Where does everyone think Crystar is show up:

BAF wave?

Fan Channel?

Retailer exclusive?

PulseCon?

it opened Pandora's Box of wondering what other characters we thought were off limits they might secretly have in the works.  Micronauts? ROM? Something what I haven't thought of?

I got into a number of discussions on Twitter and Facebook about this immediately after SDCC.   There is an enormous difference here in that Marvel created Crystar and has ALWAYS had the rights to reintroduce him in the comics and license him out for merchandise.    The other "off limits" characters like Rom and Micronauts are in fact owned by Hasbro -  just like Transformers and G.I. Joe, who also had popular Marvel Comics.

So for ROM and at least half the Micronauts team there would have to be an extra layer of licensing agreements between Marvel and Hasbro to include the characters in the Legends branding.

Hasbro can absolutely make figures of ROM, Acroyear and Captain Rann right now, just like they make GI Joe -  they just couldn't put them in Legends without an agreement from Marvel.   And Marvel likely wouldn't agree to that without some incentive to do so.

I know lots of people equate Crystar and ROM and the like - toys with comics -  but Crystar was created by Marvel comics and then brought to the toy company.   ROM and Micronauts were toys that were licensed to Marvel so they are not the same.

All is not lost -  Marvel seems to be releasing some reprinted ROM content in the near future,  so it's possible Marvel and Hasbro have negotiated something that could allow ROM to be included in the Legends line.   I certainly hope they get there eventually.     But even if they don't come to that agreement -  I wouldn't mind if Hasbro found a way to do their own stand alone releases for ROM and Micronauts that are Legends compatible but not Legends branded.

Crystar did indeed win SDCC.  This is a character I know nothing about and he looks unique enough that I'm probably going to pick him up just based on that.  In preparation, I went to my LCS and bought Crystar #1 to read up on him.  I don't know if it's for me.......it only lasted 12 issues.  But cool figure.

Based on posts from the SDCC thread it sounds like Dwight was asked about this very thing and said it was a headache to think about these characters since it meant having to get lawyers involved.

There was some intimation that Hasbro was at least considering the idea of releasing ROM and Micronauts in non-legends packaging to be able to get them out as figures without the licensing hurdles.    I guess we'll see.

I am ready to own Crystar, day one pre-order for me.

The original was one of my favorite figures as a kid.  This is hitting the nostalgia buttons HARD!

I'm suuuuuuper excited about Crystar, myself. Probably one of the ML figures I'm most excited about for the last couple of years.

Same here. This is a must-have for me. Just so many happy memories associated with the original figure and comics.

It makes me wish I had bought one of those giant belt buckles back in the day. The figure would look good posed atop such an item.

And I'm giddy for both.

Regarding the rights issues to ROM and the non-Marvel originated characters, I think we're well aware of the hassle such a thing would undertake and the differences between their status and that of Crystar. But seeing a character like Crystar still sparks an ember of hope and excitement, even if it requires a Legends-adjacent non-Marvel line of similar figures. Of which I'd be 100% all-in, especially if handled by the Legends team.

I'm not clear at all why there's any hassle whatsoever between two companies that have had a profitable working relationship going back to the mid-90s can't agree on how to bring extremely-niche characters back so they can both get a piece of the shared pie.  For God's sake, Hasbro bought out the MicroNauts license in fucking 2009 and all we've gotten are goddamned plastic game miniatures.

Meanwhile, EAGLE Force has gotten me 5 Time Travelers in just the past year alone.

The hassle all stems from these being big companies who have their own legal departments. It all requires lawyers which entails added cost because lawyers are expensive. It should be simple, but it's not. It even happens with companies technically owned by the same entity, like how Warner/Discovery drafts contracts with itself when it wants to put Looney Tunes on Max or one of the Adult Swim shows. It's maddening, but it's a world with lawyers and can you imagine what the world would be like without lawyers?! Insert shudder here.

PulseCon is a week away. Do you think our buddies will reveal any more news on Crystar - like if he's a single carded figure, in a BAF wave or multipack?
