I've said I'd stop every time a line has switched scales/companies since the 80's. I haven't.
Toybiz LOTR figures. TB went nuts with this license going deep, DEEP into the cast of characters and army builders.
Yeah, when that line was happening, I was single with no kids, with relatively low rent, and one of the best paying jobs I've ever had, and I went ALL in on that line. It was amazing. Now I just have the Witchking and Gandalf, heh.

A line jumping to McFarlane is a definite jumping-off point for me. I went all-in on DCUC, and love them still. But bailed with McFarlane's line because I hate the scale, hate the sculpting, hate the joint setup, and REALLY hate the rubber diapers. And if Legends makes a similar leap, then I'd walk away from that as well.
Hasbro stumbling, but ultimately going all in on keeping Legends consistent with Toy Biz was smart for them, tough for collectors (on some of the quality) but at least the years were lean on releases - so I'm sure other things filled the void. That's right around when I started buying every SOTA Street Fighter and NECA Resident Evil release. No I don't think I'd take on anything else to replace Legends.
If some other company got the license and kept the figures consistent, I'd probably continue. The second they go from DCUC to McFarlane... I'd be able to drop it easily. Might pick up the odd Wolverine or Spider-Man if they did something fantastic... good articulation and no diaper.
Currently in bins I have 65-70% of DCUC including the Superheroes stuff that was compatible. I also forgot I got every single Comic Book Heroes figure to fight my Toy Biz Legends withdrawal. I'm sure I have a couple other lines just stored away that I should really consider parting with at some point.
I get in real trouble when brands I like trade license holders and both do a pretty good job.
Marvel Legends--Toybiz or Hasbro? I think both have pros and cons. There are figure examples I really like for each.
DC--Mattel or McFarlane? Ditto.
The thing is, I don't NEED to rebuy Marvel or DC twice over. I also am not one to jettison stuff just because it's "old" so "upgrading to the new model" doesn't always work for me.
With stuff like GI Joe it's easier because the difference between vintage and 6" is night and day. I also have no problem keeping my Power Rangers Lightning Collection and my 90's flip head stuff because, again, completely different figures. But if company A does a 6"-7" Spider-Man and company B does a 6"-7" Spider-Man, there's not going to be.a whole world of difference and if both are on their game, they're both going to be adequate. In a perfect world I could just pick one.
I plan to keep collecting ML if only for the fact that I still love the MCU. As long as there are new movies and shows, I'm going to want figures, especially once they really get around to the X-Men. As far as comic figures go, at this point I'm very satisfied with my collection and only feel like there are a few major needs that haven't been made. Even so, I can fill some of that gap with customs.
@ctv Right. I'm still into the movies, and I'm actually really excited for Thunderbolts*, heh. but I am already resisting the urge to collect them all. I have a focus for the shelves and I gotta stick to that. But when they finalyl dive into mutants, it's gonna be on big time for me.
If Hasbro stopped Legends, I actually wonder if another firm would start up right again in the same scale or if they would have a gap of a couple of years and maybe launch a new line in 5" or something else. While scale and style continuity in a new line would appeal to collectors, from a business perspective they'd likely want to jump in with a few waves of heavy hitters and differentiate themselves, especially on the comic side.
Marvel might try to split the brand between the MCU license and the comic license at some point. The MCU license could continue to a new company and keep the 1:12 scale somewhat easily as all the figures are "new" for each film anyway.
@ru1977 I've finally learned to rein myself in. I've only pre-ordered Joaquin Torres Falcon from Captain America: Brave New World because I already have the Sam Wilson Cap they already did, and no space for Red Hulk. For Thunderbolts they'll have to make really compelling updates of the characters they've already done to make me want new figures of them instead of just wanting new characters, because they're already on the shelf.
@ctv yeah, it's funny how much discipline is needed for some of us. We have to set rules! I skipped a couple of the Thunderbolts so I'm excited for these versions of them (US Agent and Taskmaster), then of course need Bob, but if Yelena looks awesome they will be hard to pass up. And really I shouldn't get any of them but I'm all about Dark Avengers so anything DA adjacent, like all of those characters, I give myself a pass. And that's why I'm terrible about my own rules.
I just keep buying every stupid thing my lack of willpower and restraint will allow.

This is the way.
If the line shifted scale or style, I'd call it quits. Otherwise, I don't plan to stop.
I'm a new Magik away from having a "complete" collection. There are additional characters I'd like to own or upgrade, but Magik is the last missing piece. Whenever they finally give us a new Illyana, I'll continue to upgrade what I have and tweak my collecting goals. I've been seriously collecting for the last 20 years. You all won't be rid of me that easily.
I'm sorry, but I don't buy Hasbro and McFarlane Toys trading Marvel and DC licenses any time soon. Granted, I could be wrong, but I don't think Hasbro would want to miss out on making the inevitable toylines for 'Avengers: Doomsday', 'Spider-Man 4' and/or 'Avengers: Secret Wars'. With all of the characters slated to appear and Multiverse variant characters they can make, I doubt Hasbro would want to hand the rights to McFarlane Toys and miss out on those blockbusters.
That said, if Hasbro does give the license to another company, I'd prefer it to be Playmates Toys or Jada Toys. The toys I've gotten from McFarlane have been too stiff to move and they don't have as many accessories per figure as I would like to see.
In the meantime, I hope Hasbro makes a new ongoing "Marvel Super Heroes" Retro wave or a "Marvel Universe" wave from the mid/late 1990s that releases new versions or re-releases previous of popular characters as evergreen releases. It'd be nice to see new classic versions of characters like Spider-Man, Hulk, Daredevil, the Punisher, Doc Ock and Doctor Doom without having to wait for an expensive two-pack or multi-pack release, especially for new customers just starting their "Marvel Legends" collections.
