As far as Rachel, I couldn't agree more. As Beamish said, Hasbro's clearly using her as bait for the collectors who are planning to close up shop once they complete Excalibur.

So we finally got Wolfsbane - I didn't hear anyone say, upon opening her, "That's it - my shelf is complete! It's been fun, y'all, but I'm out!"

Did anyone hear that from anyone?

Not Wolfsbane, but other characters, yes.

It's hard for me to imagine anyone waiting for Rahne isn't also waiting for Rachel. (Wolfbane's also one of my least favorite mutants, so it's hard for me to imagine anyone getting that excited for her, but that's beside the point.)

I agree with a lot of these points. It's crazy, when I look at my shop list for the past two years it's over 80% re-dos. Sometimes minor changes or new accessories that replace or offer improvements to the original.

Warbird, Iron Fist, Phoenix, Prowler, Quicksilver (for the head), Taskmaster, the list goes on. And you know it's only a matter of time before we get a classic blue pants Luke Cage. On one hand I'm thankful for the availability of the improvements, but man the ratio of old to new is high.

I don't think of a totally different costume as a redo. That is the 1st classic Iron Fist since Toybiz days. I do think the close but not quite costume choices are intentional.  As gross as it is I might still take another Quicksilver on the blue body again with the painted neck and better facial sculpt. They got us on a string and they know it.

I might be in the minority here but I absolutely consider a different costume still being a repeat of a character.

I try very hard to only keep one version of any character in my collection as a general rule. Iron Man is the obvious exception. I do have quite a few "multiverse variants" like AOA, for example though. There are times where I struggle to only pick one version and it can honestly drive me a little crazy.

So you're happy with the blue and yellow Banshee? Why have Marvel Girl and Phoenix figures?

Yeah - see,  for me and my display I'm happy to get any legitimately different canon look for a character.   My team displays are a sort of 'through the ages' panorama with different line ups and different costumes,      Although I draw some lines with very minor costume details changes where it was more an artists preference than really a new distinct look.     But training suit Banshee occupies a very different place in my display than would green and yellow suit Banshee.     Just like black and silver X-Force Warpath has a different spot than blue and red X-Force Warparth

@derrabbi I'm fine with the blue and yellow Banshee, honestly and I had been fine with the green/yellow that I had before that. The new deluxe Phoenix will be my new Jean when it comes out and I use the old early Hasbro green/yellow version of Rachel as my Marvel Girl rather than any Jean version.

Some upgrades are nice of course, but I'd much rather have an all new character whenever possible. I don't want to have to turn over my entire collection every few years just because of new features like pinless joints as an example. I've been doing this for over 20 years and I HATE buying the same character over and over even though I do always want the best version.

I'm a character completionist, meaning I will buy one version of every single character they make but I rarely keep more than one costume for any individual character.

I do feel like that distinction between what's a redo vs what's new definitely makes this conversation messy every time we have it (so like, every month). Power Man and Iron Fist are great examples. Technically, they've been done in those costumes (nearly 20 years ago by Toy Biz). They've also been made by Hasbro in other looks. But no one can seriously argue they didn't need to be made in their classic looks.

I still feel like the line is closer to 50/50 redos and new characters, but I admit I haven't done the numbers. But, for strictly never-before-seen characters, in this year alone we have:

  • Death's Head
  • Destiny
  • Count Nefaria
  • Whiplash
  • Jack O'Lantern (the previously made ones were different characters under their pumpkins)
  • Hallow's Eve
  • Last Stand Spider-Man
  • Assassin Spider-Man
  • Daimon Hellstrom
  • Bloodstorm
  • Lilith
  • Crystar
  • Justice
  • Power Princess
  • Namorita
  • Void (technically he might not be a new character, I suppose)
  • Lilandra
  • Goblin Queen
  • X-Cutioner
  • Black Winter
  • Ikaris
  • Red Widow
  • Wolfsbane

That list excludes the ones that I think basically qualify as being new - like Ka-Zar, Zabu, Dum Dum Dugan, and Blackheart - who are replacing extremely outdated figures from a lifetime ago. It's also only comic characters, and ignores all the MCU stuff.

That Namorita on there though.... that's the kind of shit they shouldn't get full credit for, the cheeky bastards.

Daimon Hellstrom's not even out yet and I already want a redo that isn't just satanic Namor in pants.

It's the straight re-dos I care about the least, followed by one issue looks like Broodverine or Cyborg Spidey just to get a "new" core character out there.

Uniform changes really don't count as re-dos to me - especially as the mutant and Avengers uniform changes often align with different configurations of the team and different eras, making those variants makes sense as each era/configuration likely represents "the era" for different collectors. What frustrates me is the not completing the eras they start so that by the time they get a group complete, the style and aesthetics of the line have often morphed.

And I really like true 1st Appearance looks - especially from the 60's - as often that is pretty different than later looks. (I still want a real Kirby-style FF and Ditko-style Dr Strange for instance)

About the top-10's and how many we get each year - I really wish we had a top-250 from 20 years ago based on people picking 100 figures. Because I honestly think there would be a decent number of characters not yet made from that list, and 100+ characters that didn't sniff the top-250 have been made. I can't prove that, and of course new character are introduced, and existing characters take on mor prominence, so that wouldn't be the only list to go from. but when we say someone like Rachel or Skurge or Warriors Three have only been top-10 for recent years, I am thinking they would have made that 250 list....

This could,  nay should, end up as the most "liked" post on Fwoosh.
