The speculation is making my head spin. The status quo for the last, what, 18 years(?) has been Hasbro making Marvel action figures. Expect that to continue.

@tsi I feel like to some degree this is folks just filling air-time between now and the next slate of release previews we get. Sort of like how when the first image of a superhero costume in a new movie comes out folks will take it apart on a molecular level because they don't have much else to talk about and what they really want is the movie (end product).

If the license stays with Hasbro, cool. I feel like a lot of the releases lately, even ones I haven't bought, have been really cool (got the new Hulkbuster and Death's head staring back at me on the desk right now). And I think a move towards stuff that is sort of it's own display in a bundle (new Kang, new Phoenix) will probably keep me coming back. If the rumors about a Spidey with a dio piece are true I'm almost certain to pick that up, and I might even give the Hulk a shot.

And if the license moves, also fine. I've got the option to step off the line if I feel like it's time to stop that collection, or I can continue if new license holders bring something good to the table.

IF (a big if) the license were to go somewhere else, the new company would almost certainly want to make a play to buy existing resources off of Hasbro. Taking over what Hasbro currently does with Marvel toys would be a huge undertaking - just ML alone takes a ton of work. Unless they fully intended to start over, a new entrant would want to bring over some staff, purchase molds, etc to give themselves a standing start. There's only a handful of companies out there who can even consider making Marvel figures and toys at the scale Hasbro does - for that reason alone it seems unlikely the license is going anywhere.

Anyone old enough to remember the switch from Toy Biz to Hasbro? The rush to get a bunch of stuff out. The concern over what the line would turn into. Those initial garbage waves which included Toy Biz body molds.

What a time.

The Toy Biz to Hasbro transition is exactly why I would give a new company taking over the license the benefit of the doubt.  Those Hasbro early days were DARK.  Then the switch to the 3 3/4" line and the dropping of Legends.  But now look what we have now that they found their footing.  The only thing that would make me drop collecting Marvel figures entirely would be if it was the same situation we had with McFarlane and DC.  I'm not starting a new scale and if this should come to pass then I would like for whatever comes next to be able to slot into my Legends collection.

I remember it well. I was a fresh college grad during that time so the limited releases worked out ok for me since I didn't have much spending money. I was living and working in rural Oregon when the Nemesis wave released - I remember scouring the one local Wal-Mart over and over until I found it. At the time I was so grateful to have new releases even though those are easily some of the worst figures ever made in the line.

This sums up my feelings perfectly. Well said.

Heh, I think we switched coasts. I was in Florida at the time. Now I'm in Washington.

The Toy Biz-Hasbro transition went about as poorly as possible. Hasbro didn't find its footing until at least 2012.

@jtmarsh And I dig all that stuff.  While X-Men '97 Cable should be a dream figure for myself, I think they could do him at Deluxe with all sorts of belts, guns, shoulder pads etc. to basically make whatever look you wanted for him.  Iceman or Iron Man with removable armor, there's a lot of possibilities for fun if they go for it.

But for me, with guys like Spidey and Hulk, it's gotta a core figure that interests me and that includes paint.  If it's sculpts we have already just with added accessories then I'm holding on to my cash.  Easy pass.  I want them to be ambitious with what they do.

It took me nearly a decade to embrace Hasbro after they took over the license. I was refusing to replace old Toy Biz figures with Hasbro upgrades for at least that long. I bought new characters but that was it until probably 2017. I was a little late to the party. LOL! However I hope that Hasbro does not lose or give up the license any time soon.

Now McFarlane on the other hand? I hope they lose or give up the DC license as soon as possible, but I don't see that happening.

This discussion reminds me quite a bit of when the rumor was spreading that Mattel were losing the rights to MOTU. A bitter ex-employee implied it was a strong possibility, fans panicked enough that the team addressed it and the fans then picked apart what they said looking for loopholes that would mean the line still was ending, and then nothing changed. Maybe I’m wrong, but if the line changed companies, I can imagine a LOT of people deciding that’s their jumping off point. Does a new company want to start over completely with that level of investment on top of the exponential rights cost? When Mattel got WWE, they were the bigger company who gained a strong IP. Who would that be in this case? And if someone else wanted to make comparable product, they’re also making skippable product. Unless it’s remarkably better, are people going to buy all these things again that are also designed to blend with the products they’re replacing? It’s almost like Hasbro is the best choice for everyone at this point at the partnership level. Money is money but changing what has been for so long is also a chance to fail, is it worth the risk?

I think it's a little different on the speculation here cause mostly what is being speculated really is what Hasbro wants to do in the future. If they decide they don't want to make figures anymore, then by default that means the end of Hasbro Marvel Legends. But no one really knows if that's the endgame or not. We are all just guessing, but I think it's a valid concern. If Hasbro wants to make figures, I doubt Marvel Legends goes anywhere else. Hasbro only loses it if Hasbro is done producing figures

I’ve heard that the current dope in charge has given people that idea, I guess I just don’t buy it. I don’t know much about tabletop games but even if that’s very lucrative for them, why give up a market you have an incredibly strong presence in? The dip for Marvel and Star Wars is IMO tied to the decisions being made regarding the content produced and not the product, the product just suffers by association. Joe is doing very well, why license it out instead of keeping that success for yourself? Who would take it? There’s no guarantee of continued success in other hands. I don’t know enough about TF to speak on it but it still seems successful. I know you can’t ever count out DUMB but it seems so shortsighted to just take a check and cut yourself out of an industry you’re one of the top names in so you can rely one one revenue source instead of multiple.

Hasbro isn’t allowed to lose the license until I get yellow costume Daredevil from the She-Hulk show.

And I get my Swordsman & Mantis 2-pack and Skurge, PantherCult gets M'Baku, Thor-El gets the Warrior's Three and SDcomics gets Jim Hammond Human Torch and Toro.
