So in thinking more about the reveal that X-Factor Jean Grey is not just a Target Exclusive, but part of a series of Target Exclusive Retro X-Men figures this year..
Is it possible that Rachel Phoenix and Deathbird could also be part of that Target Exclusive Retro X-Men series?
People here will flip their lids if that's the case, and I hope it isn't... but Hasbro gonna Hasbro man.
Ryan said "it was kind of a theme this year" for Target - first Professor X, then Jean and "let us know who else you think you'll see (horribly paraphrasing).
I'm betting Retro Mystique is next.
I feel ROM is gonna be THE figure of the year for me. I just never thought they’d get it together to make it. And after Crystarr and him, I’m actually praying for some Micronauts two-packs.
I thought Jean looked great till I saw the boots and went, huh? Was it like that in the comic?
But then I got really excited, cause I realised I can customise her in not one, but two characters that I doubt will ever see release.
The long hair head with that body can become…Shamrock! But of airbrushing and a shamrock leaf print and voila!
The second head and body with the cowl look, the gloves from classic Marvel Girl, the boots from Captain Marvel II and a head fin, can become the second Red Guardian, Tanya Belinskaya, which will get me a step closer to complete my classic 70’s Defenders (still waiting on Gargoyle and Devil-Slayer), so I know I’m absolutely getting 3 Jeans from X-Factor.
How did that happen?
Couldn't feel more different about Dwight and Ryan (and Dan). They come across as genuine to me, even when they're having to ham it up a bit to sell the newest thing, and I appreciate that these streams aren't all that polished (even though they're not technically live). The comic thing isn't all that exciting, but I'm not going to get mad about a new gimmick being added to a hobby based on gimmicks. It's good that these will be in retail stores, and if this is what it takes for Wal-Mart to get on board then so be it.
It was fun that they addressed Dwight's Banshee comment from way back - that's kind of a wild thing for anyone to even remember, a shows some continuity over the years.
I'm a smidge disappointed at Rom's overall size. But just a smidge.
I am looking forward to seeing how this new Spiderman scales with RYV Spiderman. There's not many people talking about it, but I love the inclusion of "grip" hands. Out of all the things a Spiderman does, web-swinging is always my favorite pose for him, so those hands on my Mafex are almost always being used. Is this the first Hasbro Spiderman with grip hands ever? I really don't need the figure as RYV is great but I do like his proportions.
They did fix Deadpool's knee pad paint app after it was revealed, and Cable's trunks were also altered in time for release. So maybe there is hope for Jean's boots?
That Ultimate Iron Man is very unexpected and will finally be replacing the Select version that's been on my shelf for like 15 years.
I think the dumbbell tease is for She-Hulk, hopefully in her F4 uniform.
Yup, and this is the outfit we'll get :p
Did they say if these are going to be more fan channel exclusives or if they're mass retail? Because if the latter then I get the necessity of including better known characters like Iron Man and Miles since the Targets and Walmarts of the world probably would be wary of an assortment that's Wolverine and then a bunch of comparative deep cuts. It seems to fit the gradual shift we've been seeing of the front facing mainstream retailers getting stuff that's largely MCU or headlined by well known characters and then the stuff populated mostly by lesser known fan favorites being fan channel exclusives.
Mainline - Target, Wal-mart...
Thanks, Beamish. Yeah, makes sense then. If this is a new initiative and they're trying to sell it to retailers, a Wolverine variant and then the next most recognizable characters being Warlock and Banshee wasn't gonna fly.
Cool idea on the comics, they'd be quite novel if they were readable with a QR code or something, as it is it just seems....?
Banshee, I've been waiting 18 years and here we are, very happy. Aside from a new Byrne Cyclops and a new classic Marvel Girl (almost a dead cert for a certain two pack later this year), I'm happy with this team (an easier to get classic Emma and Shaw, classic Kitty, more Imperial Guard, complete the Starjammers, Moses Magnum, Proteus, Classic Sauron.. I'm not far off everything I want! And I honestly don't see much of that happening, aside from the Jammers). Glad there's no Siryn shenanigans going on and he can actually be displayed using his power which is a huge relief, just needs his pipe.
ROM, perfection. Hang it in the Louvre, much like Count Nefaria and before him, Exiles-ish Morph, a personal Grail fulfilled.
As a poster said before the reveal, a blank body was too powerful for Hasbro to resist for poor Warlock! Looks cool, but it might end up in the "wait and see pile". Nice the Gauntlet is removeable, a thoughtful thing to do.
Ultimates was -the- thing growing up, I loved it and it's a superb figure but.. it's not quite doing it for me. An alternate Tony head might've sealed the deal, it's something I'd have been raving about 5 years ago but I think with a 95% thinned down collection, and generally with everything that happened with that universe it's a £7.50 special deal or bust.
Miles I have no special connection too, same as Daken but they seem alright for those interested. Jean - those boots!! How?? Happy for those X Factor fans but not my bag anymore, just a dinosaurs personal opinion but I feel some of the articulation cuts are starting to veer toward being a bit unsightly as they used to be, its a tightrope I appreciate. Ultimate Ultimate Ultimate we assure you Ultimate McFarl Spider Man I'm actually sold on, I sold my retro collection Spidey in my purge and I've been after a generic one since buying stuff again, the unmasked head and ungloved hands sell it for me - price dependent of course. Not quite classic but, good enough. No dis to Hasbro, maybe I'm getting old, but I found the "look at all this amazing articulation! ooo rotating head/neck articulation!" somewhat funny given that my Spider Man 2 spidey could do something similar 20 odd years ago.. I'm glad to see that return however!
Dumbbells... first thought was a classic Colossus Retro card release with his original belt buckle this time, but it has to be Strong Guy right, almost certainly remember him on a 90s poster or trading card with those weights?
Classic issues figures off the top of my head I'd love, please please please Exiles 1 with Mimic or Nocturne, X Men 127 with Proteus, X Men 50 with a classic Polaris, Avengers 9 with a first appearance Wonder Man, Avengers 19 with Swordsman, Avengers 59 with Yellowjacket, Avengers 176 with Korvac, Avengers 185 with a classic Quicksilver, Daredevil 181 with a classic Daredevil.. if I can get ROM quality classics from this I'd be quite happy
Really hoping for some new Serpent Society members soon. It seems like it's been a hot minute since we got a new member.
ME TOO. The leak lists have a ton of stuff I'm excited for, and I'm generally pretty happy with the number of new characters they've put out in the last year. But every stream that comes and goes without more Serpent Society is disappointing.
The Maximum Spidey is pretty tempting. Very happy to get Banshee for the GS X-Men team.
Kind of frustrated that they started with the later X-Factor Cyclops first and now are pivoting to Issue #1 looks, as I have to decide if I want to get the Nemesis wave Cyke now. Having said that, I kind of prefer the Issue #1 looks.
The idea of a maybe a half-dozen Target X-Men figures is great if it helps complete some teams/eras.
My suspicion is that the BAF waves will become less common - or move to Fan Channel - and the mini-comic will become the defacto option for the mainline releases. The success of the retro cards - which I think work better on shelves than the old Legends box -has to have gotten retail thinking this is the way to go, and focusing on X-Men and heavy hitters makes sense given the X-Men 97 series.

I'm betting Retro Mystique is next.
You may be right... but that is for sure the most disappointing choice I can imagine. I absolutely don't need a retro Mystique. The Walgreen's exclusive Mystique was great and I have no issues with it and I don't need them revisiting that look again already. And they hit it again in the Animated Series Box release - albeit with that cel shading... I can think of 50 X-Men characters I would like to see on that retro card at least before another Mystique.
QR codes to make the comics readable is a cool idea and would redeem the concept a bit for me - fun way to hark back to the actual readable comics of Legends prehistory. As it stands though, those bits are hitting the fodder drawer fast.
I’ll now be transferring all my dashed Adam hopes onto the rumoured Magus - if they bust him out in the classic look (and why wouldn’t they - they did his modern look only recently), that’s a load of unique parts in the bank that Adam could then reuse.
It would make a lot more sense if the back of the mini comic had a QR code that downloaded a free copy of the comics.
If they did a spinner Build a Rack I might enjoy having a dozen or so of these comics.
