I have plenty of Legends that are definitive versions of the character/look. That doesn't mean someone couldn't make something along the lines of a $100 import and it wouldn't be a better figure, but plenty of Legends come out that nail it. Since we're on the subject of villains - Dr. Doom, Red Skull, Ultron, classic Dormammu, Super Skrull, MODOK, and Arnim Zola all spring to mind.

I don't disagree that Hasbro has failed to do GG and Loki justice though. The Toy Biz Green Goblin is still in my display. Retro carded Loki hides, embarrassed, behind his properly-executed evil brethren.

They fall into several different categories for me. Something like:

  • Flawless/never need another - admittedly, I have very few of these. Black Widow (Target exclusive), Ultron, and Red Skull are all examples.
  • Close enough - most of the figures I own would fall into this category. I have a few problems with the existing figure, but it would take a lot to convince me to upgrade. Looking at Kingpin, Nightcrawler, and Thing (Walgreens).
  • Needs some work - these figures all have a fatal flaw, but for now, they're filling a hole in my collection. Kitty Pryde (Juggernaut wave), Mystique, and Rogue (Pyro two-pack) all come to mind.
  • Wanted an upgrade yesterday - if Marvel Legends ended tomorrow, I'd commission an upgrade on Monday. Green Goblin, Loki, Iceman, and Cable all come to mind.

Both these statements translate to "I buy them regardless" to me, without further context.

Example: Revealed Marvel Boy/ Justice. I am paraphrasing what the team said "should make New Warrior fans happy". How? The other figures were very early new warriors. This one was not. Close enough? Needs some work? On point but doesn't go with the team as released? Why do I need a $100 dollar import to finish what Hasbro started?

That annoys me.

Can we branch from Marvel? Cause Power Rangers has quite a few. They didn't paint one of the exclusive figures helmet, and had to send out corrected ones to people who bought it in the mail. There was another figure that had 4 different versions and only 1 was accurate to the show. And they squashed the MMPR red helmet and only recently fixed it with newer releases. And for their definitive end all be all MMPR figures, the green ranger dagger holster is completely wrong. I honestly don't even have time to go into everything they royally screwed on that line.

PR has issues all it's own, and yes, there are many.  I hear ya about the Green Ranger dagger holster, the Japanese suit is not just a black blade blaster holster, it has a fit all its own.  Was it cheap on Hasbro's part?  Lazy?  Probably both.  But the American version of the suit's holster actually does look like the Remastered.  The show probably just took the blade blaster holster and made it black just like Hasbro did.

Also:  Today is the 30th anniversary of the first episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.  I deem this off-topic post ACCEPTABLE!  🙂

I think it's been mentioned a couple times how lazy the recent Hasbro Lokis have been, but to my own tastes I would be very happy if they simply re-released the Disney+ MCU Loki figure with cleaner paint and a new, comic head sculpt, something Alex Ross inspired. It's all I'd want apart from a Simonson Loki, and I always see the character as kind of skinny and off-kilter anyway so that body really works for me.

I absolutely love the Byrne era F4 and I refused to buy the retro wave team. Marvel’s 1st family deserved way better.
And I cannot stand the translucent Human Torches. The dude was not see-thru, damn it.
Also, Sue on the Kate Bishop buck was a no-go for me. I had rejected nearly every female they put on that body.
And Reed was just boring with the fruit-by-the-foot fingers. Also every Thing I came across had something wrong with paint apps — either the white paint was messed up on his trunks; the orange shading was too sloppy looking; or each one of his eyes were looking in a different direction.

Those figures are definitely not perfect, but they are standard Marvel Legends, so you can't expect too much more than that. Plus it's not too likely they'll ever do that version of the team again, so I'm OK with the figures. They are no different than 75% of most other MLs. If you want something way better  with more unique sculpts, you'll probably have to hope that Mafex does that version of the FF, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

As for all the see-through Human Torch figures, I think they are going for an effect that if you put him in front of a light it will look like he's glowing.

Meh, I don’t think it’s way out there to believe they’ll revisit these costumes in the future. And it’s not that I need a more unique sculpt for them. I love the Thing figure; they just did a sloppy job with deco. Sue just looks pitiful with those boney legs and that busted face. Reed came with the lamest “power effects” to demonstrate his ability. And I get the whole “use lights on Torch” thing but it still just doesn’t look that good and doesn’t beat a classic, opaque Human Torch imo.. which is probably why they did translucent first. These 4 were subpar at best and I’m not one to buy characters/ costumes I’ve wanted just because they were made and might never again.

@stark-resilient now that was ugly enough that I passed and that’s my favorite armor. I heard the back isn’t right either?

The back is from the movie tie in video game

Making my first post on Nu-Fwoosh (which I hope gets better) just to say that Silver Centurion Iron Man will never be forgiven.

How do you feel about the "fixed" version on the WCA boxset? I wish I could swap those pauldrons onto the Walgreens one but I don't think the reds match.

What exactly did they "fix?" The head and neck is a hideous set up, the armor appears too slender because of the way they cut the torso to fit the shoulder pads, and the back is still from a video game that very few people played and even less liked.

Justice looks exactly like the costume the figure is based on. He doesn't fit with the already released New Warriors, sure, but I don't think it's a good example of an off-model figure. I don't know what you're referring to about the team's comments.

And if there's a company out there making higher-quality versions of even 5% of what ML covers, then we can talk. Acknowledging a figure is less than perfect doesn't mean I'd rather just not have that character represented.

For me, it was the Family Matters box set Scarlet Witch and the fan channel exclusive Tigra.   I am a life long fan of both characters, and to see such fantastic sculpts ruined by such hideous (to me) color schemes that were so obviously inaccurate to the source material was beyond frustrating for me.

Fortunately, I didn’t have to wait long for the retro carded Scarlet Witch and the WCA box set Tigra, both of which I absolutely love, but right or wrong, I will go to my grave thinking of that sequence of events as a deliberate and underhanded stunt on Hasbro’s part.  I completely understand the need for Hasbro to re-sell and re-use tools with limited applications, and I honestly don’t mind repaints and reuse.   I just think there are better and more honorable ways to go about doing it.

My hat’s off to those of you that don’t buy versions of your favorite characters that are disappointing to you in some way, shape or form that you just can’t get past.  I’m just not that patient or self disciplined, but I’m working on it.

It is still the biggest tragedy to me.  They didn't really "FIX" anything, but they did make a VERY small improvement.  The Pauldrons are a little wider.  Not quite wide enough, but better. That's it.

The rest is still the biggest kick in dick in the line to me.

For 11 of the last 12 years, I was with you. I could only display about five figures at a time, so why bother buying anything that wasn't at least an 8/10? Last year I bought a house, so things changed. All of my figures are on display. Now I'm with H-Bird.

There are so few holes in my collection that, yes, I will buy the next Psylocke I see. I will buy the next Magik or X-23. Because I don't own those characters at all, and it bothers me every time I look at my collection. To Hasbro's credit, there are very four holes left (the other is Iron Fist, if you're curious). While I was willing to be selective about costume choice or execution in the past, now I just want to fill in the gaps. Except for Psylocke. I'm not buying that fucking ninja swimsuit costume ever again.

What has changed is what I'm willing to replace, which is what I was getting to in my post. If Hasbro expects me to replace my Green Goblin, Kitty Pryde, Kingpin, or Black Widow, the new version must be better than the figure I own. For some, that's a low bar. For others, it's going to take some doing. Win my dollars, Hasbro. I know you can.

I don't think opaque plastic looks right for Torch either. I'm not sure what the perfect version of that character would look like for me. Maybe an opaque figure with a thin transparent layer over top of it? I dunno, something like that is way out of Hasbro's depth anyway.

@vwbeetle I tend to agree with you. I don't know what the right way is with the Torch. Maybe a mix of semi-translucent with translucent effects?

I happen to agree with everything you said. I hate Sue's butter-face, and Reed's lame spaghetti fingers, and that clear Human Torch does not quite accomplish the effect that Hasbro thinks it does. I would rather have one painted more like the ToyBiz Wave 2 figure. I've just learned to temper my expectations I guess, because if history is any indication, it's likely the best versions of the Byrne FF we're going get (at least from Hasbro). Sometimes they nail it, sometimes they phone it in. It's kind of a "take it or leave it" situation with them most of the time.

I almost skipped the training suit team sets because the straps were too high. It bothered the shit out of me. But I did end up buying them, cause I was gonna see if I could move the straps. In person it doesn't look as bad though. The pics I absolutely hated.

And I did skip the entire retro F4 wave too for alot of the above reasons. I have the Walgreens set and it's good enough for me.

Torch is definitely a conundrum, just like Ice Man. No matter what they do it won't ever look right, at least with their budget. But at least they're being consistent with him. And fire effects in general. Basically every Ghost Rider has translucent fire, aside from one of the old Toy Biz ones. Even the bike is translucent. I don't think it looks too bad. But it definitely isn't perfect. But again, how do you do fire? It's really hard. Iceman being translucent makes a little more sense cause, yknow, ice is see through usually. But that's not how he actually looked in basically anything. The old Iceman figures way back when they were using metal pins were all see through as well. That's kinda just how they've been doing things.

I need to add that quote to my signature along with “The only standards that I hold Hasbro to are the ones they set themselves.”
