financial commitment. But that was an odd campaign in terms of "reaction" so not sure how predictive it might be of anything.
That pic from Dwight really shows how big this is.
This shows Giant-Man's progress as compared to other Haslabs.

Well, I’ll get it, but I’m firmly of the opinion this should have been a retail offering at about £135, and if people wanted to buy multiples for displaying the zombie and Skrull versions that’s a them thing.
Additionally I think they should have then recovered tooling costs by reusing the base figure for Goliath and then further adaptation for an MCU figure.
As stretch goals for making the figure better value, I couldn’t care less about the zombie and Skrull faces - maybe as one tier unlock but not two - I would have rather seen some bonus figures and accessories. For 200 I think they should at the very least offer this exact figure in 1:12 on the Vulcan body included in the base offering so that the figure immediately has a size-changing ‘action-feature’.
But still, I’ll get it, and at 24 inches he’s exactly the upper limit of how big I wanted him to be. If he had been the same height as the Sentinel or Galactus I think that would have been a dealbreaker, so glad they didn’t go that far.
@grumpymatt I think the people who whined all month last year about the figures being locked behind a paywall are definitely the reason they're not included here. Smart because it means they can't complain about the lack of figures this time. Gotta give the Hasbro team credit for that one 🙂
I don’t know if this would apply to Marvel or not, just because they work at the same company doesn’t mean they all can do the same things, but I believe the Joe team has said that they are able to someday use the HISS shell without all the electronics to put out different paint versions if they choose to, so if this campaign does well, it’s possible we will see several parts of this body reused, possibly not even as part of a Haslab. So much of the initial investment is required to make this the first time, so a future offering of Goliath or someone similar could be cheaper because a lot less is required to make it. But that depends on Hasbro and probably what the rodent overlords at Disney will allow.
Has anybody done an analysis on the pricing for this Haslab Giant Man up against the Bratz Giant Man?
Soon enough. It's only day 2.
You have to give the weird animosity time to grow to the point of hilarious comparisons.
Couple things:
- For those of you interested I have a running thread over on actionfigurenews.ca which goes back to July 2021 (so 2 years) and started around the time of Galactus. You can see the history of my updates there.
- Brian Brink is by far the gold standard for tracking the different Haslabs. I do this for s$%&s and giggles so I may not be the best tracker to follow. Brian Brink has it down cold.
- This seems to be a fairly average start to the Haslab. As others pointed out Galactus had a similar start and still funded. Although it did take him almost to the end of the funding period to fund. Then he took off. And Galactus had figures as tiers which by all accounts are the most desired tier options. I think we have been a bit spoiled with how fast recent Haslabs have funded, which is skewing our collective view of what is a "good" start to funding. The other thing to think on is a not stellar start (funded within 48 hours) means we do have to wait and see a lot longer which means more time to over analyze the project.
